Open June 2018
We have just built a luxury lodge with irori and log stove.
Enjoy a beautiful architectural space decorated with a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian style. Take in views from the balcony, or curl up on the sofa in front of the log stove. The Lodge is decorated with local artisans work. The bedding is organic cotton sourced from Muji. Soak in the ambience of 430 years at our Buddhist temple.
Surrounded by stunning scenery you can explore Mt Aso area and Takachiho.

The space
The guest quarters are in a separate building with table-tennis table and lounge area for the guests exclusive use.

Smoking is only allowed outside.

Private Western-style toilet, bathroom with shower and hot running water. Washing machine. Kitchen with refrigerator, gas hob, microwave, rice cooker, toaster oven and kettle. Please feel free to prepare your own food.

Breathtaking scenery, mountains, forests, terraced rice paddis. Spectacular gorge with rowing boats, famous Shinto shrines and yokagura dancing. Great local food and shochu!

Travel by bus from Fukuoka, Kumamoto or Nobeoka.

Having your own transport is the best, but if I have time I can take you places.
We can sometimes do the initial pick-up from the bus station, please check when you book. We also often give our guests rides to the famous sights.

This is a family-run temple and I live with my in-laws. Guests are expected to be respectful of our family and our facilities. Also, as we are a public place with temple visitors on a daily basis, we like our staying guests to be properly dressed. (Not too much flesh showing, thank you!)

Please note that this is, as I state above, a family-run temple with visitors on a daily basis. This is a fully working temple, guests have the exclusive use of the large room, kitchen, toilet and bath....all located in their own separate building. However, one of the single room is accessed through our communal temple kitchen. Don't be surprised if someone is doing some washing up or preparing some vegetables!

We do NOT offer Zen-style retreats!

This is a Pure Land temple, run by our family for 17 generations. There is hustle and bustle and lots to observe and to enjoy.

Please note: if you want exclusive use of the Lodge, please check out our exclusive booking option on Airbnb.

Where you’ll be

Takachiho-chō, Miyazaki-ken, Japan

Breathtaking scenery, mountains, forests, terraced rice paddis. Spectacular gorge with rowing boats, famous Shinto shrines and yokagura dancing. Great local food and shochu!
Please note....I live in the middle of paddi fields. It will take you 40 minutes to walk to the nearest shop. Please do any necessary shopping in Takachiho town centre before heading to the temple. I drive in and out of the town centre several times a day so, when possible, we will give you a ride.

I'm a British woman who has lived here in Takachiho, Japan for 27 years. I am a Pure Land Buddhist priest and I am married to the 17th generation head priest of Shonenji Temple. Together with my in-laws we run our busy temple, teach in the community and look after our three children. We love hosting, talking, cooking, eating, drinking and socialising. We are not vegetarian and we enjoy drinking alcohol. We have hosted many guests from all over the world over the years but 2015 marks our debut with Airbnb. We are a Pure Land Buddhist temple so we do not offer zazen but we do encourage our guests to take part in our chanting services.

During your stay

We love to show our guests our work here at the temple. Enjoy a personal guided tour of the temple with explanations of the Jodo-Shinshu traditions.

And I reiterate, this is a working temple with hustle and bustle. We are active priests with an active congregation. Though it's totally quiet most of the time we have deliveries of rice and vegetables, temple services, our own family. Please be respectful of our working temple.
