Firstly, Ka was an awesome host. Her home came complete with everything from a grill, to clean towels and sheets, brochures and books of maps and lounge chairs and a beach umbrella. She also really helped us negotiate with the airlines so that we got our luggage in a reasonable time and delivered to her home(really helpful since we traveled with a 4 month old baby). She was always reachable by phone, or email !
Secondly, her home was even MORE beautiful than advertised. There was first a beautiful garden with a very healthy lemon tree and a trellis from which grapes blossommed, anda grill which we made much use of. The architecture of the home is very rustic and romantic, a beautiful stone structure. The furniture is just as beautiful and she obviously has a great taste in furniture.
Thirdly, the location is ideal for people who want to be close to all that the south of france has to offer, but do NOT enjoy the idea of being surrounded by throngs of tourists. The town is very close to Nice, Grasse, and maybe an hour's drive from Cannes, and also very accessible by train to Monaco. This proximity makes day trips extremely easy, but then also allows you to return home to a very very cosy and quiet environment. One day my family and I decided to call it an early day, and spent the afternoon and evening grilling and sharing a family meal.
If traveling in the summer, I will say you need to be prepared to deal with the region's mosquitoes (we had to by a lot of spray and candles), and also be prepared IF there happens to be a heat wave (as in my case) during the summer since there is no A/C in the home, and neither is there A/C on much of public transportation and local places.
Ka and her husband were very kind and flexible in accomodating us (with our dog) since we ended up arriving very late. The house was as described, clean and well designed in the quiet village of Maganosc about 10 minutes drive from Grasse center. The little garden was very pretty and provided a nice option for sitting outside for meals. The house if tastefully done and perfect size for our family of 2 plus 2 teenagers. The bedrooms were comfortable, if hot in the middle of summer (some fans would have been a much appreciated addition). The master bedroom is on the top floor and on one side overlooked by the neighbours who could literally throw something onto the bed if they wanted to, but with the curtains shut and the shutters closed it didn't bother us. The view from the other window in the master bed is wonderful with the church tower in the near distance and much of Grasse spreading out beyond. One needs a car to get to Grasse and parking is in the little square about 100 meters from the house. All communication with Ka was quick and easy and uncomplicated. It was perfect for us to explore Grasse and visit with my mother who lives 14 minutes away by car! We would love to come back.
It was simply lovely. Quiet. Situated off a narrow one-car/one-lane street. We were greeted regularly by a friendly, yellow cat and by the bells of the nearby church. The kitchen was spacious and well equipped; a boulangerie and produce store were within walking distance. For those with grown-but-still-nutty kids who participate in the Ironman at Nice, there were 3 advantages: 1) the cottage was located very close to a turn-around on the biking segment and 2) the peacefulness of the garden was a perfect antidote to the hubbub of Nice and 3) We were able to easily extend our stay for a day. Our family loved it.
About the Host, Ka
We are an "old" traveller couple: bagpacking all around the world.... and we found the best place to live: the côte d'azur!
We love the very special light here, specially in wintertime, the nature in all its variety, the climate which is so healthy and the quality of the air (reason why Queen Victoria used to come to Grasse)....
Our house is a very "customized" place which will make you feel like in a private home and not just anywhere.
We love to meet people from all over the world to exchange. It's a continous pleasure of discovering cultures.
