Apple House is a quiet retreat where you can completely unwind. With beautiful changing views to the wildlife garden and pond, the kitchen garden and the hills beyond.
Standing in the gardens of Hylands, a fine Arts and Crafts House, to the West of Kendal. It is decorated using quality local materials and skills of local crafts people.
It is 12 minutes walk to Kendal town center's many independent shops, cafes and restaurants and 5 minutes walk to our local pub 'The Rifleman's Arms'
The space
You enter Hylands and the Apple House up a wooded driveway bordered with large sculptures. Apple House is close to but detached from Hylands.
The bedroom and en-suite are the first spaces you will see as you enter, the living area is upstairs. Oak furniture, soft 'Piglet in bed' linen bedding and a heated blanket in the winter, give this space simple luxury. The en-suite shower room is warm, light and fresh.
On climbing the stairs an enchanting bohemian space awaits you. The sitting, dining room and kitchen all sit under a vaulted ceiling. Moroccan lighting sets the mood, mixed with a simple open shelved oak kitchen, made from wood we have felled and seasoned. A wood burning stove and large corner sofa, Ercol table and chairs, SMEG red fridge and mini range make a comfortable, warm, imaginative space. There are beautiful views across the kitchen garden, woodland, the wildlife pond, and to Benson Knot and the Howgill fells beyond.
Outside you have your own gravelled terrace with table and chairs, which catches the sun during the day with views over the south gardens. There is an acre of shared meadow and woods to the rear where you can have a rustic BBQ and walk your dogs. The sunny sitting area, next to the pond is also a lovely place for an evening drink before the sun goes down.
There is a shelf in the woodshed where surplus eggs and vegetables are placed, as available, for you to help yourself to. The wood there is also for your use.
We have a resident Gruffalo here too, you’ll have to try and find him.
As a former architect and sculptor we hope our blended skills bring to the Apple House a thoughtfulness in the details to help you have a really magical stay.
Guest access
The gravel terrace immediately to the South of the Apple House is for your exclusive use. You turn left out of the entrance to get to this space.
Also shared is our wildlife pond, do sit around it, it gets the best of the evening sunshine, but do take care not to get too close to the water! We built the pond on a former grass tennis court in 2023.
The meadow and wood to the back of the house are shared with us and other guests and can be used for quiet sitting or a rustic BBQ or camp fire.

We also have at Hylands, Atelier, La'al Yam and Tethera Nook holiday lets. All are on Airbnb.
The gardens are open for charity as part of the Nation Garden Scheme (NGS) on two days each year. We have other gardening groups visit a few times a year.
From time to time to time we run gardening and painting workshops. We would let you know (invite you to join in) if an event was planned during your stay.
