House rules
This place isn’t suitable for infants (0–2 yrs) and the host doesn’t allow smoking.
Built for $500.00 dollars "back-in-the-day," the Earlehurst Cottage was inhabited by The Carters, a humble, cute old country couple. Here, they raised two daughters. Today, the house is tastefully appointed where expected - & comfortable to modern standards - yet, it has been left as charming & cozy as it had always been: with elements of the original decor, windows, plaster walls, etc., being preserved. The Earlehurst Cottage is the essence of a 1930s craftsman-style, well-appointed home.

The space
Nestled in the Alleghany Highlands of the Sweet Springs Valley of Virginia, Beaverdam Falls is an historic series of waterfalls at the headwaters of Dunlap Creek and is the terminus for the Sweet Springs. Surrounded by the verdant George Washington National Forest, our portion at the Upper Falls, displays a constant waterfall of around 40-feet in height and numerous beautiful cascades peppered throughout our creek. The 60-acre private tract of unparalleled Virginia countryside will simply astonish your expectations. As the source of the Falls, Sweet Springs Creek, serves as a long, unique trout stream of calcified rock, chalybeate water, and ancient beaver dams. Beaverdam Falls is a rare place for the lack of stone and the centuries of beavers who have left their trace in & on our creek—and swamp, the Stick Marsh, which has an active beaver dam. Be careful! They do bite!

Guest access
The house, and full 60-acres, but please keep your distance when you stumble upon a campsite.

Other things to note
Important: When you book with us, you are charged by Airbnb for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 5.3% Occupancy Tax; unfortunately, there is an additional 5 % Occupancy Tax required to be paid by all guests by order of the county in which we reside, Alleghany County, and for which Airbnb can’t collect for us (or permit us to collect electronically) at the time of booking. Airbnb files taxes only at the state level and will not permit us yet to collect locally through their software, as many localities have just now started charging these taxes. This tax is paid in person for each booking. Please feel free to contact Airbnb or the Alleghany County, VA Tax collector if you have questions, or just wish to reassure yourself that the additional tax is not a scam.

That being said, our guests leave cash or check on arrival with Beau after arrival when it’s convenient. He remits this tax on behalf of Beaverdam Falls to the local county Treasury monthly.

Additional Notes:

We are very easy going, but feel free to ask should you have any concerns. Check-in is contactless but we’re usually on the property doing daily maintenance or turning over campsites, and touring guests around; often, we’re just 20-minutes away.

Notes: “Pool” in the listing signifies, the various swimming pools and basins below the Falls to which you are permitted swimming access. You have full access to hike and explore the private 60-acre tract. The house is located at the entrance to the property, and it’s private and secluded from the other campsites. The yard in the back is fenced, and dogs and cats are welcome. There is no trout fishing without a $125/per trip fee. Please check yourself for ticks, and watch your dogs as snakes and wildlife are often tempting for them! Leashed only, and they can be left in the back yard. Additionally, there is no service here, since we are surrounded by national Forests. The WiFi is HughesNet, and there is a landline phone connection. Food Lion and Walmart are less than 15 minutes away, as is cell service. There is a 55” tv, complete with a DVD player and an Apple TV. There is Dish Network TV provided as well. BUT... We want you to unplug and enjoy nature, yet even with the slower WiFi you are able to watch Netflix on most occasions.

The house is generously equipped: the kitchen is fully equipped, and we provide clean linens and towels, as well as toilet paper, laundry detergent, and paper towels.

We are here should you need anything during your stay. Thank you for your interest and we hope to welcome you.

Location

Covington, Virginia, United States

Located just off SR-311, you are located in the middle of “nowhere.” Really...but that’s the point! No worrries though the supermarket and most essentials are less than 15 minutes away in Lewisburg/Union and White Sulphur Springs WV, and Covington, VA while the outskirts of Roanoke, VA are just 45 minutes away.

Having worked in many areas, I have much of my work experience & time in the service industry: managing at the restaurant level, and in events, & even at wineries as well. Although I love the service industry, my passion has always been teaching. But, I love working in nature, managing natural land, & restoring cars in my spare time. Most recently, I taught French in public schools, managed online learning programs in Richmond Public Schools, & I have my BA in French & Theatre, & my MA in French Literature from UVA. Born & raised in Florida, Melbourne/Ocala are both my home towns, but the Virginia’s have my heart! After finishing my MA & teaching French as an instructor at UVA, I ventured into ecotourism, camping & property/land management for my family properties. Currently, I operate an ecotourism business at our ranch & nature preserve, Beaverdam Falls in Alleghany County, Virginia. We operate glampsites through Tentrr, Airbnb rentals, among other things, & manage other lands & homes in WV and FL. I’m fortunate to do what I love, & to be in the great outdoors. We do not discriminate, & welcome ALL!

During your stay
Guests have complete enjoyment of the interior & porch of the house. They have additional access & recreation rights to visit the Falls Viewing area, swim in the creek or hike in the field. The environs of the house, mostly the rear and the adjacent barns & sheds are used by the host for property maintenance & for other camping sites on the property, so host is often working around the house. Host is usually on the property in separate lodgings and generally working on the property, but is not always present.
