Lives in Portal, Arizona
Mike and I moved to Portal upon our retirement after 35 years in the nature center and zoo professions. Over the years we have worked directly with a variety of native and exotic animals. Earlier in his career, Mike was a sheriff’s deputy in Iowa then became an environmental educator when we moved to Louisiana. Being in environmental education Mike’s career involved working at a couple of nature centers and one zoo developing educational programs and special events. I always wanted to work in a zoo so my career has provided me experiences at three different zoos over the years. Some of my favorite animals to care for have been big cats which included lions, tigers and leopards. Although we are originally from Iowa we have worked in Louisiana and Texas as well. Because the Portal area has such diverse flora and fauna it was definitely a standout location for retirement.
We have visited the Portal area a number of times and fell in love with the abundance of wildlife in the Chiricahua Mountains and surrounding area. It was an easy decision for us to relocate here and share our passion for wildlife with our guests.
We enjoy traveling, hiking, camping and taking drives to observe wildlife. Mike’s favorites are the reptiles and amphibians. I enjoy all the wildlife but I’m partial to the mammals.
