Just steps from the beach, this secluded property is nestled in a jungle of live oak trees on a quiet lot east of Center Street. The space
“Made in the Shade” is a cozy, authentic Folly Beach bungalow that’s perfect for adventurous families on a budget or groups of friends looking for a laid-back getaway. The home is intended for families and relaxed groups, not events or large gatherings. With three bedrooms and two baths, it is not appropriate for parties, bachelorettes, or large groups of any kind. Guests love the quiet, private setting, and you’ll still be just about 500 feet from the beach and 1.2 miles from the restaurants and shops of Center Street, which is a 10-minute bike ride or a 30-minute walk.

The property consists of two separate apartments that share a large backyard, an outdoor deck, a “spa shack” with an outdoor clawfoot soaking tub and outdoor shower, a large 500 gallon hot tub, and a screened porch on each side. The apartments do not connect internally and require walking a few steps outside to move between them.

The main, larger side includes a kitchen with granite countertops and stainless appliances, a comfortable living area with 60” 4K Smart TV (ready for your streaming subscriptions—no cable), a master bedroom with a King mattress, a bonus efficiency room with a queen bed, and a sleeper sofa in the sunroom. These sleeper sofas are best suited for children.

The smaller side, affectionately called “Lil Shady,” is perfect for teenage kids or friends who want a little privacy or keep a different schedule—probably not your parents. It includes a queen pull-out sofa, a queen bed, a 44” Smart TV, and window AC plus space heaters (there is no central HVAC in this part of the home). This efficiency apartment is fully included in the rental, but please note that it does have some visible wear and tear. Between both spaces, guests will enjoy one king bed, two queen beds, and two sleeper sofas, along with a fully stocked kitchen that includes cookware, pots, pans, knives, basic cooking staples, and condiments.

Please note that this is an older, circa-1940 beach bungalow with authentic charm as well as expected wear and tear. It is not a luxury accommodation and not the right fit for guests with delicate sensibilities or those expecting a flawless, brand-new home: there are plenty of those on Folly. We want every guest to enjoy their stay, and setting clear expectations helps ensure positive experiences . That said, we have dozens of return guests every year and generally receive very positive feedback and guest reviews- but there's always that 'one' expecting the Ritz! :)

Because we receive many common questions: beach access is extremely close—just two houses over, across two skinny blocks, to a beautiful public stretch of sand about 500 feet away. We provide bath towels and bed linens, but guests must bring their own beach towels, beach blankets, tapestries, chairs, and anything intended for beach use. Please do not take any household linens, blankets, or towels to the beach. Cooking is easy here; the home offers a full kitchen with a range and stainless appliances. For coffee lovers, there is both a standard Mr. Coffee drip pot and a large French press. Regarding pricing and fees—yes, we know they are high, and we feel it too. We do not receive any of the added platform fees and actually absorb a large portion of our housekeeping costs because our cleaners are excellent. Rates and minimum stays vary seasonally and can be up to three times higher during popular summer seasons and weekends. Managing this 1940s cottage requires significant year-round expenses, including coastal insurance, flood insurance, property taxes, Charleston County accommodations tax, Folly Beach accommodations tax, an STR license, a business license, utilities, groundskeeping, supplies, hot tub maintenance + chemicals and more. We personally manage every booking simply to break even.

Please review Airbnb’s cancellation policies carefully, as we do not provide refunds for weather, hurricanes unless there is a mandatory evacuation, travel delays, or other emergency circumstances. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance through Airbnb or any trusted third-party provider. For early check-in, the answer is almost always no; please do not arrive early or show up to watch us clean. For guests wondering about the string lights, the “party lights” switch is located by the desk in the living room—enjoy them responsibly.
