Our 1-bedroom apartment can help you feel at home while visiting Washington, DC! With a full-kitchen and a location directly across the street from the Eastern Market Metro, consider yourself in the heart of Capitol Hill!

The Space

*Price already includes 14.5% DC Lodging Tax. The pre-tax price is $179/night.*

We have a 600-sq-foot, 1-br furnished, English basement apartment on Capitol Hill (Eastern Market) in Washington, DC. It has its own ingress (front door) and egress (back door) and is located beneath our Capitol Hill rowhome. We're a family of five: two adults and our three recently-adopted foster children, ages 4, 5, and 7. As we live above the apartment, you will hear us -- and we will likely hear you. It is city-living! (Our story was highlighted in Aug. 2012 in The Washington Post.)

We're situated on a residential street that mixes city-life with residential-life. We're less than 1 block from the Eastern Market Metro (you can see it from the front door!), and 1-4 blocks from numerous restaurants, bars, coffeeshops, etc. (on Pennsylvania Ave., SE as well as 8th Street SE, aka "Barracks Row"). We're 7 blocks from the US Capitol and the Library of Congress; about 6 blocks from the Washington Navy Yard (ask about the 10% Active Duty / Retired Military discount we offer); about 12 blocks from Nationals Stadium; and about 9 blocks from the Folger Shakespeare Library. The National Mall (Smithsonian Museums) is easily accessible: it's either 4 Metro stops away (exiting at Smithsonian Station), or hopping on any 30s bus (our favorite).

This apartment has a Walk Score® of 91/100, Walkers' Paradise. See Airbnb pictures of Capitol Hill here: https://www.airbnb.com/locations/washington-dc/capitol-hill

Capitol Hill really only has one hotel in this area: Capitol Hill Hotel. Check its prices to determine whether our apartment would be a good deal for you. (Interestingly, if you visit the website of that hotel, one of the pictures that it prominently displays on its website is a string of about 6 homes on our block -- the pink one on the far left is ours!)

Parking would be on-street parking but generally we're always able to find a spot on our block. If you request it, we can provide you a visitor's parking pass that will allow you to park without fear of being ticketed/towed. Our neighborhood in particular has quite restrictive parking restrictions unless you live here or have the aforementioned visitor's parking pass.

Additional perks that you'll find:
*fully-stocked kitchen -- cut your dining-out costs by cooking at home!
*coffee maker, coffee grinder, and French press; we just added a new Keurig K-cup coffee maker!
*iron and ironing board
*cable television (29") with DVD player, including Roku and Hulu to watch streaming movies from Netflix
*wireless Internet
*some snacks provided
*some toiletries provided in case you forget yours!
*speaker set (with radio) for your iPhone
*iPhone, iPad and phone charging station

Our house (not this apartment) generates 68% of the house's energy through the 14 solar panels on our roof (one of the first solar installations on Capitol Hill!). The apartment has CFLs, a dual-flush toilet, Pella windows, and a Nest Learning Thermostat. Additionally, the electricity is sourced from local wind farms through Clean Currents. We're in the process of slowly phasing out our regular cleaning supplies for more environmentally-friendly products. Additionally, as DC can be hot and sticky and swampy in the summer, we have a mosquito service that comes every two weeks to spray for mosquitoes in our front yard and our back yard. We have the "natural" treatment which consists of a garlic-based product that is safe for animals, kids, and plants.

For grocery stores, there is a 1) Yes Organic Market 2 blocks away; 2) Harris Teeter 7 blocks away; and 3) Safeway 10 blocks away. CVS, Starbucks, and Dunkin' Donuts are all within a 2-minute walk.

The apartment can conceivably sleep 6 people (but it's probably best for 4 or fewer): 2 on the full/double bed in the bedroom; 2 on the full/double pull-out sofa in the living room; and 2 on the queen blow-up air mattress (which would be set up in the living room). We also have a crib and a pack-and-play available if requested.

Pets are allowed; the cleaning fee doubles, however. No smoking or incense, please.

When you make your reservation, I'll provide you online access to our detailed, 31-page "Tips & Tricks" book. You'll also have a hardcopy of this available upon check-in. We provide not only information about your reservation (e.g., checking in, checking out, using the Internet, streaming movies from Netflix, etc.), but also local attractions, restaurants, and cool, interesting local things to do. (Quite a few things tourists would never stumble upon!)

For each person over 5 years old in your party we'll provide you a Metro SmarTrip card with a few bucks on it. This will a) save you the time of having to purchase paper farecards; and b) save you the $1/trip paper farecard surcharge. (If you're arriving by plane at Reagan Airport and you expect to take the Metro to our apartment, I can mail the Metro cards to you in advance if that is helpful. I can also do this if you're arriving by train at Union Station.)

Bonus #1: You'll have unlimited 29-minute bike rides on the Capital Bikeshare bike-sharing program (there's a station directly across the street). We'll even throw in $5 free if you accidentally go above the 29-minute rides (and we get charged). (Tip: Plot your route so that you check-in your bike before 29 minutes... and then check-out the same bike and start again!)

Bonus #2: If you happen to be in the apartment on a Saturday or a Sunday, enjoy home delivery of The Washington Post.

Bonus #3: If you stay 6 nights or longer, we'll give you the option of allowing our cleaning lady to do a cleaning session on the apartment, if you choose, free of charge for you.

Guest Access

You will have access to everything in the fully-furnished apartment beneath our house. You'll also have access to our front yard.

Interaction with Guests

One week prior to your arrival, I'll send you a detailed email with check-in instructions. On your day of arrival, I'll send you a text with reminder information. The day after check-in, I'll follow up to make sure everything's ok!

The Neighborhood

Eastern Market is a part of Capitol Hill that is a great mix of residential and great restaurants and bars. It's walker-friendly and within a 10-minute walk, there are nearly 20 restaurants available!

Getting around

The apartment is directly across the street from the Eastern Market Metro. Many guests who have cars simply leave their cars parked for their stay!

  • Our stay in Kelly's basement apartment was absolutely perfect for our short weekend excursion to DC. The location was fantastic and we were able to walk around and sight see, and the metro passes were a huge help as well! We loved the informational booklet provided too. Our family of 6 fit snugly, we cozied up and watched a movie at night and spent the day in the city. Kelly was super gracious and very responsive to questions we had. We would definitely go this route over a hotel any time!

  • Hello Airbnb Community;
This location is phenomenal, it can get a bit tricky when it gets dark but just use common sense. Very close to the capital, Metro, Navy yard, marine barracks and a lot of great restaurants.
I would suggest taking your significant other down to the waterfront for a stroll, there is a lot of nice development happening and good restaurants.
I would definitely stay here again. Use (website hidden) if you need to get to the airport before the Metro is running, use promo code q9gbl and get a nice discount on your first ride when you sign up.
Kelly is extremely accommodating, we tried very hard to be good guests and he was helpful from start to finish.
    Best of luck.

  • We very much enjoyed our stay in D.C. Kelly was very accommodating to our needs and tried his best to get us an earlier check in. There were a total of five of us, and we slept very comfortably, even though the double airbed didn't work. The airbed was broken without them knowing, but I let them know, and refunded me $35 for it. I wasn't expecting it at all, but very much appreciated it!!! They also provided a 31 page DC tour guide and what is near their apt, which was very helpful for us. This place is very very close to the subway, maybe a minute away. It was easy access to other locations. I very much recommend this place for others traveling in DC, and it was in the center of the city. The only downer was that there were a few homeless people outside the subway location, so it was a little sketchy. All the restaurants were great in that area, seemed like many people traveled to just eat there.

  • When I started planning our trip to DC, I knew we didn't want to stay in a hotel. I traveled with myself and my two daughters aged 9 and 11. When I stumbled upon this apartment I snatched it up for our Fall Trip. Unfortunately- our trip was at the same time as the government shutdown in October, and I had to reschedule our trip last-minute for the spring. Kelly was amazingly generous and helpful as we rescheduled not once, but twice due to a white house tour scheduled a day too early. When we arrived the apartment was spotless and perfect for what we needed. There is a CVS down the street and a Harris Teeter at the next metro stop- very easy and convenient- though it took more planning than loading up the car! We made so many great memories at that place and had such an excellent trip- by the end the girls were begging to stay another week. Kelly was an excellent host- very communicative and was five steps ahead of me- answering my questions before they'd even popped into my head. In short- I very highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great, central location in DC. You won't regret it!! :)

  • Great location and amazing & attentive hosts. Recommended for anyone visiting DC and wants to be near the action. All of the privacy with the comforts of home.

  • We had such a wonderful time in DC and loved calling this place home that we stayed on an extra night. I can't imagine staying any place else. The apartment is clean, convenient to everything, and Kelly and Jack could not have been any nicer. I can't say enough good things about the apartment and the hosts!!!

  • Kelly was a FABULOUS host! The apartment was perfect for our trip to Washington DC (2 adults and a six year old)! It was so much cleaner than a hotel room that we were immediately at ease with choosing to stay there. Like Kelly says in his post, you hear the little feet overhead, but I'm sure they heard us, too, so it's not a problem - just something to be aware of when you book. We had no problems and Kelly was totally on top of everything. He responded quickly whenever I text with a question and had great suggestions. He even went out of his way to make our stay a little better when we made a mistake on our end! The luxury of not having to buy a Metro Card because he provided them for us was awesome ~ I really just can't say enough positive things about renting this apartment or renting from Kelly & Jack. Two big thumbs up on this renter and rental!!

  • Good location and spacious.

  • I'm amazed with how great Kelly was. The apartment was beautiful and our hosts were more than willing to provide help and amenities. The apartment has a binder that Kelly typed up that includes answers to every possible question that an out-of-towner can have. We watched Netflix and drank the free Keurig coffee, and didn't once hear a peep from the family upstairs.

The next time I'm in D.C. I'll be staying with Kelly. Thank you for hosting us!

  • We had a great stay at Eastern Market. As soon as we entered the door, the place was spotless clean, and warm. The hosts Kelly and Jack did a great job of supplying everything you can think of. We felt like we were at our own home.

We love the location. It is a really lovely neighborhood. The people are very nice. The metro is steps away. There are so many good restaurants in walking distance. We found a parking spot right in front of the house the night we arrived. This was the most convenient DC experience we had. We are already planning our next stay here.

Hi everyone, My name is Kelly and I live in Washington, DC, with my husband and our three recently-adopted children. We live across the street from the Eastern Market Metro Station and rent out our downstairs apartment. We've been renting our DC apartment (underneath our house) since March 2012; we've begun renting our WV cabins since Jan. 2013. For tourists to DC, we have -- I have to admit! -- a pretty superb location in that you can be on the National Mall (the Smithsonian Museums) in less than 20 minutes. Historic Eastern Market is just a few blocks away. My husband works for the federal government, and I work for a global consulting firm supporting the federal government on sustainability issues. We enjoy bbq'ing outside when the weather is nice, going to the park with the kids, and simply being parents.
