Stay on the waterfront, South Bruny Island, in bohemian five star luxury. Enjoy endless panoramic ocean views. Mat and Caroline have converted the art studio into a spacious private guest house. New and sparkling; it offers total stylish comfort. Unlimited WIFI and Netflix are a bonus. Caroline's original painting marks cover the walls, now displaying her work. Antique rugs adorn the floors. Stroll a few metres across the garden to the water. Swim or kayak, or walk to the nearby beach and pub.

The space
The house is stylish, extremely comfortable and very close to the water, with large north west facing decks that get some of Tasmania's best ocean views and sunsets. Every part of the house has beautiful views. The stacking glass doors open up to the full width of the living room, so you don't even need to move to capture the full view and sea breeze. You can also step out and relax on the wide deck, and enjoy the comfortable outdoor sofa and armchairs.

The living area, with its amazing vistas, is very spacious. It is set up with a stylish and comfortable black leather sofa, two armchairs, bright rugs, a small library, a sound system and CDs, a TV and lots of colourful art made right there in the studio space. To keep you warm, there is a (romantic) Scandinavian wood heater, as well as electric heating. There are also floor to ceiling blinds on every window, operated with a remote control. And if you're feeling a bit warm, usually the sea breeze keeps you wonderfully cool. However just in case, there are also ceiling fans (living area and bedroom) as well as a portable air conditioner.

There is a full kitchen, slightly off set from the main living space, also with gorgeous views. It has a gas cooktop and an electric oven; beautiful dinner ware from Portugal; European appliances, including a Smeg coffee machine and Scanpan stainless steel cookware. High quality ground coffee, sugar, a selection of black and herbal teas and milk, as well as a small range of condiments are provided. The benches are granite and there is a large wooden table that was once the art studio work bench. There is also an electric barbeque for outdoor cooking, and of course, a fridge. Alternatively, you can order in pizza from the local pub, or if you're feeling energetic, walk there along the Dray Track for dinner.

The bedroom is a separate room that has folding doors to close it off from the living area; although the doors usually stay open as the view is just so fabulous. There is a brand new Tasmanian Oak bed with a plush mattress and pure linen bedding, a new feather quilt (ethically sourced), Japanese antique side tables and again, lots of artwork. Staying true to the origins of the space, the 'wardrobes' are upcycled painting easels.

The bathroom is stylishly tiled in matt black, with a granite bench top and granite basin. The toilet and shower are new and pristine. Cruelty free 'vegan' soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided, as well as fresh white towels.

There is a large laundry, formerly Caroline's 'wet area' for her art practice, which now has a granite bench top, twin steel sinks and a portable clothes line.

The house was converted from an art studio to accommodation in 2020. The walls and skirting boards, for posterity, were deliberately left will all the marks and paint drips from years of making paintings in the space, with everything was thoroughly washed and renovated for it's new incarnation as guest accommodation. The floor has been painted over with black Japan lacquer and reveals only a tiny portion of all the marks built up over the years, retaining a thick patina and texture of paint layers. Many of the works in the space were made right there, and reflect the location and view that guests are now able to enjoy.

Mat and Caroline are absolute dog lovers and have an English Springer Spaniel, Willow, who is extremely friendly, and may greet you on arrival. We regret we are unable to host any pets while she is still a puppy.

The house area is fenced, and has a gate leading to the water, as well as a special viewing spot where you can sip your sunset cocktails at the water's edge.

There are many beautiful walks nearby including the historical Dray Track, one of Bruny Island's most popular tracks, and it goes right past the house via the road.

Mat and Caroline live on the property in the main house, and Caroline has a working studio shed behind the Arthouse Bruny guest house. You will have total privacy, as the buildings are all totally separate.

Where you’ll be

Alonnah, Tasmania, Australia

Arthouse Bruny Island is on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is about a half hour walk to the nearby township of Alonnah, where there is a sandy beach, as well as a post office, a small store and the pub with takeaway and a bottle shop. The house is at the beginning of Sheepwash Bay, with wonderful kayaking and fishing. The 180 degree view from the house is of the ocean and the Hartz Ranges from the south, moving west, then north all the way Mt Wellington in Hobart. There is a very beautiful and easy walk next to the house, the Dray Track, which meanders through the bush to the beach and to Alonnah. About 10 minutes further by car is the Bruny Island Winery with a great restaurant. Another 20 minutes will take you to the historical lighthouse or in the other direction, to the famous surf beach and National Park, Cloudy Bay. Further north is the famous Neck at Great Bay, and further again, the Bruny Island Cheesery and then Get Shucked, where you can enjoy fresh oysters.

I am a contemporary visual artist (with Bett Gallery) and have a home on Bruny Island with my wonderful writer/ consultant husband Mat. We love walking, hiking and kayaking around Bruny. We also love animals and welcome dogs to our Bruny Island home and to Arthouse Hobart One. When in Hobart we indulge ourselves in great art, sumptuous food, wonderful theatre and enjoy sensational views, particularly from one of our favourite spots, Mount Wellington. I can't live without my daily creative routine, spending hours making work in my waterfront Bruny studio that informs so much of my art practice. I have lived and travelled in many different countries, including Austria where I went to school and university. When travelling we always stay in Airbnb accommodation. We love hosting guests and offering the same warm, personal and comfortable experiences that we continue to enjoy in the many different places we have stayed. We feel privileged that we have such a wonderful life and love to share it with others.
