Driving tips:
There are 3 roads leading to Big Bear. Hwy 330 /18 is the most winding road with many sharp turns but there are many places where you can stop if you get car sick.
Driving in winter:
With a heavy snowfall there could be a potential road closure but since there are three roads to Big Bear so even if one road is closed, the other stay open. Make sure to have a full tank of gas (or a full charge), some food, water, blanket, warm clothes, and shovel in case the road conditions suddenly worsen. Caltrans require in winter to always carry the tire chains. 4WD and AWD cars usually are not required to put on the chains but they do need to carry the chains nonetheless. Practice installing the chains in your driveway before you hit the road (chains must be installed on the drive wheels; learn if your car is front or rear wheel drive). If you don’t want to be bothered, there are usually guys available to help the drivers for a nominal fee to put on the chains.
To check the road condition and chain requirements check the QuickMap or install QuickMap mobile app and select the options for chain control and lane closures. You can also follow @caltrans8 on Xwitter for the updates or socalmountains dot com
