Neighborhood highlights

Whitehead is a quiet town with a village atmosphere and is Northern Ireland´s little secret time capsule of Victorian architecture by the sea.
Within walking distance of the house is a home bakery, a green grocer and a farm butcher with local fresh produce. There are two pubs, a Spar supermarket, two chemists, a post office, restaurants and coffee shops dotted around!

The Blackhead coastal path
How about a beautiful one hour walk from my house, down to the promenade with its colourful houses and a walk along the coast to the lighthouse at Blackhead, no cars in sight, just you and the sea. There are caves to discover and views right over to Scotland and the Copeland Islands and County Down on the other side of the lough.

The Gobbins Cliff Path Tour
Only 5 mins by car from my house, on the Islandmagee peninsula, is the only guided adventure walk of its kind in Europe. Originally designed by a Victorian Engineer, Berkeley Dean Wise over a hundred years ago, it has been restored recently with bridges that jut out over the cliffs and tiny paths that hug the cliff edge.
It has to be booked online in advance as it´s a guided 3 hr tour and very popular!
Tours start at the Gobbins visitors centre, run by the National Trust.
Personally I think its the number (3) thing to experience after the Giants Causeway of course and the spectacular scenic coastal drive up north!

The Rinka
Close to the Gobbins visitors centre is "The Rinka".
No trip to this area would be complete without savouring this families home made ice cream. It used to be a dance hall in the 50´s and was a local secret as a mecca for their delicious ice cream for generations. Not anymore as they were featured on the TV program "Hairy Bikers" !

Whitehead Railway Museum & Edwardian Tearoom
Just a five minute walk from the house is the Railway museum that houses a steam engine which is still in use, as well as lots of useful information for those steam enthusiasts out there! Day trips to Belfast and Portrush on a steam train!

Game of Thrones
5 mins from the house is the old disused quarry that was used to film the backdrop for the massive wall in Game of Thrones. There is no access into the quarry, as its private property, but you can see it from the road as you are driving past!

Glenoe Waterfall
Past the quarry, you drive not far to a beautiful waterfall in the beautiful traditional hilly irish village called Glenoe. Its very secluded and you can walk around and view the water from different levels. If you believe in fairies go there and make a wish!

Whiteheads Victorian fair
Every year in November the town hosts a Victorian Fair. The townspeople dress up in Victorian garb, there are street musicians, fair ground hobby horses and craft fairs. There comes thousands of people from all over Ireland to visit this event, its really lovely!
