We are located a short 10 minutes drive from downtown Kona, the Kona pier (start and end point of the Ironman held in October each year) and the beaches along Alii Drive! The approximate 1000ft elevation offer a comfortable 5-10 deg cooler retreat after a day at the beach.
Kona is known for its year round sunny weather daily temperatures ranging from 81 to 86 degrees. World class beaches and dining. Attractions such as swimming with dolphins, body glove snorkel tours, volcano helicopter tours, submarine and glass bottom boat tours are only a few to mention. This is a marine preserve and you can swim with sea turtles, and all the other tropical fish found in Hawaii's waters. Ocean kayaking and snorkeling are favorite activities at this spot. Coffee farms offer tours and samples of famous Kona coffee throughout the rural areas.
Kaahaluu Beach Park 15 minutes away. This has got to be one of the best snorkeling places in the world. It is a pretty, but unpretentious setting. One of the things that makes it good, in addition to the variety of fish you will see, is the fact that it is a really safe place to snorkel. It is good for children, older people, or those who can't swim. traditional Hawaiian Luaus are offered at several locations, and well worth the cost. Everyone should visit the hilton waikoloa village for a full day trip. Free transport to galleries, dolphin quest, restaurants and shops. The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii has a number of ongoing experiments and applications of ocean technology, all very interesting.
Puuhonau O Honaunau National Historic Park (30 minutes away), or the City of Refuge (highly recommended) gives you the feel for the former way of life in a partially restored 16th century village. You will see thatched huts, canoes, idols, and a temple that has the bones of several Hawaiian chiefs. Set on a peaceful white sand beach. Two Step, nicknamed such because of the land formation underwater, is right in this area, about a hundred yards north of the City of Refuge. It's another fantastic place for either snorkeling or diving.
Hapuna Beach is 30 minutes away but probably as close to a "perfect" beach as you'll find in the state with fine, golden white sand maybe half a mile long and a couple hundred feet wide. It's a fine place for building sand castles and boogie boarding. There's seldom much of an undertow. It has a small snack bar, and showers. Conde Nast Traveler magazine has declared this the best beach in the nation. The beach is about a half an hour's drive north of Kailua-Kona near the 69 mile marker off Highway 19.
With abundant marine and wildlife, Kona remains unspoiled and has much diversity to explore. Activities include Catamaran rides, golf, wildlife viewing, tennis, diving, snorkeling, surfing, parasailing, sport fishing, beaches, tropical garden tours, real submarine tours (highly recommended), hiking, biking, horseback riding, local outdoor markets, world class shopping, sunset dinner cruises, fabulous restaurants, cinemas, museums, boating, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, helicopter tours, volcanic exploration, dolphin shows, and finding sea turtles on Kealakekua Bay just 20 minutes away.
A washer and dryer are available (for a small fee) for those guests who may require some refreshing of atire.

We had a fantastic time at James and Flora's Ohana. They are wonderful people, and made us feel completely at home. It was the opposite of a "tourist experience"!. The fresh coffee in the morning, with fresh fruit, or fresh juice, and breakfast, along with excellent conversation was a great way to start the day.
The place was very comfortable, with an ecstatic view out the huge screened windows. The bird song, chicken clucking, cat meowing and (sometimes) pig grunting made you feel like you were in a very different world. James' suggestions for places to visit were great, and very helpful.
I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to go off of the beaten tourist path, and we would go back again in a heartbeat.
My husband and I absolutely loved James and Flora's treehouse home! It was exactly as they described. We felt like we were literally staying in a tree in the rain-forest (crazy frog noises and all), but the screens that kept the bugs out and the comfortable accommodations were second to none. The shower is amazing. It is an experience we will never forget!
James was full of recommendations for fun stuff to do on the island. We followed his advice and hiked to the Green Sand Beach (amazing!) and swam around the Iron Man area downtown. The treehouse provides beach towels, snorkel gear, coolers, etc- it was perfect. The fresh coffee and breakfast he served every morning started our day off great!
I've already sent multiple friends and family this air bnb listing and suggested they all make plans to stay here the next time they visit Hawaii. My husband and I can't wait to come back. Aloha!
The Treehouse Ohana feels like you're staying in a suite. Very nice. Great shower and bathroom. Large, open living room with a stunning view! Hosts James and Flora were great! Felt like close friends instantly. James' breakfasts with his own James Bean coffee were wonderful and delicious! Overall, very enjoyable experience
We feel so lucky to have had the chance to stay in James and Flora's magical tree house. Such an amazing spot! James and Flora were such wonderful hosts.
Staying with James & Flora was the best decision we could have made. The place itself is very unique with a cabin-in-the-woods/farmhouse feel to it and the giant tree is very much a part of it. James and Flora themselves are really what make this place a gem though. James made us breakfast each day (in addition to his own coffee, try it!), going over our plans with us, joking around, and adding great suggestions. All that definitely made us look forward to each morning. They had beach and snorkel gear that they were more than happy to let us borrow in addition to maps and books about the area.
If having a thin barrier between yourself and nature is very difficult for you, this may not be your kind of place. It's very open air with screening to keep out the mosquitos (which we had no problems with the entire time) and you can hear the sounds of nature very clearly. To us that added to the great experience, but may not be for everyone.
I cannot emphasize enough how kind James & Flora are. You would be hard pressed to find kinder people to stay with. They treat you like great friends right upon meeting them and have invaluable information about the island.
Overall it would be very difficult to find a more unique experience with nicer hosts.
My family and I had a terrific time staying in James' treehouse. It was definitely a one of a kind experience with the open air concept and all. James made great breakfasts every day, and even accommodated my vegan diet. He would also go over our plans for the day, making suggestions for activities that only a local could make. It made our trip so much better. Thanks James!
The treehouse is in a stunning location, nestled in the forest, and James and Flora are great hosts. James was exceedingly helpful with all our annoying traveller questions and recommended some great restaurants and sights. We loved this place and would come back anytime, but if you're not a nature lover, this place may not be for you! It is hawaiian style, with no glass windows, but meshing to keep out the mosquitoes, which means you feel you are in the forest-a unique experience. We loved the forest sounds at night, and weren't bothered by spiders, or roaches(you are in the forest after all), and fell in love with the many cats they have! They even bought us a bottle of wine because it was our honeymoon, and have some great snorkel gear for guests to use, along with beach towels etc. The house is just 10 mins away from central Kona by car, so very convenient, but feels like you're in the rainforest, away from the madness. Thanks James and Flora for a lovely time!
James is the most aloha guy you can meet on the island. The place is amazing and we enjoyed our stay very much.
Boogie boards, snorkeling equipments, beach towels, etc. are also provided. Definitely on top of my list whenever I visit big island again.
James and Flora were AMAZING. Starting the morning off with James Bean coffee and good conversation make a world of difference. James had tons of suggestions for exploring the island and if it wasn't for the pesky ironman I would have tried them all. Overall a fantastic experience with genuinely good people. I recommend the tree house to everyone.
If you enjoy open air living you'll really enjoy James and Flora's place. There were 5 of us and the accommodations worked out fine once the hot water and blanket situation were figured out. It had rained the night before and the temps. were a little chilly the first couple nights with the many screened walls. Every morning breakfast on the patio was fresh and delicious. It included cereal, the option of croissants or muffins, fresh local fruit and James' home grown coffee. In addition, James' cheerful attitude helped to jump start the day almost as much as his coffee.
The location worked well for us being in the hills of Kailua-Kona which was only a few minutes from the main thoroughfare Ali'i Drive offering us access to the shopping centers, resturants and beaches in town.
Waking to the view of the ocean, the tropical landscape and the sounds of birds and frogs was idyllically Big island.
We recommend the Ohana Treehouse to those looking for a natural, local feel. James and Flora are delightful hosts. Thank you for sharing with us. Aloha,Diane,Ry, Aiko, Maylani and Ramona
