We recommend a car for visits to any location on the Big Island. There is much to see and do, but everything is very spread out and the island has minimal public transportation.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Relaxed atmosphere, great hospitality, beautiful views, fine breakfast, and a great location close to mystical snorkeling! We'll be back. Thank you such a fine place to stay on the Big Island.
What a magical place to stay! Michael, Greg and Hanna are all such warm, thoughtful and interesting people; they were incredible hosts. As soon as we got there, Hanna brought out snacks for us of fresh local fruits, nuts and juice. What a welcome! The guest rooms were actually even more beautiful and relaxing than the write ups (with beautiful plants, little fragrant flowers from their gardens, thoughtful Hawaiian books and local magazines, spa robes and towels, etc). The common areas both on the lanai and in the common spaces all had great views and the fostered conversation with other interesting guests. They have a great hot tub with a view overlooking the old plantation/garden and ocean which is in great shape (hot tubs can be sketchy, right? Theirs is impeccable). The food... I have never eaten so well! Besides being incredible chefs and entertainers, they've gathered quite a collection of all the menus from surrounding restaurants and have it organized well so you can plan that part out. They also make great recommendations for local tours and offer to make arrangements for them. We definitely want to come back!
This views, the smells, and the spirit of this home and amazing property were way above our expectations. Much to share and love here. We stayed in the ohana cabin and found it delightful, a sunset swing overlooking the K Bay joyful beyond words, and the hospitality of the all the hosts and even the other guests very healing. Thank you Michael, Greg and Coola and others who make this place an amazing sanctuary. It is in excellent location with much to explore close.
What a wonderful way to start our Hawaiian vacation, at Michael and Greg's guesthouse! I have nothing but great things to say about this place and about the experience of staying here.
A thoughtful balance between an overly intimate bed-and-breakfast and a totally impersonal hotel, this place is beautifully located and beautifully set up. Located at about coffee-growing elevation high above the coast south of Kona, there are amazing coastline views from Captain Cook to the north down past the Place of Refuge to the south, and these vista could be seen not only from our room and the guesthouse veranda but also from the idyllically-sited hot tub.
With a late afternoon flight arrival, we didn't get to the guesthouse until after dark (follow the hosts' directions carefully or you're likely to spend some time going around in circles trying to figure out Hawaii's unique house-numbering system). We brought a snack with us, which was easy to round out with fruit and coffee/tea and fresh-baked brownies (!) from the spacious and well-appointed kitchen. In the morning it was amazing to take a shower in the outside showers where ferns and bromeliads covered the lava rock walls...we never did bother to use the seemingly luxurious indoor shower. Breakfast choices were varied and generous, and eating at one of the tables on the veranda meant plenty of chances to take in yet more of the views while learning about the quirks of the colorful geckos who cheekily try to sample your breakfast when your attention wanders.
Michael and Greg were incredibly generous and genial hosts, responsive to requests and open with info about activities, sights, etc.
Our only regret was that our commitments meant that we spent only one night here...next time (and we absolutely plan there to be a next time) we will be sure to book more time at this gem of a place.

Our time at Ka awa Loa Plantation was so comfortable and relaxing. The outdoor lava showers were to die for, and our room was lovely, quiet and clean. The endless wrap around porch with a fabulous view of the ocean was unforgettable. The real gem at this property, however, is Hannah: our welcoming party, concierge, and breakfast chef. She brings new meaning to the word hospitality, truly, and we loved chatting and being around her whenever we were coming or going. We will definitely be back!
WOW, Fantastic place to stay.
Me and my husband stayed in the Plantation suite for two perfect nights.
The room was amazing and the breakfast very good!!!
