The space
In setting out to find lodging that keeps Portland weird, yet refined, I came across the Kuza Garden Cottage. It’s a place-perfect, one-of-a-kind secluded wonderland that delivers far more than a mere lodging experience.

The neighborhood itself (just down the way from Alberta Arts District) is residential, yet the best of anything you might need or want is within walking distance. Refreshing and uncommon in every way, this 1922 carriage/guest house with thoughtful updates is just what I’d hoped it would be -- a stay-cation from my downtown Portland life; an out-of-the-norm, rustic-posh experience that doesn’t require hassle.

Once inside the Kuza Cabin, you feel as though you’ve just stepped into a Japanese mountain retreat. The expansive living room and kitchen utilize space in exemplary ways. The large, L-shaped couch immediately invites you to take a load off. And the adjoining kitchen offers a truly rustic and refined functionality.

And then comes the bed & bath nook, set apart from the kitchen and living room in devoted attention to lavish simplicity. The bathroom is set apart from the bedroom by a curtain, in true cabin fashion. The new, queen-size bed is engineered within a cove and its own window, flat-screen TV and bedside stand. The white-tiled bathroom, just off the bedroom nook and separated from the bedroom by a curtain, comes with a generous, handicapped accessible shower; modern yet simple, in further consideration to what feels like being in a Japanese mountainous escape.

You can create your own experience here -- get groceries from New Seasons, just a few blocks away and spend your time soaking, plunging and cooking for yourself. Or you can walk outside your door and mingle with the neighbors in some of Portland’s finest restaurants and foxiest bars. You can take a Yoga class across the street or grab a cappuccino at Extracto.
