Lovely double room with patio doors out to garden and pool area, with desk and built-in wardrobe in a charming Andalusian villa with a private pool in Marbella. In a walled plot, private urbanisation views to Gibraltar and mountain views too. Private and secluded yet within easy reach of the Marbella, beaches, and the motorway to Malaga, the airport and beyond. Brand new fibre optic Internet. Private bathroom (not en-suite).
The space
JacAL Shack is a co-living and co-working space and, more than just a location, we are building a network of creatives, entrepreneurs, nomads, academics, and generally awesome people. If it feels right for you, we'd love you to be part of our tribe.
The villa itself has lots of space, both inside and out, so it's easy to be private or sociable, as you like.
We rent out three rooms in total, and you'll be with like-minded folk — with the possibility to network in the future as well. Jac and I are sometimes (not always) there, either together or individually.
All the rooms have their own bathrooms (two are en-suite). The kitchen is communal, and there's a large salon/co-working area, which is also shared. In addition, there's a lot of communal space outside: three terraces — two with BBQs — and a swimming pool.
We charge a cleaning fee to prepare your room before your arrival and after your departure, and we're all responsible for cleaning during our stay in the villa. This means taking care of the communal areas as well as your private space. If you'd like us to arrange cleaning services during your stay, please let us know and we can provide a quote. We also provide additional bedding, and there's a utility room for washing clothes.
Co-living can be challenging — it helps if you wash your dishes after you've eaten — and tremendous fun.
You'll also have the chance to share skills as well as stories about your various experiences. Co-working is great for productivity, and the environment has inspired many previous guests. Some have developed their businesses, others have recharged, some have contemplated the next stage of a major life transition, and one singer-songwriter wrote a song about love she never thought she'd write, then performed it as part of a live-streamed concert from the terrace under the olive tree.
The villa is located in a private urbanisation in the low hills of Río Real in east Marbella. It's private and walled, with plenty of space for parking inside the grounds. The area is generally set up for cars, but you can get by on public transport. It really depends on how fit you are and how much you like walking. The buses are good — clean and cheap — though they can seem a bit slow (writing as a Londoner!). Still, there's always great scenery to take in, and you start to adapt to a more Spanish way of life. Some guests have hired scooters, and that's also worked well for them.
How far is the beach?
2 km: 10 minutes by car, 15 mins by bike, 25 mins by bus, and 30 mins walking (downhill — more coming home!).
How far is Marbella Old Town?
3.7 km: 15 mins by car, 20 mins by bike (downhill), 30 mins by bus, and about 45 mins walking (downhill).
How close are the supermarkets?
There are two supermarkets about 10 mins' drive away. You can get the bus, and both offer delivery — you can order online. There's also a little shop selling the basics (bread, milk, coffee, beer, cigarettes, etc.) about a 20-minute walk away.
How far is the bus stop?
About 15 minutes away. The bus takes you to the beach, town, a large shopping centre, and the main bus station. From there, you can get buses to the airport and throughout the region and beyond.
Andalusia is a spectacular part of the world. Tarifa, Bolonia, Sevilla, Ronda, and Granada are all well worth seeing, and Málaga is cool too.
Marbella can give you pretty much whatever experience you want. There are lots of sporting facilities — yoga, water sports, tennis, golf, horse riding — as well as clubs and beach clubs, great restaurants ranging from Michelin dining to beach cafés to chill in, and a thriving business network. Marbella has both an international and Spanish community, and it's currently going through a rebirth as a centre for creativity, technology, and innovation as part of the Marbella 2.0 project. Andalusia is also being positioned as a tech hub generally, especially out of season.
Marbella is quite an expensive location, and our villa is cheaper than most accommodation. There are two primary reasons for this: firstly, it's charming but also a little run down — and the price reflects that. Secondly, there are many reasons why people may want to budget while working on a creative project or new business venture, and we want to support that by opening up the experiences and opportunities Marbella has to offer. We provide a 28% discount for stays longer than one month.
The general vibe of the villa is quite rustic, even though it's close to town and all the amenities on offer. It's an artists' house — we've got good internet, but no television. We have lots of windows, and we don't have air conditioning, partly because we don't think we need it and partly because it's so bad for the environment. There are fans for the summer, individual heaters, and a fireplace in the winter if you feel like gathering wood.
We're currently running an eco-project in the grounds (voted for by previous guests), which involves letting the grass grow long to encourage biodiversity. Please note there is an electricity pylon in the grounds, as a power line runs through the area. This is quite common in the region.
We also have fruit trees — you can pick lemons, mandarins, pomegranates, and almonds when in season — as well as Andalusian olive trees.

Andalusia is absolutely gorgeous - we love the quality of light and the beautiful sunsets. Your close to golf courses, a horse riding school, the bars and restaurants along the beach and in Marbella, beach clubs, while Peurto Banus offers designer shopping and has some of the most exclusive world yachts.
