THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA

Hill Country State Natural Area is a scenic mosaic of rocky hills, seasonal flowing springs, oak mottes, grasslands and canyons. The terrain ranges from flat, broad creek bottoms to steep, rocky canyons up to 2,000 feet high.
West Verde Creek provides a small oasis against the backdrop of rocky hills and limestone cliffs. The natural area provides habitat for a great variety of birds, mammals and amphibians, as well as various reptiles. Several different plant communities grow here, too. It is only 5 miles from Tarpley Guesthouse.
******************
Lost Maples State Natural Area: A large, pristine area of beautiful hills and canyons on the upper Sabinal River in the Edwards Plateau Region of Texas. It is designated a Natural Area, rather than a State Park, which means the primary focus is the maintenance and protection of the property's natural state
******************
Garner State Park: A great place to visit for a swim or hike, or to enjoy a relaxing weekend. With 2.9 miles of Frio River winding through 1,774 acres of scenic Hill Country terrain, the park offers lots to see and do. Swim in the Frio River or float its waters on an inner tube, operate a paddle boat, and hike 16 miles of scenic trails. You can also camp, study nature, picnic, canoe, fish, play miniature golf, geocache and ride bikes. And, of course, you can dance. If you plan to swim or float at the park, read through our swimming safety tips before you come.

Medina River: To add some adventure and relaxation to your trip, visit Medina River. A location known for tubing, fishing and wildlife watching.
******************
Frio River: A beautiful river that winds through the heart of the Texas Hill Country, running shallow and crystal clear with spring-fed waters. When you go for a dip in the Frio, you’ll love the pretty views overhead, including the tall limestone bluffs, big cypress trees, and stunning birds. If you’re looking for a great place to fish, canoe, kayak or tube, this river’s for you.
******************
Bandera Rodeos and gunfight reenactments: It is no wonder why the city of Bandera is known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World”. This small town is the epitome of western life including local rodeos and historic gunfight reenactments. Taking in either of these events will transport you back to the days when the west was being settled and cowboys tended the land.
