About this listing
Alicudi is one of the eight islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago, a volcanic island chain north of Sicily. It is one of the most particular islands in the chain because there are no streets (only stone-paved tracks and stairs), no cars, and baggage and the shopping are carried by mules lead by the local boys who lives on the island. The island is filled with a magic tranquillity and simplicity. There are just two shops, one bar, and one restaurant. Dinners can be arranged in the homes of local fishermen (by appointment).
From the second half of July till the beginning of September the atmosphere changes a little, with the arrival of the people who have come for many years to the island. At sunset, after having spent the day at sea they all meet at the old dock to get a drink before returning to their homes uphill. For those who wish to participate, private parties (very open and informal) are sometimes organized as well as dancing by the seaside organized by the local youth.
Our home is situated high above the coast (15/20 minutes walking) and offers breathtaking views of the archipelago. The house is a traditional Aeolian home, featuring a long terrace that runs its full length. During the day, the view looks out onto the additional islands and at night, a full starry sky. All of the rooms look out onto the terrace, which in the summer months becomes the heart of daily activity. There are three bedrooms with full sized beds (one of them can be arranged with four single bed or two single and one full size bed) all offering sea views and one large bathroom. The kitchen is well loved and fully functional with a small gas stove, an electric oven and plenty of storage. All the rooms are decorated with lively colours and simple furnishings that reflect the natural surroundings. Next to the main house there is small stair that leads to two additional bedrooms and another terrace that runs the length of these two rooms. The house, which also includes a small garden with an outdoor shower that looks out onto the island of Filicudi. Our home has also been featured in the publication “New Seaside Interiors”, a book edited by Angelica Taschen (2008, TASCHEN, pp. 116-121).
Use water with attention: we are on a island!
Not drinkable water at home...
When you leave take down your garbage...
Alicudi is trip back in time, a place to slow down to enjoy the exquisite pleasures of nature. Giulia's house is enchanting, a perfect perch for lazing and gazing at the sea. We enjoyed cooking beautiful food in the rustic kitchen, the still and quiet of the expansive balcony, and our daily treks down the steep hill to swim in the clearest of water and slurp delicious granita.
This is just the most enchanting place one can possibly go. Alicudi is a special place in the world to begin with. This antique house is so charming and also functional, its terrace alone justifies staying here. This would be a perfect place for a larger group to stay as there is lots of space. We loved simply reading on the terrace with the worlds most astounding view of the other aeolians, it never seems quite real. A donkey can bring your bags up and down, but be aware the walk up to the house is not trivial ( though well worth it). There is nice swimming around the island, very friendly people. Several groceries with good paninis and it's possible to eat at a local fisherman's house though we simply cooked all our meals in the big ancient kitchen. Overall very enchanting and highly recommended, especially with a big group to make it a good value. The owners friend met us in the port and arranged the donkeys, she was very kind and helpful and interesting to talk with regarding the island and it's inhabitants
We are not very satisfy. The place is beautiful that is for sure but Giuila didn't tell us that you had to climb for 30 min to get there and come back from the sea everyday also. It's a long ascension and you have to be in a good shape. My mother was suppose to stay in the house with a friend of hers but I had to stay because the climbing is to hard... The second point is that the house is poorly maintained, the paintings are falling down, they built a outdoor roof wilhe we were there, and had to clean also after we arrive (and we arrive 10 days after our date and paid the same so they could have done that before) there are cockroaches in the small kitchen where the equipment is again very poor. the owner don't prepare the house (like I do) with toilet paper, soap, oil, (email hidden)d you only find the small rest of the precedent hosts... She didn't tell us that the food was very expensive, and had to be carry by a mule, so we advise you to buy your food in Milazzo o Palermo before coming. Also Giulia 's add says 1000 euros a month but then when you contact her she says that she forgot to change the price and make you pay more... But the price didn't change from Marc when we booked, till now. I think this is dishonest. The location is beautiful and Michaela who took care of us is a wonderful woman ! Thanks to her.
I am really disappointed by your complains. And honestly I do not agree with most of them!
First, about "climbing up": in my description it is written that you have to go up 15/20 minuts; that's the time we take also with children, anyway I can change to 20/30 minuts following your suggestion, but I went up with little children on my shoulder and with my 79 years old father. It is true that you have to be in good shape, but you can do it slowly and it is a pleasure! More over, we spoke a lot through mail before you reserved and you didn't ask me specifically if it was suitable for your mother... It is certainly not my interest (and surely not my way of behave) to mislead my guests!
Second: that the house " is poorly maintained, the paintings are falling dow", really!! We really do not have the same taste! The beautifulness of our house is exactly that we didn't transform it in a new painted and new looking house! Every guests, not only from Airbnb, adored the charme of the house like this. You can say that in the kitchen we can repaint with the white, I do agree, but outside, and the colored rooms, are magic like this!
Third: the fact that you arrived 10 days after your reservation: well, you changed your plans several time and actually every time you informed me at the last minut so that Michaela had to re-organize herself many time; and you are really not fair with me as when your husband phoned me to tell me that no, you where not arriving the day after, I immidiatly propose him to change the Airbnb reservation so that I could propose the house to other guests for that 10 days and give you back some money, but HE SAID NO, IT IS NOT NECESSARY!! And now you are complaining with me for this? I am a correct person and host. Also for the monthly price I did not change my proposition, or profit or mislead..it is true that I did not organize my calendar price with the monthly price, this is my fault and I have immidiatly admitted it with you. But I have been clear since the beginning with you as with all other guests. We discussed for a while the right price together, as I didn't want of course to make you the same price as for four weeks! You can say I am not precise with my price calendar, not that I am not honest! It is a heavy thing to say. It is true that when YOU asked me in the middle of your stay to pay less then what decided together, I said that it what not possible for me. You can always ask, but it is not correct to expect to have your contract changed in the middle of the period, because as I explained you, I have done my evaluation to decide for a long rent instead of more short rents.
And more: you say I should have told you that food is expansive? But come on! First, "expansive" is a relative concept, for me the food in alicudi t is a little more expansive then Siena, probably it is quite more expansive then Catania, but less then London! I don't know!! It is a holiday place, like many others. And about the mule, I told you!! I also ask you if you wanted me to reserve one for you and you said yes without complains!
Again: the kitchen IS WELL EQUIPPED, we stay even in15 person in August and have every evening wonderful dinner cooking for all! It is not four stars dishes or pans but very well organized to leave on the see...
Finally: it is Michaela that prepare the house, I will tell her to put some toilet paper, oil and sugar as I DO in my house in Tuscany, but on the contrary she usually prepare a cake for our guests or similar...as you have seen the shops are not next door so it is hard for her to keep under control the basic food.. But usually she tells you what you will find at home and what you will not find when meet you at the dock.
I love our place in Alicudi, and will continue to propose it to people who usually fall in love with it.
