About this listing

The space

The charming Ainslie Bedroom features two cosy twin beds and looks inland to Ardrossan Road and Seamill.

For guests who love traditional Victorian architecture and panoramic Scottish scenery, Carlton Seamill has much to offer.

An impressive, stone-built, Scottish Victorian house, dated 1883, Carlton occupies an ideal location at Seamill, on the Ayrshire coast. It enjoys a commanding view, over Seamill shore and beach, to the world-famous Firth of Clyde and the beautiful, mountainous Isle of Arran.

The Rennie Family have cherished Carlton carefully, for over 60 years. With most of its original period features still intact, it is a fine example of a Scottish Victorian family home. Guests frequently remark on the house’s relaxing, “get-away-from-it-all” atmosphere and on the craftsmanship, style and graciousness that are characteristic of the Victorian era.

On the ground-floor, the handsome, historically-detailed reception rooms afford magnificent views, over the Rose Garden and the Croquet Lawn, towards the peaks of Arran.

Throughout the house, Carlton’s elegant Victorian staircase conveys a feeling of light and spaciousness, leading to the comfortable, first-floor guest-accommodation.

Carlton’s west-facing garden-gate provides easy access to Seamill’s extensive, sandy beach – only a stone’s-throw away. Our guests typically enjoy walking along the beach on a lovely evening, watching the wheeling flocks of seabirds and the gregarious colonies of seals. If our guests are very fortunate, they may witness one of the fabulous, breathtaking sunsets for which the Firth of Clyde is renowned. At the least, lungfuls of healthy sea-air are guaranteed!

Some of Scotland’s finest restaurants are only a short drive from Carlton. For example, “Fins” (Seafood Restaurant) at Fencebay, Fairlie; “Braidwoods”, near Dalry; "The Waterside”, near Seamill. Information about these is readily found on the Internet.

The Seamill Hydro Hotel (bars and restaurants) and the Merrick Hotel (bar and restaurant) are only a few minutes’ walk away – along Ardrossan Road or, better still, just along the beach.

The photos shows a little bit more than it really is. We had the room with the best view, which is really wonderful and unique. But we think that the stay was a little bit overpriced (shared bathroom) and there is some smell in the air. The landscape around the house is amazing and you can do nice walks along the seaside.

Response from Avril:
Thank you for staying here, Tobias. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. However, I wish to reply to your comments above. Firstly, Carlton is indeed a unique Victorian house. There are far too few houses like it left in Scotland because Victorian architecture has only quite recently started to be "listed" for conservation. The uniqueness of our property is a major part of our USP. Secondly, our B & B prices are set to be less than half those of the neighbouring large hotel. Our very reasonable prices make it affordable for price-conscious people to stay in Seamill. Thirdly, I know that, as Swiss people, you are unused to the seaside and the smell of fresh seaweed that comes with it, especially after high tides. Seaweed smells are entirely natural and normal in coastal areas! They soon disappear as the fresh seaweed dries out. And, fourthly, you were aware that it's a shared bathroom before you booked. We have been strongly advised against so-called "en-suites" by professional experts. "En-suites" would be very expensive to install, and would detract from the character of our lovely house. We are not in the luxury market - and our prices would be greatly higher, if we were. Instead, we offer "character and charm" par excellence - and we seek to attract guests who appreciate this. Travel safely! All the best! Avril. :)

Accommodation as described. Interesting old house, conveniently placed for our trip to Arran. Walking distance to several restaurants.

We stayed one night here and found Avril to be a friendly and welcoming host. As Avril had no other guests that day she kindly gave us a choice of 3 rooms. The room we chose was large and had a wonderful view of the sea and the Isle of Aaron from the huge windows. Avril is a great conversationalist who also had good advice on things to see and do in the area and where to eat. The property description portrays the house, perhaps as it used to be, rather than as it is now. The house is well over 100 years old but is showing its age and, in some areas, has become a little shabby. However, the amenities are clean and work fine, especially the new shower. Overall, the property is perhaps a little overpriced for what it is, but we enjoyed our stay and Avril's company. To spend a night here is an interesting experience and the breakfast Avril provides is both plentiful and very nicely presented.

My daughter and I had a lovely stay with Avril. We're both big fans of vintage styling, and Avril's Victorian home is the real thing! A friendly and attentive host; comfortable beds; a good breakfast, beautiful sea views. If you're expecting all mod cons - you won't find them here, but you will enjoy all the charm of yesteryear. We were only here for a short stay this time, but I'm going to return with my husband to visit some of the islands, and we definitely be staying at Carlton Seamill.
