A beautiful, romantic getaway located on the banks of Lough Atalia (a tidal inlet off Galway Bay in Galway City). This luxurious and historical Dutch barge has been lovingfully renovated over the past few years to turn it into an extremely spacious and comfortable dwelling. It is located right next to the famous G Hotel, the hugely popular Huntsman Inn and The Eye Cinema with shops and a bus stop close by. It is approximately a 15 minute walk to Eyre Square along the banks of Lough Atalia.

The space
If you are looking for something a little different, lots of privacy, and peace and quiet then look no further! If generic hotels and apartments have started to become somewhat of a blur, then this may be the experience you have been looking for! Perfect for a romantic getaway...

The boat is made up of a large kitchen with beautiful granite counter-tops and breakfast bar, a large open-plan dining area and lounge. The open plan lounge has a wood/turf burning stove and a wicker basket of turf will be supplied should the evenings in Galway get a little chilly, and you want to snuggle up in front of a real fire. There is a large, bright bathroom with a bath and shower. The beautifully-decorated cabin bedroom has a double bed and lots of storage.
Underfloor heating is set via a pre-programmed timer, and will come on at specified times to keep the interior nice and cosy.

It is important to note that this is an off-grid listing. We try to be as "green" as possible when it comes to energy. We use a combination of wind, solar and an on-board generator to meet the energy requirements of our valued guests, but this also means there are restrictions on certain appliances due to their high energy consumption. For cooking purposes there is a full-sized gas hob (all the best chefs use gas ;)), which is also used to boil water for tea/coffee.

Now, time for some maritime education :)
Lough Atalia is a protected inlet off Galway Bay, and therefore it is tidal! Catherina will go up and down with the tide. She will not always be floating. The tidal height at the time of your stay will be completely dependent on the lunar cycle. Spring tides (the highest tides) occur twice each lunar month all year long, without regard to the season. If the tides is not high enough at the time of your stay, the vessel will sit on a tidal flat. Also, the time that high tide, and low tide takes place changes day-by-day.
This a boat, and boats are on water. It is not an hotel, nor is it an apartment and this is what makes it a different experience to the norm :)

If a strong wind moves Catherina a little when she is floating...remember, it's a boat and that's fine, it's meant to move! If however, based on weather forecasts i.e. a status red warning is issued and it happens to align with very high tides, we reserve the right to cancel the booking at short notice if the safety of our guests is at risk. On the other hand, if you are lucky enough to have good weather, you can sit up on the deck with a beverage and enjoy the famous beautiful sunsets over Galway Bay and Galway City.

Catherina does not have designated parking. There are places very close by which we can suggest to you, but we do not bear any responsibility for parking itself. All of our guests to date who have required parking have had no issues by following the suggestions we provide. Of course, you will still need to cover the short distance (about a 2 minute walk) from the suggested parking areas to the vessel. If the weather is very bad upon your arrival and/or if you have a lot of luggage we can assist with a luggage drop-off very close to the boat, rather than having to carry it all over from the parking area. Please just let us know in advance of your arrival if you think you might like to do this.

For us, communication is key! We want to do our absolute best to ensure we get a 5-star review from every one of our valued guests. This helps us to continue to provide the best AirBnB in Galway City. Once guests have finalised their booking, we can discuss the best way to stay in touch with each other during your stay

Guest access
Guests will have sole use of the boat. All living areas are available to use excluding the wheelhouse, and some parts of the boat are restricted for safety reasons.

Other things to note
Underfloor heating, and a stove provide warmth. The heating is pre-programmed to come on at specific times automatically. The stove is available for your use, and there will be turf and kindling supplied. If you use the stove a lot, and need some additional kindling, you can pick some up at the nearby petrol station (map available on boat with location marked).

The boat is situated right next to the famous G Hotel and Huntsman Inn, both of which have bars and restaurants. The Eye Cinema is directly opposite, as is the Wellpark Retail Centre with it's cafes (G-Counter) and shops. A new Lidl store is currently also in development here and should be open in 2020. There is a convenience store about 4 minutes walking from the boat where you can purchase cooked food, snacks, beer/wine. A Coke Zero bike-share depot is situated nearby, and there is also a playground for children a minute away. There is a bus stop a minute from the boat and this will bring you directly into Eyre Square, at 15 minute intervals.
