We have lived and worked in the South East of Ireland all our lives ( except when in Middle East) and have comprehensive knowledge of the area, am now retired and willing to share same which would include places like for example Mount Juliet Golf Course and hotel which is adjoining the apartment (200 meters walk), Enniscorthy and Vinegar Hill, Wexford town, Kennedy Park, Dunbrody Famine ship experience, Waterford Crystal, Dunmore East fishing village, Passage East, Kilkenny City , Castle, Cathedral's. If you are into mountain trekking, Mount Leinster is 25 miles away and summit is 2610 feet high gives panoramic views of Wexford coastline round to Tramore in Co. Waterford. North you will see Carlow, Bagnalstown and west towards Goresbridge and Gowran. Another great mountain trek is to get dropped off near Ballymurphy (15 miles from Thomastown) and climb Blackstairs mountain (2411 feet) and walk along the top for about four miles down past a radio mast and through the forest towards Glynn village. This is a wonderful walk which I have done on a clear day many times. Only issue is you will need a drop off and pick up but its a delightful way to spend a day, top it off with a pint in Byrnes Pub, Glynn. For afternoon walks, you have Graiguenamanagh, walk the road to St. Mullins, have a coffee there and walk back by the river Barrow pathway. About 9 miles but a 5* scenic trip as is parking in Inistioge village and walking up to Woodstock Gardens and then on towards the Red House and back by the River Nore.6 miles. Thomastown where we live has visitor attractions which include Jerpoint Abbey and Mount Juliet golf course ( both can be viewed from apartment), Kilfane Glen Gardens. Kilkenny city is 11 miles away, a popular tourist destination has historic buildings such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral, Rothe House, Black Abbey and many more. Access by train is only 10 mins. walk away from the apartment.
There are 7 trains from Dublin and 6 to Dublin daily within a 10 minute walk and in Thomastown a further 10 minute walk away there are in total 20 buses passing trough going to Dublin and a further 22 coming back. Pick up is offered by host.
Other Things to Note
Wifi available throughout the apartment 12mbs and up to 50mbs is expected by Feb. . All BBC, ITV, CNN, Sky News (+200 more) and Irish TV are available and cross channel radio services including Classic FM. A DVD is also installed on the system. There is a hifi where you can play via Bluetooth any music. All modern German made appliances are installed, induction hob, cooker etc. It is peaceful here , well away from the road, only sounds are the birds early in the morning. There are some splendid views from the windows over the Mount Juliet Golf course and clubhouse. Further on there is forest covered Knockadrina and in the distance both the Commeragh mountains and Sliabh na Mban. On the other side , you can see Brandon Hill and the tail end of the Blackstairs range as well as Coppenagh Hill and Gap.
Thank you Michael and Sheila for such a wonderful stay. 5-star accommodations, all of the amenities you could want. Country-setting, a perfect location for a retreat. The hosts are very generous with their time and even took it upon themselves to show us nearby sights since we were traveling by bus. Easy walk to the train (10 min. ride to Kilkenny). Also appreciated the nice cupcakes upon arrival. Staying here was a highlight of our trip to Ireland.
Thank you Michael and Sheila for such a wonderful stay in your lovely apartment! It was so good to find a place close to where my daughter was calling home for the summer. Michael and Sheila were the perfect hosts and helped us line up a rental car, and gave us some wonderful tips on getting around to see all the gems that County Kilkenny and the neighboring counties offer. Beautiful area! I can't wait to come back. Lots to see and do.
The apartment was wonderful, clean, bright, and very accommodating to making meals, and just relaxing. The availability of wifi helped so we could plan out our excursions, with the help of Michael's detailed list of local history and sites to see.
Thank you for my short, sweet visit.
Than you very much Amy for the above review. Both of us appreciate it very much indeed and look forward to seeing you again in the future. So glad that the weather was dry and little or no rain during the visit, changes everything for the better...the weather.
Gorgeous apartment with everything you could need. We had a lovely weekend, which began with Michael's warm welcome. He and Sheila balance a genuine interest in their guests with leaving you to enjoy the privacy and comfort. Nothing is too much trouble and they are great fun.
This is a beautiful part of the country - peaceful and quiet so we slept really well, helped by a thoroughly comfortable and huge bed. 20 minutes from lots to do in the area but we would love to have had more time (and sun!) to enjoy the garden and sit out. Next time!
Michael and Sheila truly have the gift of hospitality! They have created a beautiful gem in the heart of the Irish countryside in Thomastown. Their apartment was perfect in every way. Fully stocked, meticulously clean, bright, spacious and comfortable. They really thought of everything, including welcoming us with an American flag and Sheila's delicious cupcakes! Michael took the time to help us several times with directions and recommendations which were all perfect and even spent a day driving us around the countryside. Sheila has decorated the apartment lovingly with luxury linens, towels and quality kitchen supplies. We had such a wonderful experience at the Jerpoint apartment that we were sad to have to leave. This is a lovely apartment hosted by lovely people! Thank you very much!!
We had a fantastic stay in this excellent accommodation in Thomastown. First of all, the hosts. Michael and Sheila were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and instantly made us feel at home. They were very knowledgeable about the area, and took time to show us around and make the most of our stay.
The accommodation itself was great. Nice and modern, as well as being quiet and in a fantastic location to explore this stunning (website hidden) Juliet is on the doorstep with many beautiful walks closeby, and Kilkenny less than 20 mins drive. There was fresh linen and plenty of towels and the kitchen was very well equipped. There is a nice big TV for a night in and the wifi worked very well.
All in all a great place to stay and thoroughly recommended to anyone wishing to visit this beautiful part of Ireland
A wonderful experience and a wonderful place to stay. The accommodation is very modern and it has all the facilities and equipment you could possible think of. You can cook, use wifi and live there for as long as you need. Michael and Sheila are incredibly hosts and extremely welcoming. They will probably I bite you in for coffee. There is a an amazing view from the house and you are but a short walk from the Mount Juliet estate as well as a quick drive from Thomastown which has some good pubs. This place is even better than the photos. Highly recommended. You'll have a great time in total peace and quiet.
I don't think you're going to find a better apartment than this on Air BnB. It really is a gem.
Michael and Sheila are naturally hospitable and we really enjoyed their company. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt welcome and relaxed.
The location is great, with a good view over the Nore Valley, Mount Juliet and beyond. As it was warm and sunny, we really enjoyed being able to sit out in the garden. The apartment is within walking distance of the village and the railway station, as well as the Mount Juliet estate and stud farm which was great for an early morning jog or lazy afternoon walk.
Thomastown itself is an interesting spot with lots of history, and it is very centrally located if you want to visit the surrounding area. We spent a day in KIlkenny, visited Graiguenamanagh, Borris, Inistioge and Bennetsbridge and also went walking on Mount Leinster while we were there.
The hosts have created an exceptional space that's airy, bright and furnished to the last. The attention to detail is remarkable, and everything you could possibly need is provided. We cooked and baked both evenings we stayed. It was just a pity we had to go back to work on the Monday as we would have loved to have had more time there, we were so relaxed.
If you're visiting the South East of Ireland, this is the perfect place to stay. We will be back.
Appreciate so much the review above, our first and Judith thank you so much for the lovely cake you baked. It was delicious. Glad you both enjoyed the week-end, good weather does help. We can assure you both of a hearty welcome the next time you decide to visit the south east of Ireland. Thank you.., S & M.
About the Host, Michael & Sheila
Sheila here, I am retired from the nursing profession after 40 years service in the local hospital. I have lived, worked and reared my family in Thomastown since getting married to Michael. My hobbies included reading, listening to radio and podcasts when walking, keeping up to date with current affairs and visits to the theatre. My real passion is cooking which I can indulge in since retiring. I also travel extensively to far "flung places" with Michael who doesn't allow the grass to grow under my feet!!!
Retired Irish Police Officer who then followed a hobby as a photographer into the professional realms and had my own studio in Thomastown. Had a wonderful time as a professional photographer, met Clint Eastwood and many other famous people along the way. I photographed over 500 weddings and have many happy memories tucked away in negative form in a filing cabinet. This is now converted in the attached listing. I have lived in Jerusalem with my family during the 1970's and worked with UN. As a result love to travel back there and keep a keen interest in developments in that part of the world. In the past year (2013). Love cycling and have toured Ireland on an electric bicycle, lazy maybe but lovely when going uphill. Enjoy plays, classical music but also oldies from 50's and 60's. Reading with Kobo ereader and using the ipad and other gadgets floats my boat also! Love nothing better than getting up early in the morning, going for a 5 mile walk, and listening to some podcasts, news or music on earphones. Am really conservative as far as food goes, movies favourite is Circle of Friends as I recall it being made just five miles away in Inistioge.
Our motto during life was always treat a person like you would like to be treated and remember " never criticise anyone until you have walked a mile in their shoes".
