The space
Cozy up over a former stable at our 1887 home in Old Louisville near downtown. Lots of love & attention go into making Little Carriage House on the Alley the perfect home for your Derby City adventures. The bohemian studio-ish space (featured on design site Apartment Therapy) has all the design-forward touches you'd expect from a national lifestyle writer, and you'll have access to inside tips from your host - I've written about Louisville's food and bourbon scene for 10 years!

This is your own four walls in a studio style flat over a former stable in Old Louisville, an intriguing, historic and primarily residential neighborhood that's a super quick drive to top restaurants and other adventures in Louisville.

Inspired by our own world travels we created this space from scratch to be a comfy and livable space for travelers looking for something a little edgier. You're staying in part of our home, not someone's 'investment property,' and it feels immediately personal. It's more than a place to sleep; Little Carriage House is a memorable part of your Louisville experience.

Now then. With 600+ square feet altogether, here's what to expect:

sʟᴇᴇᴘ ᴀɴᴅ ᴄʜɪʟʟ
A roomy, light-filled living/bedroom has a super comfy queen sized Tuft & Needle bed and high-quality linens (that's so important!) and a blue velvet small sofa and ottoman you will want to Instagram immediately. Roku TV comes preloaded with Netflix. Exposed, limewashed by hand brick, and touches like vintage 2x4s as trim make for a rustic/industrial vibe; and landed this space on home design site Apartment Therapy. A small rack with hangers provides space for your things. There's a window unit AC in here to keep things cool.

ᴱᴬᵀ⸴ ᴰᴿᴵᴺᴷ⸴ ᴮᴱ ᴹᴱᴿᴿʸ
A small dining room that's open to the kitchen has a vintage dining table (that does double duty as a work desk) and shelving crafted of reclaimed Kentucky horse farm fencing. The battered, beaten wood floor planks are original. Another window unit AC in here cools this area.

*****

ᴄᴏᴏᴋ
The little kitchen is complete with full size stove, an amazing vintage farm sink, and full size fridge. Dishes are DIY here (as in no dishwasher) and you'll find dishware, cookware including cutlery, a toaster, and a coffee pot.

*****

ᴡᴀsʜ ᴜᴘ
A VERY compact bathroom with equally compact (I mean it, it's teeny!) step-in shower. Let's talk about this. Have you been in an airplane bathroom? Ok, now imagine shoehorning a shower in that. It's hard to dress in there without opening the door (to the kitchen, though you still have privacy because that can't be seen from the living/bedroom). Please believe me when I tell you it's probably the tiniest bathroom you've ever been in. A standard-sized adult male did live here for years and managed, but I want you to be prepared.

ʜᴀɴɢ ᴏᴜᴛ
A small balcony overlooks our courtyard (where you're also free to chill in the seating area). This is city living so you'll also see a parade of neighbor's back yards.

We have two dogs. You may hear them bark in the courtyard but we discourage extracurricular barking. Truffle is a senior Pomeranian and Cassius Thunderpaws (aka Cash) is Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd bundle of exuberant love.

Bringing your own puppers?
Yay! We're big fans of dog people and we'd love for you to bring your dog (that's just ONE, please). We may (possibly) be able to lend you a crate and will provide a doggie welcome kit.
BUT: we do require that you check with me *before* booking and tell me about your dog (don't worry, NO size limit or breed restriction!). I'll send you our special house rules for pups and ask you to agree before proceeding with booking. Please note - until you've asked and agreed to the rules, don't use instant book or we can decline the bookings.

This old stable was built in 1887 and later converted to a garage with this flat above it.At one time it was a woodworker's shop (and honestly, in 133 years who knows what else?) We worked really (really!) hard on renovating the space but it's not perfect, and that's not what we're after. We love the character of quirky old spaces and if you do too, we'll get along just fine.

This flat is above our garage, so guess what that means? Yep, we may open the garage door below during your stay. Between that and old windows overlooking a fairly busy street, light sleepers and night shift folks may prefer something in a quieter area. We've slept here quite a bit and been fine, but if you're used to a quiet country area you'll notice the city soundscape.

Also, the whole 'On the Alley' name? Yeah. It's on an alley. Know your comfort level with watching daily urban life unfold outside your window before booking. Next door is an auto body garage; they're great neighbors, but the cinderblock building isn't really part of the attraction here. I suggest looking out the other windows at the gorgeous 1860s church across the street.

We don't have a ton of rules but we mean business on all of them. This is our home and we've worked incredibly hard on it and ask that you respect it, as well as the neighborhood that supported us when we got our rental license.

There's no smoking (of anything) in Little Carriage House *or* on the balcony – anywhere on the property, for that matter. We are so very strict on that! Smoking = leaving.

Registered guests only, and we mean that too. You've been vetted by Airbnb and I'm sure your friends are lovely, but I don't know them, and this is our home, not a place for you to host a gathering. Do note we have a Nest cam that will capture all comings and goings on the property.

If you're traveling with a dog we require that you contact us to ask for and agree to the pet rules *before* booking.

You'll find we're very chill so long as you observe these house rules.

We have the conditional use permit and license required from Louisville Metro. We're also the OG Airbnb, as in this is our home, not a place run by an absent owner or management company. If you need anything, I'll pop out my back door and be there in one minute to help.

Guest access
You get the whole apartment to yourself and are welcome to make use of the enclosed courtyard shared with us and our other Airbnb, Vertigo Louisville. Registered guests only in all spaces.

Other things to note
-Take note you have to climb an exterior set of stairs to reach Little Carriage House.
-Air conditioning is of the window unit variety.
-Have I mentioned this is an urban, mainly residential, diverse neighborhood home to folks who run a wide spectrum of resources?
-Please read the section above about the whole 'On the Alley' name.

Location

Louisville, Kentucky, United States

We're in Old Louisville, in a historic, urban, primarily residential neighborhood called Limerick that's walking distance to downtown (20-30 minutes, depending on where you're headed). The amazing St. James Court, and Central Park (free summer Shakespeare shows!) are a short walk away. This is the largest concentration of Victorian homes in the country, and is a historic preservation district. Basically, you can walk around and just ogle mansions to your heart's content.

You're minutes by car from Louisville's amazing restaurants and bars, in the heart of a diverse residential area that's beginning to transform into a destination in its own right. [NOTE: during the pandemic restaurants are only available for pick-up or delivery)

Here's a look at what we've got nearby (15 minutes or less on foot)
...A great family-owned small craft beer brewery at dog-friendly and laid back Old Louisville Brewery

...Crazy good doughnuts and excellent local coffee at the awesome North Lime shop (first breakfast there is free on us!:)

...The fabulous Bar Vetti with cocktails and sumptuous Italian fare that the local restaurant critic calls Louisville's best food.

...Six Ten Magnolia, the flagship restaurant from James Beard award winning Edward Lee (who you may have seen on Mind of a Chef or in the New York Times). It's one of Food & Wine's Top Forty Restaurants so book ahead!

...And then all sorts of cool little nooks and crannies I can't wait to tell you about. Old Louisville isn't on the radar of many travel writers so you can really stumble across some cool off the beaten track places -- with the right guide ;)

I'm a freelance writer, mostly writing about food & travel, bourbon, home & design, and dogs -- basically all the best things -- and one of Airbnb's longest tenured superhosts. My husband and I call a rambling 1887 Victorian in Old Louisville home when we're not out traveling ourselves. We welcome wanderlusters to our third floor flat Vertigo Louisville and our boho Little Carriage House on the Alley. We live with our two very friendly pups, Cassius "Cash" Thunderpaws, an exuberant big dog, and Truffle, our elder little fluffball. Our favorite thing (besides traveling and renovation:) is helping travelers make the most of their stay in Louisville. Our Airbnbs and home have been featured in Apartment Therapy, USA Today, and Lonely Planet and our guests are often kind enough to say they're the best Airbnbs they've ever experienced! :)

We live in the main house across the courtyard and are a quick text away for important questions like “where should I eat/drink/explore?”

As wanderers ourselves we love meeting fellow travelers, but no worries if you'd rather keep to yourselves; you never even have to meet us if that's not your thing.
