Definitely one of the more unique experiences during our three-month visit to Sri Lanka. We experienced a very successful safari into Wilpattu West and a wonderfully enjoyable boat trip on the Puttalam Lagoon and up the Kala Oya River. Evening dips in the local river with Sereno and other guests became a highly anticipated event. Sereno and Kumari's hospitality was overwhelming! Would definitely recommend this to others looking for an extremely interesting, enlightening and extraordinary experience in a very out of the way location!

I loved staying at Wilpattu House - my motorbike broke down not far from there after leaving - and I was going to take it as a sign that I should stay longer. Great hospitality shown on such a busy weekend. The food served was absolutely fantastic and the trips through the village and to swimming spots made for a lovely space to chill out.

If you like nature and being amongst it, this is an amazing place to visit. Our hosts, Sereno and Kumari, were wonderful. Sereno knows a great deal about Sri Lanka. He was interesting to learn from and so helpful for the rest of our trip. He also took us swimming in the river which was an experience that is one of a kind! Kumari made some of the best food we ate in Sri Lanka and was always offering a cup of tea. She came with us on Safari and made sure we were well fed. She had a great eye for spotting animals and knew some interesting information about them too. If you want to be immersed in nature and Sri Lankan culture then you should stay here!

We stayed just for two nights at Serenos place, but we really enjoyed it!! After arrival we got tea and a snack:) his women showed us the place in town, where we could buy water for the following days. In the evening we got a great dinner and we tried to eat just with the right hand. It was quiet funny!!! Thanks also for organizing our full day safari in the national park:)we can just recommend this accommodation!!!:)

Put aside your general accommodation base level requirements, stay a few days and embrace the special unique nature of this property and area. We arrived from Kalpitya area and came by boat from our 'upmarket resort' over the lagoon and the Owner met us for a tuk tuk transfer. We stayed in their separate barn type bungalow with WC and shower. This is at the top of the property near the entrance and larger room with 3 beds. There are 2 other smaller double rooms next to each other with WC/Showers in another barn type property located slightly further into the Coconut Grove. There are basic fans on a stand which were better than any of the more upmarket places we have stayed and cooled us well and kept insects away. The Breakfast and evening meals were absolutely wonderful, great selection of curries and eating under the owners Tamarind tree at night. Bring beer/wine/water/juice and they will put it in the fridge. The picnic lunches were also fantastic, but make sure you ask for vegetable and remind Kumari NO egg or meat if you have to take it with you for a few hours before eating. Kumari arranged a safari - great - and also the next day a lagoon trip and swim ... amazing!! She also arranged an onward transfer to Anuradhapura. Prices were correct and not inflated. You must explore their grounds and walk to their swim area - every day, morning and evening, We've travelled alot, but swimming here with the eagles, kingfishers, egrets, monkeys all around is one of the most beautiful, peaceful and best things we have ever done. Sleeping at night with the sounds of nature and the occasional crackers set off in the village to keep elephants away was something to be embraced and remembered for ever. So now to the reality check. This is not for everyone and for you to arrive and be disappointed would sadden the owners. Its BASIC - no frills and its 'clean enough'. This is rural Sri Lanka and we are lucky to have the opportunity to stay somewhere authentic. Using too much water, washing machines etc and putting bleach etc down drains is no good for the environment or anyone. We bought our own Towels ( none provided) mosquito nets and silk sleeping bag liners - we didn't need the liners as the bedding was clean. If we had some duct tape and needle/cotton we could have repaired the existing mosquito nets which are provided and which really did have some holes - but as we had bought our own it wasn't an issue. The rooms really would benefit greatly if they had a couple of coats of paint - perhaps a light sand colour, and brighter lighting as the current colours are unfortunately unwelcoming to some especially if you arrive tired , which you will!!. This would transform them - an inexpensive way to really enhance the tourists experience in such a positive way -...
