Room in E Austin Home near Downtown

House - Private room · E 8th St, Austin, TX 78702, United States

The Space

The house is comfortable and homey. In your room, there is a queen-sized bed, storage areas and ceiling fan! (we also have a fabulous inflatable mattress if you need it.)

You'll have access to a bathroom in the hall and can also use the kitchen, washer and dryer, WiFi, TV with DVD player, Wii and Apple TV (with Netflix and Hulu Plus). The room has a door out to the big backyard and deck - a perfect place for your morning coffee (we'll make you a latte!).

The Neighborhood

We are located in chill, fun East Austin, about 1.5 miles from downtown and close to a lot of fun bars (Frontier, the Liberty, White Horse Saloon, the E 6th street bars), restaurants (Gourmands, Blue Dahlia, El Zunzal, Takoba, El Azteca) and SXSW venues.

Our house is about a ten minute bike ride from downtown, and all the wondrous sights there! We're two miles east of the Austin Convention Center, (about a 40 minute walk). We are also quite close to number 4 bus line, which takes you straight downtown, and can drop you just a few blocks north of the convention center.

Other Things to Note

Our 7 year old son is with us half the time, so there's a chance there'll be an adorable blondie running around. We also have two sweet indoor/outdoor cats that you may see roaming the house and snuggling in your bed - they're quite friendly!

Note: during SXSW we also rent out the living room, so there may be a few other folks visiting.

  • I really enjoyed my stay in this lovely home. Luke and Rachel are wonderful hosts, very considerate, welcoming and friendly. Left me with a fantastic view of Austin hospitality.

  • They were more than accommodating and super nice! Even though they have cats, you would never know! Easy find and close to Austin sights. I was super awesome and left my toothbrush home and they had a lil basket with supplies. Life saver! Thanks so much!

  • We arrived to find a lovely couple in a charming home. The guest room was very clean and well-appointed. We enjoyed the excellent collection of books and art throughout the house. We were grateful for their hospitality and flexibility. Thanks!

  • Luke and Rachel were wonderful hosts! They gave us great suggestions, and even invited us to spend some time with them and their friends. We had the privilege of experiencing Austin from a great launching base, and we have Luke and Rachel to thank for that. We'd stay again in a heartbeat!

  • Luke & Rachel were wonderful and accomodating hosts with a beautiful home. They even welcomed us with a cute note next to some Texas Lone Star beers! We also received folders with recommendations on where to go and things to do which was really helpful. We had a great time chatting when they were home. The best part is how close the home was to the fun parts of Austin like downtown, 6th street, South Congress, and the airport. The only thing is that they have some really friendly cats that go in and out of the guest bed room (but there is a cat door you can close) and will occasionally jump in bed to cuddle next to you. I'd recommend bringing some Claritin or allergy medicine in case your allergies start kicking in.

  • Luke and Rachel were wonderful hosts and accommodated our late arrival. They let us use their bikes to travel the city which made our visit even more fun. The neighborhood was close to some great places for food, but required some walking through neighborhoods best done during day time. Most places were within a mile and half walk, or a quick drive by car.

  • Luke and Rachel were extremely welcoming and had a list of recommendations waiting for us when we arrived! I am not normally a cat person, but their two cats converted me. We enjoyed chatting with Luke and Rachel about our day over beers and pizza as well, they are amazing people who we hope to stay in touch with. If you are ever in Austin and need a place to stay that epitomizes the character and welcoming nature of the city- look no further than Luke & Rachel's!

  • I would recommend staying with Luke and Rachel to anyone travelling to Austin.

Both of them are lovely, friendly people and are a great source of knowledge regarding things to do and see in Austin. The house is really inviting and I felt comfortable the moment I walked in the door.

Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay!

Luke is a professional activist, a sometime actor, and a novice gardener. Rachel is a social worker in a children's hospital, a fabulous baker, and a shower-singer. Although our feet often feel itchy and we want nothing more than to escape across the world, we love this town (especially all the magical swimming holes in the Texas Hill Country). Austin is the most wonderful place - you should come! Luke was an army brat and has been fortunate to live in a lot of cool places - Germany, Kenya, England, Alabama (he swears it's actually a pretty great place). His parents have lived in Mexico for 14 years and we try to visit often and explore different parts of the country (Luke once had a wild encounter with Zapatistas in Chiapas). Rachel grew up in Dallas, but got to Austin as soon as she could. She spent time in Sydney while finishing her master's degree, and is desperate to get back to the water as quick as she can. We are both interested in politics and working for social change. We love to listen to NPR, read the newspaper and then talk about (and occasionally do something about) what's happening in the world. Luke's 7 year old son lives with us half the time and we're having grand adventures. Luckily, he's quite outgoing - loves meeting new people and trying new things. The "Guess Which Country This Food Is From" game is one of his favorites. (And! a little irrelevant, but we're getting married in November! Yay!)
