The space

The cottage consists of an open plan living, dining and kitchenette area with a double sleeping mezzanine above.
There is a small bathroom with an electric shower.
The kitchenette contains an electric hob, microwave oven and small fridge.
Guests have access to a washing machine in an adjacent outbuilding.
The space is heated by a wood-burning stove with fuel provided.
The guest cottage has a private garden, seating area and barbeque to the rear.
As the byre was originally part of a small farm, our own traditional cottage sits on the same site.

If Gleann Leithin Cottage is unavailable for the dates you are interested in, please check out our other listing.
The Hide is a cosy, handcrafted cabin nestled on a slope at the opposite end of our house from the cottage.

Guest access

Glenleighan Cottage shares the site with our own house but guests have use of their own private garden at the rear.
There is access to a washing machine and dryer in an adjacent outhouse.

Interaction with guests

On arrival we will welcome you ourselves.
On the rare occasion that we will not be available to greet you, we will arrange for someone else to be there.
As we live close by, we will be on hand to help with any queries you may have but we aim to ensure that you have privacy while staying with us.
We will be happy to help with arranging tours and providing information on the many varied local activities.

The neighborhood

We are centrally located in a beautiful part of Donegal, close to most of its attractions.
The cottage is nestled in a valley 3km from the scenic village of Fintown.
The river Finn is known widely for its salmon and trout fishing and permits are available locally for fly-fishing.
In Fintown village, you will find the only operational narrow gauge railway in Donegal. It runs for
5 km beside Lough Finn, which is overlooked by Aghla and Scraig mountains.
The local village has a shop, pubs, church, school, health centre and library.

The towns of Glenties, Dungloe, Ballybofey and Letterkenny are 15 minutes, 15 minutes, 25 minutes and 30 minutes drives respectively. There you will find restaurants, pubs and supermarkets.

There are many stunning beaches within a 30 minute drive, offering beautiful walks and a choice of sports such as kayaking, surfing, golf and horse-riding, all of which we can help you to organise.

Getting around

If you choose to explore the county, by car is the easiest way to do so.

However the following bus companies operate services to and within Donegal

John McGinley Coaches
McGeehan Coaches
Bus Eireann
Feda O'Donnell

If you arrive in Letterkenny by bus, McGeehan Coaches operate a service to Fintown village and we can pick you up from there.
Alternatively Doherty Coaches run a bus in the afternoon from Letterkenny which passes by the end of our short lane. This leaves a 3 minute walk to our cottage.

Donegal airport (40 minutes) is served by Aer Arann (Aer Lingus) with flights to and from Dublin and Prestwick.
We are 70 minutes drive from Derry airport also.

Other things to note

While a car is a great way to see the county, if you visit without one and enjoy hiking or cycling, there is much exploring that you can do from our doorstep. We can provide bikes and maps of the locality to get you started.

We live in a Gaeltacht area rich in traditional Irish culture such as language, music and the arts. There is a wide choice of traditional music available in local pubs
Donegal also has a wealth of festivals throughout the year such as the Errigal Arts Festival, attracting many renowned Irish and International artists to the area.

If you would like to bring an element of pampering into your holiday we have a trained Neuromuscular Therapist who can pay a house call to the cottage and provide treatment for a specific injury or a general massage.
We can also recommend a visit to The Maghery Bay Salon to enjoy a seaweed bath overlooking the
beautiful Maghery beach. This is less than a 30 minute drive from us.

Taking a 15 minute drive from our house will connect you with The Wild Atlantic Way coastal drive.

This place is one of the most tranquil and idylic places we have ever been to. We can totally recommend Pete and Anna's cottage to anyone who is looking for some time off. Pete also offered some helpful advice and made our stay super comfortable.

It was great to spend two days in this lovely cottage in the deep Ireland. Maybe the best part of it was to be completely disconnected from the city. Pete was really nice with us and a helpful host. Beautiful landscape surrounds the property. Definitely highly recommended.

Pete and Anna's cottage is the epitome of cozy. All of the details are perfect and we had such a lovely time enjoying the beautiful surroundings, both indoors and out. Couldn't have been better!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful two-night stay at Pete and Anna's cottage. Although we weren't able to let them know exactly when we were arriving due to having no internet connection or phone reception in the area, check in was very easy and they had started the wood-burning stove for us so that the cottage was very warm and cosy when we arrived. The views from the cottage were absolutely stunning and the area was so peaceful - a lovely escape from the city! We had everything we needed in the cottage and it was beautifully decorated. Their lovely black cat came to visit us each evening which was a nice surprise. Although there was no wifi in the cottage it was possible to get wifi in the garden outside their house. There are so many things to do in Donegal that we were spoilt for choice - the Slieve league cliffs were impressive and I really enjoyed driving along the Wild Atlantic Way up to Malin head which was stunning. All in all, it was a perfect airbnb experience and we would definitely visit again to explore more of Donegal.

Perfect little cottage in a spectacular location. The only downside was that we didn't stay longer. Pete and Anna were superb hosts and we can't wait to go back there for a longer visit.

Pete and Anna's idyllic cottage is a place of pure bliss. A place in which you can recharge and take in the general splendor of Donegal. The cottage is rustic and oh-so romantic. My husband (German) and I (American) stayed for two days, which was entirely too short of a stay! The cottage is remote, but that is part of the charm. We took walks in the surrounding hills, and did some joy-riding along the coast during the day. In the evenings we sat in front of the wood-burning stove reading books and listening to various selections from Pete and Anna's CD collection. (A great variety of local and national artists!) At night, if the skies are clear, be sure to step outside and take in the starry sky! For food and such, we shopped at the grocery store in Glenties (approx. a 30 drive away) and cooked our meals at the cottage. Pete and Anna were always on hand to answer questions and/or offer tips about the area. I indulged in a bit of pampering and made an appointment with the massage therapist. Not only is she really talented, but she's an incredible source of information on Donegal and it's history. If you're considering booking an appointment with her - do it! Two small tid-bits about the cottage: a) the bed is very comfortable, and b) the cottage smells really good. Pete and Anna use some kind of oil-infuser that is an absolute delight to the olfactory receptors. Staying at Pete and Anna's cottage is truly a full-immersion experience. We can hardly wait to return for another stay, and recover the part of hearts that we left in Donegal.

Pete And Anna User ProfilePete And Anna is a superhost.

We moved to Donegal twelve years ago and converted our traditional byre and stone cottage where we now happily live with our two young children.
In 2016 Pete completed our second little rental, The Hide, meaning we can be more self sufficient, working more from home while meeting all the lovely people who visit us.
We look forward to welcoming you to one of the most beautiful, unspoiled parts of Ireland!
