Phumula, meaning “to come and rest”, is a cozy wooden cabin nestled on our mango farm outside Motobu Town. Ideally tucked away from tourist crowds, it offers a peaceful retreat where you can truly unwind. On clear nights, the starlit sky is simply breath taking. Guests are welcome to enjoy the campfire area, ideal for quiet evenings under the stars. Whether you’re looking to relax, recharge or escape the hustle of daily life, Phumula offers the perfect setting to rest and reconnect with nature.

We only have fruit for sale in July and August. However the mangoes are in great demand and usually pre booked and ordered by end of June. Mango farming in Okinawa is unlike anything else in the world and is a really fascinating, intricate style of farming where attention to detail and perfection is essential in order to produce top market mangoes perfect for the Japanese market. We love to share our story so please ask us anytime!
There’s the Yaedake bakery up the hill. (or a 40 minute walk UP HILL!) Closed on Saturdays. Open from 9-5pm any other day of the week. Healthy bread only sold there. Free from eggs and dairy and they use only Japanese grown wheat.
Stunning walk up to a magnificent view point from the bakery parking lot. Details are in the cottage guide book.
Beautiful sunset locations with stunning views over the East China Sea, Ie Island, Izena and Iheya Island. It’s up the hill behind our house - a short 10 minute drive.
We have a large white dog called Franki. He loves to meet new guests but barks a lot at first…

If you are self catering then it might help if you shop before coming! This place is truly special and very refreshing if you have time to sit outside and chill around a fire or BBQ. At night there are owls calling to each other, You can see shooting stars on clear nights , fire fliesosrly in May or June , and lots of insect noises from the bush. Kids can be outside and there are no cars driving around so it’s safe and comfortable for families.
We also have a veg garden from November to April so feel free to help out, pick what you need or get your hands dirty in the garden!
Other things to note
We live in the mountains and jungle area of Motobu, so insects are naturally present in the environment.
There are insect screens on the windows, but sometimes insects may still get inside.
Please understand this and cooperate with nature during your stay.
We provide mosquito coils for outdoor use and mosquito mats for indoor use at night, in case any insects enter the cottage (which is not very common).
Surprisingly, we do not have a severe mosquito problem compared to some beach areas in the north.
There is a short “mosquito time” around dusk, but that’s usually all.
If there is a breeze, mosquitoes are rarely an issue.
From November to March, we hardly see any mosquitoes at all.
