Phumula Guest Cottage is a cozy, warm, wooden, everything you need, family friendly cabin, tucked away in the hills of Motobu. This place is ideally located to get away from touristy spots and offers peace and quiet. There are stunning mountain views and magnificent stars at night. One can enjoy a camp fire as an added bonus. It’s also safe for children to play safely outside. The cottage is studio style so it has no private bedrooms, and ideal for 2 people.

The space
-Large open spaces on the property ideal for children (and adults!) to run around on. We have a lot of open lawn and provide frisbee, bats, balls & badminton rackets. We pride ourselves in the fact that we are not a resort and want to create a space that makes guests feel like its their holiday home and away from touristy places.

- 2 single beds. 2 floor mats. Studio style so the cotage is open plan. 4 adults can stay here but it is a tight squeeze. Highly recommended for 2 adults and if you have small children then you will fit comfortably.

- CAMP FIRE. We provide firewood and fire starters for 1000 yen per camp fire. If you need help lighting a fire please let us know. Also please be aware of avoiding having a fire on really windy days due to the danger of fires spreading.

- FREE BBQ to use. (You can purchase charcoal for a BBQ after you arrive from us. It`s 500円 for small box of charcoal)
-Outside table and chairs in the garden.

- Free coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, drinking water, cooking oil, soya sauce, salt, pepper.

- Option of pre ordering food for a bbq so no preparation is necessary. Please ask for this service at least a day before check in.

- Mango Farm tours available on request depending on what is happening on the farm at the time and of course the weather. (Just ask us at check in or prior to your arrival.) We only have fruit for sale in July and August. However the mangoes are in great demand and usually pre booked and ordered by end of June. Mango farming in Okinawa is unlike anything else in the world and is a really fascinating, intricate style of farming where attention to detail and perfection is essential in order to produce top market mangoes perfect for the Japanese market. We love to share our story so please ask us anytime!

Secrete sunset locations with stunning views over the East China Sea, Ie Island, Izena and Iheya Island. We will let you know once we are here to keep it our secret!

If you are wanting a truly relaxing and invigorating experience, then you can book the sea water hot towel treatment option. The therapist can only come if her schedule is open so it is best to pre-book. Each treatment takes about 50 minutes and is done in the cottage on a portable bed which the therapist brings in. For more information please ask us in a message.

Where you’ll be

Motobu, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan

The cherry blossoms are famous here on Yae Mountain as they are the first to blossom in Japan. Izumi which is where we live in Motobu Town is well known for quaint and unique cafes, stunning view points from Yaedake Mountain Top, a family friendly park with beautiful views, toilets and plenty of space for good walks and cycles.

Izumi is also perfectly located between Nago City and Motobu Town so is not too far off the beaten track! In 20 minutes or less by car you can access Ocean Expo Park and Churaumi Aqaurium, beautiful beaches, convenience shops, hospitals, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, Dinosaur Park, Nakijin Castle Ruins, Kouri Island, Sesoko Island, Motobu Port and so much more. We can recommend some of our favorites to you if you are interested for more information.

I Kirsten am originally from South Africa and my husband, Shiro is from Okinawa. We’ve been living and farming mangoes here on the property since 2008. We love living in the hills rather than near the sea but the joy of living up north in Okinawa is that we have quick access to many beautiful beaches so get there often. My husband and I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and like to see people relaxing and enjoying themselves with friends and or family. Our place is unique to Okinawa in that we have plenty of space for kids to run around in, space to be away from lots of people, space to chill and breath, and space to enjoy campfires and bbqs. We would love to share this with you and look forward to meeting you.

During your stay

We live on the property about 150m away from the cottage so someone is almost always around so feel free to ask questions or get to know us! We speak both English and Japanese. There is a main house next to your cottage where “Grandpa” / Ojichan lives! He likes to meet people but only speaks Japanese!!! My husband and I are both very familiar with this northern part of Okinawa so please don't hesitate to ask us for recommendations. We do have young children so know what is good for families but we have also have lived here without children for a long time so did a lot of stuff ideal for couples and a lot more outdoor adventures like hiking trails, kayaking and cycling. Please ask us if you want some ideas!
