About this listing
An Smachtlann (built 1798) is one of the oldest houses in Kenmare and was restored by us in 2013. You'll have sole use of our stone built guest cottage which is cute and cosy and just 1 minute walk from the best restaurants in town.
The double room is simply furnished and has a large chest of drawers for your use. It has a large velux window with blackout blinds
Our house is a beautiful example of Irish Georgian architecture and has been shortlisted for an award this year for the renovation we have completed. You will be staying in the stone cottage at the back of the house where you have your own little galley kitchen, living room and shower room. Upstairs there is a double room and a good size single room which can have 2 singles at a squeeze if you need them. You have a private front door and can come and go as you like.
The main house is generally private. You have free use of the private garden area for eating/ drinks outside.
Interaction with Guests
Someone will be there to show you around and can send you on information about Kenmare and the house. Most of the time my mother in law will be resident who is very hospitable and knows a lot of things about the area. We leave tea, coffee and milk in the fridge as well as some basic breakfast goods.
The people, the food and the environment are all very special in Kenmare. There are loads of things to visit within a short drive or you can just wander around town. Reenagross park is just across the road, the pier is 5 minutes walk away, the market also 5 minutes walk and some amazing places to eat can be found just out of the back door!
Car park is just opposite or along the street and is free.
Other Things to Note
The cottage kitchen which has a dishwasher, hob, fridge and oven. You are welcome to cook if you would like but there is limited preparation space. Currently our WIFI signal is not strong enough to reach the cottage.
No smoking inside please. And sorry but no hen/stag parties!
Kirstin's cottage was absolutely perfect. It's right in the village of Kenmare; the Main Street is literally steps away. Kenmare is a pretty village with great pubs and restaurants. Kirstin's manual was fantastic. I needed a doctor and she provided all the information I needed. This is a great place to stay if you want to explore the area. We were met by Julia who was very welcoming.
Julia, in Kirsten's absence gave us the warmest of welcomes. Loved Kenmare and its genuine, friendly people. The whole experience surpassed all our expectations!
On arrival we had a warm and friendly welcome from Trudy and Helen in Cleo's shop. The bijou cottage is a little gem located right off the main street yet couldn't be more quiet. We'll definitely be back when staying in kenmare if Kirstin accepts us back.
What a great little find in Kenmare. It was a gorgeous little house close to everything in Kenmare and easy access to the ring of Kerry. We were met by the lovely Trudi who was full of local knowledge and history she even found us a bigger coffee plunger and ice! It had everything you may need for a great stay
Sadly, we did not rate this accommodation.
the host was excellent in sending helpful notes prior to arrival, but the accommodation was deceptively small.
Very dark with only light coming from two small windows. no where to hang your clothes, no microwave, no ice/freezer, no wifi, tv not working - we are good with technology. Tiny accommodation , hardly enough room for 2 never mind 4.
this was very disappointing and very overpriced for what you got. Would definitely not recommend this. We have stayed in many places and by far this was not good, sadly, but it could be made so much better. the photos are misleading and make the place look much better than it is. Not for us i am afraid - sorry.
I'm sorry you found the cottage too small. It is actually converted from 2 former cottages which would have had a large family in each so I think 2 people should be able to manage in it! The fact that it is over 200 years old and has the highest preservation order on property in Ireland limits what we can do with both the interior and the exterior - we can't make the windows larger... I do try and show in the pictures that the kitchen is a galley and state the equipment we have available and I do also list that there is no wifi.
Wonderful host and location!!!
Kenmare is a unique gem. Highly recommend this cozy house.
From our first request to Kirstin to stay in her Kenmare Cottage, we had a very good email relationship, chatting about both our holidays.
Kirstin was away when we arrived so her Friend and Collegue Julia was there to welcome us. We had a tour of the cottage and were welcomed with breakfast cereals, milk, tea and coffee. I had requested an ironing and ironing board which was there for me and a pretty peg bag for hanging washing on the out door line , these were a thoughtful touch.
The cottage was stunning, very cute, immaculately clean and beautifully presented. Everything advertised was provided. Although fore warned the internet connection could be sketchy, we had no problem, just found connection was better upstairs.
Parking was very convenient, just across the road and was much appreciated in such a busy wee village.
We loved Kenmare. A bustling village with tourists, market stalls, great souvenir shops and shopping in general and loads of cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from. We spent a great day walking the village and surrounding areas of historic interest.
We felt very safe in the cottage with the backyard having a locked gate.
