Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

Interaction with Guests
We reside in Texas when not on the Big Island, so our primary interaction with guests is via phone or email. Our housekeeper serves as our on-island contact when we cannot be reached or for emergencies, per State of Hawaii law. We do everything to minimize intruding on guests privacy, but we stress that we are always available to assist with questions or problems.
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
The Hele-on bus system does serve the Volcano area; however, a rental car will likely be your best method of transportation. Bicycle rental services are available in Hilo-town if you are interested in renting a bike to get around town and visiting the park.
Other Things to Note
Volcano is situated at 4000 ft elevation in Ohi'a and hapu'u rain forest. This means that the climate is not quite what most people expect when they envisage Hawai'i. It is cooler in Volcano (upper 70's in daytime to 50's in evenings), so bring some cooler weather clothes so that you don't miss out seeing the volcano at night. Also, bring a jacket or rain poncho so that you do not miss out on activities because of a random shower.
Detailed house rules are provided in our rental agreement. As a quick summary: smoking not allowed, pets only permitted with owner approval and additional deposit, no parties, respect our home, our quiet neighborhood, and the 'aina (land).
