Where you’ll be

Vélez-Blanco, Andalucía, Spain

From the Association, we offer our guests information to discover the treasures of Velez Blanco. Anyone who visits this white community can feel the essence and magic that has made it the most charming village in Andalusia in 2017. This charm is due to its rich historical, cultural and natural heritage.

Vélez Blanco is known as the oasis of Almeria, and it is really surprising to find this place so full of life surrounded by desert, and it has life because it has water, one of its most valuable resources. That's why we can't help but recommend three routes:

• La Ruta del Agua Walking through the narrow streets of Vélez Blanco you can enjoy the beautiful architecture, freshness and peace that you can breathe in this mountain village and you will discover the different pipes, fountains and ravines that have been maintained since the Muslim era, among them there are whims such as the Caños de la Novia, the Caños de Caravaca, the Cinco Caños, the Canastera ravine, the La Lavadero, etc.

• La Ruta Histórico Cultural Combined with the previous one, you can approach this route and learn about the historical and cultural heritage of the Sierra María de Los Vélez Natural Park. We must emphasize that this has been a home and a testament to the passage of different communities, cultures, settlements and ways of life since the Paleolithic and Neolithic era. We found clear examples of this in the many caves that line this park. The best-known and visited are: the “Cueva de Ambrosio”, the “Cueva del Gabar”, the “Cerro de las Canteras” and the “Cueva de los Signeros”, the latter being famous for cave paintings such as Brujo and Indalo, an anthropomorphic figure that has become the quintessential Almeria symbol.

Perhaps one of the most popular and representative monuments of this region is the Castle of Velez Blanco, a 16th-century fortress, declared "Property of Cultural Interest and Historical-Artistic Heritage" for its architecture and beauty in harmony with its natural environment.

In addition, this village is also characterized by preserving the urban structure of the Muslim era almost intact, highlighting the Barrio de la Moreria and the aforementioned fountains and pipes.

• Peaks and Biodiversity Trail Another of the greatest treasures of this region is the Natural Park of Sierra María de los Vélez characterized by its rich biodiversity of fauna and flora. There is a wide range of nature trails that can be done in this park. We recommend the climbs to the two most special peaks in the area: the imposing Muela de Montalviche (1554m) and the outstanding Mahimón Mountain (1683m). Not only can we contemplate its beauty from La Casa Viva, but we can discover its life and its energy from the top.

Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park is a great area to enjoy nature and gastronomy. Also for hiking, climbing, biking and mountain biking trails, as well as bird watching.
