anta Fe’s official nickname, “The City Different,” is more than just a slogan dreamed up by local boosters.
The city is a fascinating blend of Native America, Old Spain and the Wild West. Don’t let its centuries-old buildings and courtly charm fool you: the 21st century is alive and well here.

A Big Little City
Many people would love the convenience and more human pace of small-town living if only they didn’t have to give up their big-city amenities. Unique among small cities, Santa Fe combines many of the benefits of rural life and the sense of wide-open spaces with access to intellectual and cultural offerings normally associated with larger cities.

Concerts, lectures, readings, panel discussions and more are popular among the local communities of writers, artists, scientists and academics, providing an ongoing, collective conversation that’s fully engaged with the world despite Santa Fe’s relative remoteness.

Culture, Culture Everywhere
Santa Fe is the second-largest art market in the country after New York. It has long been known as a source of exceptional Western and regional art, as well as Native American fine-art crafts and Hispanic religious folk art.

What’s less known is that Santa Fe has emerged as a serious player in the world of contemporary art, with numerous galleries selling cutting-edge work and more than a handful of renowned contemporary artists living in and around Santa Fe.

SITE Santa Fe, a nonprofit contemporary arts organization, mounts an international biennial exhibition in even-numbered years that brings in the latest and greatest works from around the world. ART Santa Fe is an annual boutique art fair showcasing international works from the world’s top galleries. The SOFA (Sculptural and Functional Art) show, of New York and Chicago fame, has added SOFA West-Santa Fe to its offerings, a more intimate gathering of elite artists and galleries.

Santa Fe Opera
Housed in an architecturally stunning amphitheater surrounded by panoramic vistas, the Santa Fe Opera shares its summer offerings with opera-lovers from all over the world.

Santa Fe Institute
A scientific think tank co-founded by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann, a revolving roster of renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines uses computer modeling to examine key questions of human existence.

South Capitol Santa Fe and the Don Gaspar Historical District is one of the most sought after areas to live in Santa Fe. Its is central to the Capitol, The Plaza, Canyon Road, and the Railyard where the farmers market is held each Saturday. It extends roughly south from the State Capitol, the northern boundary is Paseo de Peralta; the eastern boundary is the Old Santa Fe Trail; the southern boundary is Houghton Street, and the western boundary is Don Cubero. The district is primarily residential, and was largely built in the early 1900's. There are a few of the buildings, however, that date back to the late 1800's. The mix of architectural styles in this area are a result of the railroad coming to Santa Fe and bring eastern influence to the architecture. There are California Bungalow, late-period Victorian and Pueblo Revival homes here.

Greetings and Thanks for Reading! Our hope for everyone who stays at the Mod Seville is for a true retreat from the busy-ness of life. We enjoy the contrast of our contemporary home against the dusty western landscape as well as our historic city. We think of this juxtaposition as room to breathe amidst the history of Santa Fe. We have lived in Santa Fe for over 30 years. Joyce raised a family and worked as a visual artist, having shown all over the world. Whit worked in the mortgage business as well as hospitality. We married last year, here on our property, in September. We built the Mod Seville and delighted in appointing the new space. Joyce lent her eye to the interior, including midcentury modern pieces with playful accents. Old friends Steve and Allesandra fabricated tile and a beautiful custom walnut bed. The general contractor, Buffalo Builders, are good friends as well. A testament to the benefits of living in a warm, western, small town. Joyce's work developed dramatically over the last 15 years, having moved away from 2D work into 3D pieces incorporating beading, textiles and fiber. Whit has been a meditator and student of psychology for some time. When we completed the Mod Seville, we encountered the space one morning and immediately realized it's serenity. It has a signature of calm which opens one to relaxation. We hope you find the tranquility we do at the Mod Seville.
