Comfy bed for better sleep

The room-darkening shades and extra bedding are loved by guests.
Welcome to the Pumpkin House, a unique and historic home with a super cozy vintage vibe. Ideal for couples and groups of up to 5. The home has 3 bedrooms, 1 & 1/2 baths and built in 1872. Lovingly restored and completely furnished with a curated collection of treasures. Inside and out, its period design and colours transport you and your senses back in time. Here a stay here is more than just a stay, it's an experience in modern day time travel paired up with our warm and authentic hospitality.

The space
Comfort and coziness is what you can expect. HGTV called the Pumpkin House “One of the Coolest Canadian Airbnbs”; experience why for yourself! With a classic old fashioned layout, the three bedrooms are upstairs and all the living spaces are on the main floor. The living room, or as we call it “The Parlour” has comfy seating ideal for kicking back and putting your feet up. A collection of vintage books, games and movies are perfect for the rainy days.

The dining room is perfect for a marathon board game night (we supply the games) or enjoy hosting your own dinner party here with a meal you whipped up in the 50’s style kitchen. We stock the kitchen with spices and the essentials for cooking and baking…and plenty of fresh ground coffee for the French press, making for one of the best cups of coffee in town.

Outside, the wrap around patio allows you to chase (or hide from) the sunshine all day long. With classic wooden benches and ample seating. It’s perfect for bird watching or just relaxing and letting the worries of the world melt away. Depending on the weather, you’ll catch some of the most beautiful sunsets that take to the skies and have given Twillingate a reputation for its incredible sunsets.

The Pumpkin House sits beside an active working fishing harbour and colourful boat yard. Alive with Newfoundland’s fishing heritage. Watch the boats come and go with the tides, while the fishermen land their catch of cod. It is an authentic glimpse of the life and culture that has shaped our island for centuries.

To fully experience the magic of Twillingate combined with the your stay at the Pumpkin House, we (and our guests) recommend a stay of three nights. Discounted rates will automatically be applied to longer stays for more than three nights.

Guest access
The Pumpkin House and its rambling property including the root cellars are all yours to enjoy and explore during your stay!

Other things to note
For our guests taller than 6 feet, just a heads up that the lowest ceiling heights are 6'7". The Pumpkin House was built long before the days of the modern building code and retains much of its original 19th century architecture, quirks and quaintness. Although we might not have the spaces tailored for a stay with young children, we do our very best to have a space that is somewhat safe for them. We simply wish to share all of this so that you have the fullest picture.

Neighborhood highlights

The Pumpkin House is located on the South Island of Twillingate in the town Durrell, in the municipality of Twillingate.

Farmer's Arm Road is one of the gems of this town, where you can walk the street along the shoreline and feel like you've been transported to another time. Colourful houses, beaches, gardens and fences make this a photographer's dream come true. The neighbours you'll meet are lovely, one of them is a shipyard where you can watch the boats come and go.

Having a vehicle in Twillingate will make it easier to explore, as the town is quite spread out. While some spots like the general store, museum, and local winery are within walking distance, most attractions are best reached by car. Bike rentals are also an option for you to explore!

Famous for its reputation of being the 'Iceberg Capital of the World'. As early as April to June, these massive ice sculptures literally drift in and around Iceberg Alley. Interesting to note is that our waters are warming with the effects of climate change and the icebergs are now becoming unpredictable. When they are here though, you won't miss them!!

Twillingate has an impressive coastal hiking trail, very well maintained and known as the Rockcut Trails - something that you'll want to pack your hiking boots for. They feature over 25kms of trails which literally take you all around Twillingate's southern and northern islands. Here we love hiking and there's a trail for absolutely everyone's level.

Up harbour (5min drive) there are several chartered boat tours that offer you different types of on the water experiences. From a small boat tour with a local skipper to a large scale Zodiac boat, there's a boat for everyone. If a sunset kayak tour is something that interests you, there's an incredible kayak tour company (Rock Adventures) for you as well.

A short stroll up the street is the Auk Island Winery & Restaurant. They craft award winning Newfoundland berry wines and wines made with iceberg ice...with a family style restaurant and souvenir shop its a bonus! Here, most restaurants operate from mid May to the first of September, with a menu that should satisfy each and every taste bud.

Be sure to visit the Fish Market, the Artisan market, with picnic lunches and bike rentals available. We have three cafés and all are all within a short drive from the Pumpkin House. A few pubs & a dynamite brewery called Split Rock, serve a variety of local craft beers from Newfoundland. If you were looking for something fun to do with the gang, our local dinner theatres serves up a darn good meal and some good laughs.

There are also several museums and the Long Point Lighthouse to visit. Learn more about our Indigenous people (Beothuks), the Arm Lads Brigade a group of young men who fought to defend our country. You can learn much about the history of the wooden boat builders of Newfoundland and their crafts and get up close with a massive whale skeleton that really must be seen up close to appreciate their immense sense of scale.

Twillingate is about an hour and a half drive to the Fogo Island ferry...making it an enjoyable day trip to see the sights of Fogo island. If day trips are your thing, pack your beach bags and visit the white sandy beaches of Lumsden and New-Wes-Valley which are not far at all.

2 nights is not enough to see and do it all in here.
