A jewel box of a Fort house, with a courtyard at its heart, a flowery roof terrace overlooking the Indian ocean at its head and a walled garden as it’s back gate.

This 18th Century Dutch merchant's house is stylishly presented and with many of the original architectural features restored, Asian antiques and the owners passion for turquoise. The garden gate leads onto the Fort Ramparts , the lighthouse and beach below. The house is solar powered and not affected by power cuts.

The space
The house has a comfy airy sitting room open to the outdoors through 5 beautiful arches, overlooking the central courtyard pond. A well equipped kitchen is great for cooking - or to learn rice & curry cooking from Kanthi. The dining table over looks the leafy garden, and the roof terrace is perfect for sunbathing or a sunset aperitif. There are two main bedrooms with AC and mossie nets and their own bathrooms, though only one is en-suite. There is a further bedroom with a queen size bed as well a single bunk room. Both of which are available upon request.

Guests have exclusive access to the entire house, regardless of the number of rooms required.
A key to access the private entrance will be provided for guests to come and go as they please.

Other things to note

Where you’ll be

Galle, Southern Province, Sri Lanka

Galle Fort is a peninsula that juts our into the Indian Ocean and is surrounded by imposing granite stone ramparts. These were started by the Portuguese in 1588 and were completed over the following centuries by more invading colonial powers, the Dutch and then the English. The house was built in Dutch time and is on the south east corner of the ramparts underneath the lighthouse.

The history of the Fort is all around us, it is like living inside a museum, and for those who want to know more their are guided Fort tours, old churches and museums to visit. The best way to see the Fort in all its glory is to walk the ramparts in the early morning or at sunset.

The grid of lanes and streets of the Fort are lined with shops and boutiques, restaurants and hotels. There are wonderful places to snack and dine right on our doorstep. The Fort is famous for its jewellery shops and we can recommend some of the best and most trusted of our neighbours.

Galle is on the magical south east coast of Sri Lanka, where we are blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There is surfing within a 10 minute drive of Galle as well as the breaks at Ahangama, Midigama, Weligama and Mirissa to the south and Hikkaduwa to the north.

Inland from Galle the countryside is beautiful with swathes of rice paddies, low lying tea plantations, verdant jungles dotted with temples, white stupas enhancing the dark greens. The best way to see these are from a bicycle.
