Description

The space

Our hostel consists of 3 double and 2 single occupany rooms. All rooms are spacious with large windows, comfortable spring beds, and terrace access. The 3 double occupancy rooms have private bathrooms. The single room and one room with two twin beds share a bathroom.

Our shared living space has a small library and a piano, fully equipped kitchen, restroom, terrace, and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is included and comes with our homemade bread and marmalade.

Our family home is located next door to the hostel. We will make you breakfast each morning and happily answer any questions and assist you in booking activities.

We are located in a very safe neighborhood. There are only three neighbors living next to us, all of them as friendly and peaceful as everyone in this community.
We are situated in the heart of Monteverde. From here you can easily access any of the four big natural reserves where you can experience the unique flora and fauna of this area. We are happy to provide our guests information about the different kind of tours which take place in Monteverde. The range of activities is huge and includes tours of the forest reserves, Butterfly Garden, Reptile and Amphibian Exhibition, The Bat Jungle, organic farms, coffee and chocolate plantations, 4 km railway forest trip, or the Monteverde Cheese Factory. For adrenaline junkies there are extreme sports available such as canopy tours, suspension bridges, abseiling giant trees, or bungee-jumping.

Casa Alquimia Artes is easily accessed by car or public transport. Free private parking is available. If needed, we can provide you with public transportation schedules so you can coordinate your flight with transport to Monteverde.

The neighborhood

This is a beautiful, natural area with forests and expansive views of the valleys all the way down to the Gulf of Nicoya. It is a wonderful place to walk and people are very friendly and easy-going. There are several very good restaurants within five minutes (walking) and a small health food store also.

Getting around

There is an inexpensive bus that goes to the Monteverde Cloud Forest each morning. It is 2 minutes away to get it. Walking is the best and healthiest way to get around but taxis are also available and are inexpensive. We have free parking for guests who bring their own car.

Our traveling group, which included a few children, rented out the top floor of Tarsicio's house, which included at least 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms so there was plenty of space for all. The bedrooms/bathrooms were furnished in a simple and basic manner. Hot water was not an issue when taking a shower. We stayed in the largest bedroom in the corner with a huge king sized bed with another twin bed in the corner as well. The only nuisance was that one of the windows would not close so insects could flutter in and out. Inevitably, there were some moths that made their way in and flew around in the bedroom at night, which was sometimes unnerving, when they would dart onto one's head or bed sheets. The downstairs floor consisted of shared common space, which included a small living room area, with a piano, writing table, small TV, chairs and sofa; a very large dining table; a small working kitchen and room in the back, which contained washing machine (there is no dryer but you can hang your clothes outside on drying line or there's a drying line in the main bedroom upstairs as well). Wifi was excellent. As others have stated, one of the joys of staying at this place was the incredibly warm hospitality of Tarsicio and his sweet wife, Marianela. They cooked lovely breakfasts for us (toast, jams, fruits, eggs, coffee/teas, etc) and gave wonderful suggestions for sightseeing. Tarsicio connected us with a wonderful naturist guide for the Curi Cancha Widllife Refuge (an alternative to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve if you want less crowds and still see amazing wildlife), and we had fun and learned a lot on a coffee/chocolate tour and nighttime wildlife walk at Don Juan Coffee Farms (which Tarsicio booked for us). He also arranged transportation for one of our friends to get back to San Jose a day early. The house was a little tricky to find at first, but is is actually right off a main street that has multiple terrific restaurants just walking distance, such as Tramonti, Cafe Caburi and Stella's Bakery. There was also a co-op artisan gallery walking distance by the eateries, along with the Bat Jungle (kids loved it). The evening we left, we received a note from Tarsicio that we had left two items behind, and he quickly made arrangements to mail them back to us in San Jose, where we had someone who could pick them up for us. All in all, if you don't mind some simple and rustic surroundings, you will enjoy the natural beauty, peace and hospitality of what this couple's home has to offer!

This was a cute and welcoming Air B&B. Tarsicio was very flexible and provided a nice breakfast every morning we were there.

This place is magical, beautiful, rustic, and charming. We stayed at Alquimia when on a girls trip with 5 of us. It was great to have our own space and the home is so unique and beautiful. This is a home designed for, and by, artists. If you are looking for a cookie cutter stay, this isn't it, but if you are looking to be immersed in culture and have something entirely different than the typical resort stay, Alquimia might be a good fit. It was great to have the piano and guitar there to play. Tarsicio and Nela were so gracious. We had great conversation each morning about life, philosophy, art, music, and the world we live in. It was a great opportunity for me to practice my Spanish. Tarsicio was very patient but if you're skills are not great, like mine, download a good translator app before you go. Tarsicio helped us plan our tours and transportation and they are so kind. The house is located walking distance to a couple cafes, and a great artists coop where we were able to souvenir shop. When we wanted to get downtown where the restaurants and bars were located it was a 20 minute hike, or 5 minute taxi ride which cost about $5usd each way. We cannot wait to go back to Alquimia, we are so glad we found it.

Warm and friendly place! Communication with Tarsicio and Marianela was great, as we requested four rooms at their place on the day of arrival. Since the house is set up basically as a hostel, Tarsicio was able to set us up immediately. The house is a bit spartan, but has comfortable beds and a quiet atmosphere. It was great to meet other parties staying there and we made use of the guitar and piano for a songfest one evening. Breakfasts were bountiful and a highlight was the corn empanadas filled with cheese made by Marianela. The kitchen is open for you to use. Gracious hosts top off a wonderful stay.

The house was exactly as described! We had great communication with Tarsicio leading up to our check in and he greeted us at the house at the arranged time. We enjoyed getting to know him more at breakfast and it was a bonus that he was eager to help us make the most of our stay in Monteverde with assistance in booking excursions. Wifi signal was strong, and the view of sunset from the house is beautiful! The location was the only downfall, as it was a bit further from the main area of town. It is certainly walkable to get to town, but the restaurant area is too far to walk for dinner. As well, the wind can get quite loud at night but we made some ear plugs and that was helpful. The room we stayed in did not have a proper door, so we were exposed to the noise of the other tenants as well. I would have preferred a full door, but the french door type we had was quite beautiful. All in all, I give it a 4/5. Would recommend but a vehicle and some ear plugs would be encouraged.

Casa Alquimia Artes and the wonderfully kind and generous hosts Tarsicio and Marianela came highly recommended to me from the Reiki teacher in Monteverde. This is THE place to stay if you are doing the Reiki course down the street, as you will be there in about 3 minutes, which is perfect ! I felt very welcomed and at home straight away. A home away from home, which for me, is very comforting. The house is in a peaceful, quiet and safe location. This house really is a gem in the heart of Monteverde, as are the hosts Tarsicio and Marianela. Tarsicio is very warm and welcoming and full of helpful suggestions and ways to utilize the time in Monteverde and Costa Rica, catering to whichever budget a traveler may have. Tarsicio booked an amazing chocolate, coffee and night tour for me, which I highly recommend to anyone. You really will taste the best chocolate you have ever tasted in your life and having traveled through out various countries, I don't say this lightly ! Bonus also that the tour bus can pick you up right from the house and drop you back afterwards. I also asked Tarsicio to arrange an airport pick up for me from San Jose as I was arriving late afternoon. This was so convenient for me after a long haul flight, driver was kind, friendly and local and was waiting for me at the airport with a sign with my name on it. I highly recommend a stay at Casa Alquimia Artes to anyone that values a quiet, peaceful, relaxing space with super kind, friendly and warm hosts to welcome you. This is a great place from which to explore the beautiful green and lush surrounds of Monteverde. Tarsicio and Marianela also have a beautiful cat called Chavela who is simply adorable ! Pura Vida !
