Podere Montecucco is an old stone farmhouse which has been restored by Lois and Paul as their home. We have one room dedicated to B&B with a high, chestnut-beamed ceiling, a handmade 4-poster bed made up with Egyptian cotton sheets and lovely views over the garden. Surrounded by uncontaminated, often fallow fields and woodlands, a stay here is ideal for those who want to be in a rural location but within easy reach of Orvieto just 8kms distant and the clear waters of lake Bolsena 13kms away.

The space
Podere Montecucco was originally a farmhouse (casale) which had been abandoned for about 10 years until we found it and brought it back to life. It sits snugly on the side of a hill with a tufo bank behind it on which there is an olive grove and vineyard but otherwise we are in open countryside with pockets of woodland and Etruscan caves dotted around. We both worked on the restoration a lot ourselves and have re-utilised and restored as much as possible of the original materials found here such as the old chestnut beams. There are many good restaurants nearby (2 within staggering distance!) and excellent vineyards for wine-tastings.

Guest access
Guests can come and go as they please via their own entrance and they are welcome to use a downstairs sitting room which gives access to the garden and the wisteria covered pergola with its large comfortable sofa. The garden, apart from immediately around the house, has deliberately been left "wild" so is full of birds, bees and butterflies plus fireflies end of June, beginning of July. Totalling about 1 hectare, we also have a number of Etruscan caves where porcupine live. There are two lazy, low-impact cats who live with us but they don’t have access to the guest bedroom or bathroom

Other things to note
Italian state tourism tax (€2.20 per person, per night, max 5 nights) is not included in the total price as this has to be paid in cash at check in.
Check in is between 5-8 but we are very flexible.
We can also arrange local car hire for you if you arrive by train.

Location

Orvieto, Italy

Being in the countryside between Orvieto and Lake Bolsena there are many lovely walks in the area that can be done from the house. These are often along old pilgrim paths and even lengths of original paved Roman road.

By car there are any number of fascinating hill-towns, often Etruscan in origin, within easy reach such as Civita di Bagnoregio (15mins) , Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana (1hr), and the picture-postcard scenery of southern Tuscany is just 1 hour away with Pienza, Montalcino and Montepulciano, all must places to visit.

We have lived here for 15 years and been running tours in Italy for almost 25 so we can give you plenty of advice ... should you need it.

We (Lois and Paul). originally from Britain, decided to move to Italy in 2003, after years of travels throughout Europe and beyond. We found and began to renovate a large old farmhouse in Umbria which has become a much-loved home. Lois is a musician by training (violinist), and has worked for many years managing walking and archaeological tours throughout Italy as well as helping foreigners renovate their properties in and around her region of Italy. Paul is a professional photographer/author (as well as conservationist and carpenter) who has led botanical, natural history and photographic trips for many years. Together, we run photographic, nature and flower tours within Italy, love good food and wine, exploring new places, and of course - welcoming like-minded people to our corner of Italy!
