Built in the Eighteen-Nineties, the Sheriff Murphy house is a charming "Victorian" adobe home, with a wrap-around porch, two bedrooms, kitchen, a great room, and bathroom with a large old-fashioned bath tub (w/shower). The fenced in yard is ringed with fruit trees.

A great option for a nice stop along the way through the mountains to Silver City. Or a chance to spend some time in a peaceful and welcoming small western town with friendly neighbors on the edge of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Area.

The space
The house has a fairly large fenced yard surrounding it with minimal landscaping due to the owners/guests pets and the deer who help themselves to anything they can eat while tenants are asleep or away for a while. The wrap-around porch adds a lot of usable space to the home with a few comfy chairs and an outdoor dining table with 4 chairs. The porch is sturdier than it looks (based on inspections we have had), but we have plans to repair/replace it as soon as we can.

The inside space is bright and open with high ceilings, many large windows, and fairly large rooms. The master bedroom with a king bed is spacious and comfortable with a tv that connects to an Amazon Fire and Apple TV device, but does not have cable. The guest bedroom is cozy with a full/double size bed. The bathroom is large with a stand-alone antique tub/shower. The great room has a large couch and loveseat sitting area near a beautiful wood stove. There is also a dining table in the great room. The kitchen is cozy and functional with a 4 top "breakfast nook" table in the corner.

***We are pet-friendly, but do charge a pet fee based on how long you are staying. Please see details in the "Additional Rules" section of the listing.***

Where you’ll be

Hillsboro, New Mexico, United States

This home is located in Hillsboro, New Mexico, United States.
Hillsboro, New Mexico is an historic adobe village, dating from the 1880s, when it was at the county seat and center of the Black Range Mining district. It's now a small but active community of artists, writers, ranchers and other colorful characters. It's located where two branches of the pretty Percha Creek converge, and the tall trees that line Main Street, which is also NM 152, tap into the moisture flowing in the shallow aquifer.

There is a great cafe, The General Store, a local vineyard tasting room, The Black Range Vinyard, a classic old Post Office, the Black Range Museum, Hillsboro Historical Society, a couple antique shops, and a Library/Community Center, which hosts monthly concerts and other community events. The cafe and library both offer free wi-fi. On Saturday mornings downtown, there is often local music and fresh local produce in season.

There is not a gas station or grocery store in town, but there is a gas station/convenience store at Caballo Lake, a 20 minute drive away. Truth or Consequences, NM is a 35 minute drive away where you can find grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, hot springs, and even a small movie theater.

We are Wildlife Biologists who split our time between South Carolina, New Mexico, and South Africa for work. Travis is a biology professor and together we run an environmental biology study away program for undergraduates. Travis blacksmiths in his spare time, and Megan spends a lot of time with our three dogs. We love traveling and adventure, but also really appreciate getting to spend time at home.

We travel for work between our houses in SC and NM. We rent out whichever houses we are not currently staying in.
