About this listing

A one-of-a-kind romantic Zen getaway vacation rental with bonsai garden and koi pond in the heart of the Volcano rainforest.

The space

Take Highway 11 to Volcano. After mile 26, turn left on Pearl Avenue. If coming from Kona/South Point, pass the 27 mile marker. After the Lanihuli/Wright Road sign, turn right on Pearl Avenue. At the lefthand corner of Pearl and 7th, just a few miles away from the actively erupting Halemaumau Crater in the Volcanoes National Park, discover a delightful romantic studio surrounded by a Japanese bonsai garden and koi pond.

This beautiful open-beam studio boasts a kitchen complete with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave oven and gas stove. Amenities include Japanese dishes, fleece-lined hapi coats and wireless internet, video and CD players. A queen-size bed with down comforter as well as an additional futon couch which opens into a bed, can accomodate 4 people. An infrared heater keeps you toasty on chilly evenings.

Laundry facilities with detergent and supplies ($6 per load) is available to make your traveling convenient and get you ready for the next adventure on your tour of the islands.

Enjoy the Asian touches of Ikebana and island floral arrangements while sipping a cup of ocha (tea), Kona coffee or enjoying island fruits or macadamia treats.

Stroll through the garden filled with bonsai--miniature Japanese trees which line the pathway and enjoy the giant koi while you contemplate the serenity of the Volcano with its native ohia and tree ferns. Listen for the native birds of the Volcano rainforest. You might even spy a Hawaiian hawk.

Talk story with native-born owner and bonsai/ jewelry designer, Fung Irvine, who will charm you with local history and sites to visit on your stay in Hawaii as well as direct you to the best eating places on the island.

For those first-timers to Volcano, please note that although we are on a tropical island, the Volcano is at 3400 foot elevation and gets pretty nippy (we've had hail and temperatures have been known to dip to the mid-forties). Don't forget to bring some warm clothes for chilly mornings and evenings as well as to visit the active volcanoes.

Fung has truly carved out a slice of heaven at the House of Bonsai. Her trees are beautiful, and sitting next to her koi pond and watching them swim is about as relaxing as it gets. Staying here was an absolute delight - from the pristine interior with all the amenities we could need and more, to the generous hand-prepared breakfast she made for us in the morning. Fung and Mike were spectacular hosts, and we enjoyed talking with them just as much as we enjoyed staying in their amazing home. If we ever return to the Big Island, we'll definitely make a point to stay at the House of Bonsai again. Here's hoping our paths will cross again in the future!

This is an incredibly cozy and perfect place to stay if you're visiting Volcano National Park. Both spots are absolute gems! Fung and Mike made us feel very welcome. And the breakfast was so delicious! Thank you!!

The house is super clean and Carolyn has got all of daily necessities you need. Fung even has coffee powder handy and a fresh cup of hot coffee just make my day. Really enjoy it, especially after a two-hour drive from Kona to Volcano. Fung surprises us again with a lovely home made complementary breakfast in the morning. Bagels are yummy and the local grown papaya with lime so refreshing. The house is just two miles drive from the volcano entrance. I wish we could have two days there instead of just one day short stop. The day we arrived was raining all day so we didn't have chances to go to Jagger museum at night. So plan your itenerary carefully and make sure you have two days at Fung's place. Highly recommended and definitely will stay at Carolyn's place again next time we visit Volcano.

Fung and Mike are easily the best hosts I have ever met through AirBnb. Their place is more stunning than the photos let on and the homemade breakfast will give you the perfect start to any day. They are both wonderful people who have great recommendations for activities/sights to do on the island. I highly recommend staying at least 3 nights. After I checked out, I forgot to do a sweep of the place and left my house keys and water bottle behind. Not only did Mike send me a text immediately after I left, but offered to mail them to my next destination when he found out I did not have time to retrieve them. (Please don't repeat my mistake, it is both costly in time and money and hosts are not expected to be this gracious). I just received the package at my AirBnb and want to say thank you to Mike and Fung for being such kind people.

The Bonsai House is the perfect location for a visit to Volcano National Park. A mile into Volcano Village, with good restaurants, and 5 minutes to the entrance to the Park. The studio is extremely comfortable - the futon worked perfectly as a second bed. Japanese artwork throughout is charming, and the Japanese screen adds a nice level of privacy between the main bed and the futon. The box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts was a lovely welcoming touch. Be sure to ask Fung to show you her jewelry - a perfect souvenir of a lovely stay.

Born and raised in Hawaii, I am a retired high school English teacher who enjoys every moment of life doing the things that bring joy, adventure and relaxation. I can spend hours on the dance floor free-style dancing, playing mahjong or djembe drumming. I am co-founder of the Big Island Jazz and Blues Society responsible for bringing in performers like Maria Muldaur, Ray Brown Jr., or Keahi Conjugacion and Volcano Choy Jr. to our humble Hilo town.

In quiet moments I love working with my bonsai and spending my time designing my koi pond. Working with our rich Volcano soil planting organic vegetables is also an enjoyable pastime. Travel to distant lands is always exciting, my favorite spots being Iquitos on the Amazon, Machu Picchu, the Cotswolds in England and bungie jumping in New Zealand.

Saturdays find me with the wind in my face on the back of our new Ultra Classic Harley heading for lunch at The Fish and Hog in Waimea, Aunty Kanae's for teri pork or Gramma's in Honoka'a. I love being a biker babe and we did a one-month bike tour to Sturgis and the Badlands. Maybe one day I can learn to ski and hope happy visitors to my House of Bonsai will successfully get me there. Oh, I also create whimsical jewelry so visit my workshop and take home some one-of-a-kind pieces.

I was a caregiver for my awesome dad who passed at the age of 101. Yes, we have longevity in our family. Dad comes from a family of 15. He and Mom taught us to be resilient and independent, to let nothing stand in our way and to always have a sense of humor. I have some fabulous stories of Dad's to share with all who visit and want to take home a treasured piece of the islands found nowhere else in the world. Come and visit me in Volcano, and partake of a unique experience.
