A one-of-a-kind romantic Zen getaway vacation rental with bonsai garden and koi pond in the heart of the Volcano rainforest.

At the lefthand corner of Pearl and 7th, just a few miles away from the actively erupting Halemaumau Crater in the Volcanoes National Park, discover a delightful romantic studio surrounded by a Japanese bonsai garden and koi pond.
This beautiful open-beam studio boasts a kitchen complete with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave oven and gas stove. Amenities such as Japanese dishes, fleece-lined hapi coats and wireless internet, video and CD players. A queen-size bed with down comforter as well as an additional futon couch which opens into a bed, can accomodate 4 people. An infrared heater keeps you toasty on chilly evenings.
Laundry facilities with detergent and supplies ($6 per load) is available to make your traveling convenient and get you ready for the next adventure on your tour of the islands.
Enjoy the Asian touches of Ikebana and island floral arrangements while sipping a cup of ocha (tea), Kona coffee or enjoying island fruits or macadamia treats.
Stroll through the garden filled with bonsai--miniature Japanese trees which line the pathway and enjoy the giant koi while you contemplate the serenity of the Volcano with its native ohia and tree ferns. Listen for the native birds of the Volcano rainforest. You might even spy a Hawaiian hawk.
Talk story with native-born owner and bonsai/ jewelry designer, Fung Irvine, who will charm you with local history and sites to visit on your stay in Hawaii as well as direct you to the best eating places on the island.
For those first-timers to Volcano, please note that although we are on a tropical island, the Volcano is at 3400 foot elevation and gets pretty nippy (we've had hail and temperatures have been known to dip to the mid-forties). Don't forget to bring some warm clothes for chilly mornings and evenings as well as to visit the active volcanoes.

Interaction with Guests
Hosts are available at any time to answer questions or guide visitors to sites and shopping.
An actively erupting volcano as a backyard is an amazing gift of nature. The Volcano community has some nice eateries and galleries to visit.
There is public bus transportation but it is best to rent a car as the distances from towns is far.
No smoking indoors. Turn off all lights (especially heater) when leaving the premises. Check that all faucets are turned off. Avoid long showers or letting faucets run--we are on catchment!!
For longer stays, leave used sheets and towels in basket on Saturday morning to be laundered by hostess.
Fung's home is beyond (email hidden)ry very clean and comfortable,it really makes you feel at home!Everything equipped, including stress relief oil. Thanks, and the breakfast is very delicious, you can't miss it!
The house is a perfect location to the park, quiet and cozy, super clean and lovely. Fung and her husband are such nice hosts and really communicative! The breakfast was a treat, especially the Ohelo berry jam!
Very lovely place located nearby volcano national park. Fung was great and friendly without being intrusive. The accomodation was wonderful with all the necessities provided for including for cooking. The decor and garden were great. We'll definitely stay here again if we were to come back. Definitely a great choice if you are looking in this area.
Five hundred words is not enough for me to describe how wonderful Fung's home is or how welcoming she was.
The town of Volcano, which is where Fung's home is located, is adjacent to Hawai'i Volcanos National Park. Fung's place is about a 5 minute drive to the park. (BTW, other Air B&B listings claim to be walking distance to the park. That may be, but you really need a car inside the park to get to anything outside of the visitor's center.)
The studio that she has built for guests is entirely separate from the main house and is completely self-contained with full kitchen, very nice bathroom, and huge closet to store all your clutter. The apartment has high ceilings and seems way bigger than it's actual square footage. Apartment and grounds of property are peaceful and elegant and are a perfect intimate counterbalance to the huge scale and grandeur you will be experiencing at the park.
Fung herself is a delightful host. Not nosy or in your business, but available if need be and a great store of information about the park, the area, and Hawai'i itself. We could have spent hours talking with her, and we do not really consider ourselves to be "B&B people."
We plan on returning to the area again and look forward to staying with Fung when we do.
Bonsai house is a great place to stay and I would highly recommend it. The studio is very clean, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable and relaxing. This is the perfect place to stay for a couple who wants to spend some time at Volcano National Park. The park is just minutes away. The studio is completely equipped for cooking meals and the bed is very comfortable (with very soft blankets and sheets). It's located in the rainforest so we woke up to birds and smells of the forest. Fung and Michael are very sweet and helpful and the breakfast was amazing! Best we had on the island. If we are ever back in the area we would definitely be back at the Bonsai house.
This is easily the best Air BnB I have ever stayed in. Clean, large house with all the amenities available (including small little things that make the entire stay more comfortable). Would definitely stay here every time I come back to the Big Island. Also a 5 min drive from the Volcano National (website hidden). Breakfast was excellent!
Fung and Mike we're welcoming and gracious and generous and, just more than we ever expected. The space is tastefully decorated with little personal touches that reveal the care and effort our hosts put into making their guests feel welcomed and comfortable. It is a clean, comfortable, spacious home with all the amenities you'd expect, and more. The conversations with Mike and Fung (and the dogs) were an added bonus, the breakfast of local fruit and jams was a special luxury. I couldn't recommend this spot any more highly. Please go visit Volcano and stay with Fung. You will thank yourself.
Born and raised in Hawaii, I am a retired high school English teacher who enjoys every moment of life doing the things that bring joy, adventure and relaxation. I can spend hours on the dance floor free-style dancing, playing mahjong or taiko drumming. I am co-founder of the Big Island Jazz and Blues Society responsible for bringing in performers like Maria Muldaur or Ray Brown Jr. to our humble Hilo town.
In quiet moments I love working with my bonsai and spending my time designing my koi pond. Working with our rich Volcano soil planting organic vegetables is also an enjoyable pastime. Travel to distant lands is always exciting, my favorite spots being Iquitos on the Amazon, Machu Picchu, the Cotswolds in England and bungie jumping in New Zealand.
Saturdays find me with the wind in my face on the back of my buddy's softtail Harley heading for brunch at Daniel Thiebault's in Waimea or the Fifties Place for a burger in Laupahoehoe. I love being a biker babe and we're saving our pennies to do a one-month bike tour to Sturgis and the Badlands next year. Maybe one day I can learn to ski and hope happy visitors to my House of Bonsai will successfully get me there.
I was a caregiver for my awesome 101-yearold dad (he passed in December) and yes, we have longevity in our family. Dad comes from a family of 15. He and Mom taught us to be resilient and independent, to let nothing stand in our way and to always have a sense of humor. I have some fabulous stories of Dad's to share with all who visit and want to take home a treasured piece of the islands found nowhere else in the world. Come and visit me in Volcano, and partake of a unique experience.
