Interaction with Guests
About the Host: Been Living in Costa Rica for 13 years, my experience and knowledge of the lifestyle, cultures and adventures is available to help others discover the Magic of La Fortuna and other parts of this special country.
La Fortuna is an enjoyable experience for all , with flowing rivers, natural hot springs, waterfalls, the 33 mile fresh water Lake Arenal, Cerro Chatto Crater Lake , butterfly gardens and a large variety of amenities. The many vacationers who find the Pure Vida return home feeling satisfied and relaxed.
Visitors can get to Fortuna by Bus, Car or Plane. The road from both of Costa Rica’s airports are paved, well marked and scenic. The plane is a 12 passenger that flies low allowing you to see Costa Rica’s beautiful landscapes; sit back and enjoy the many waterfalls, rivers and volcanoes.
The Arenal Volcano has its own National Park (Parque National Vulcan Arenal)
This almost 30,000 acre national park allows visitors to get an even better understanding of the Arenal Volcano and a much closer look. The Flora and fauna found it this primary rain forest is some of the newest on earth.
There are plenty of nature hikes in the area; the one I highly recommend is the climb to Cerro Chatto Lake. Vulcan Chatto is a dormant volcano; its crater is filled from hundreds of year of rain fall. It is an intense uphill hike to over 3,500 feet but I assure you it is worth every step of the way. Park hours are from 8am to 5pm
The La Fortuna Waterfall is another one of Mother Nature’s tours. Take a short 4klm hike from La Fortuna and you will be standing up top of the 230 foot waterfall. Gaze upon the power of water as it rolls of and dumps into the fresh rejuvenating pools bellow. Hike down the base to the pools to recharge, relax and take some photos. Waterfalls are open from 8-5pm
La Fortuna and all the amenities anyone could need is a 15 minute walk or 2 minute cab ride from the cabins.

No Smoking in Cabins no noise past 10
Unfortunately, we couldn't make our dates. We had too much on our wish list for Costa Rican adventures! Jonathan's response to our dilemma was very professional, courteous and helpful. We would certainly contact him again.
I visited La Fortuna after a few days in Monteverde where I had not seen much wildlife and was disappointed. I corresponded via email with Jonathan before arriving in La Fortuna. He recommended a Cano Negro tour which I would not have been aware of, and so I did that and it was wonderful. I saw so much. The tour guide (Edson) was excellent. It was the highlight of my trip. I appreciate a great deal, Jonathan responding so promptly to emails. He also came to the Cabinas when we arrived and helped us plan the next day and returned to bring us the vouchers. The success of my trip was in large part due to Jonathan.
I would also like to thank Felix and his family. The location of the Cabinas is hard to beat. Near the foot of Volcan Arenal. My family enjoyed eating breakfast near the birds. We didn't spend much time in the cabin except to sleep and beds were very comfortable.
The cabina was in a beautiful setting- secluded yet a 2 min drive to The center of La Fortuna. Jonathan was extremely helpful. We are last minute travelers and he helped us book a zip line experience super late the evening before for a 8 am reservation with transportation and everything. Without him we would have probably missed out on the experience. He booked it just trusting our word that we would be there! Felix lives at the front of the property and cooked us an awesome breakfast! If you want to cook a meal in the cabina make sure to ask for a few more dishes and cooking supplies. An awesome place, in beautiful nature and close to the river.
Jonathan was very helpful ! The rafting tour we booked with him was truly the highlight of our trip !
The cabins are very simple accommodations. The location is nice, situated by the river with a trail that leads to its banks. Each of the cannas we stayed in were two bedrooms, with two beds in each, One full sized and one twin. There is a fridge, but no stove. Breakfast is provided and wonderful. Felix and his wife run the place, they are gracious and wonderful hosts but only speak spanish. Having a spanish speaker makes things much smoother. There are a couple of puppies on the property and a cat or two, they are all friendly. The cabins are rustic so if you are looking for luxury, this is not the place, but if you are looking for somewhere to keep the rain off in between hikes and adventures this place is a good one.
Our host Felix is a very kind man. His Cabinas are beautiful and his breakfast delicious. Imagine lying in a hammock with hummingbirds flying around. The cabinas are spacious and the view is amazing. Johnny attached his name to all this to sell his tours. May be ok if you have no car. But with your own transport everything is easy and cheap to do by yourself. The Catarat is 2 km oproad and free hotsprings are just around the corner at Tobacon Hotsprings. Pass the yellow gate and your in heaven.
I would like to come back!
Thanks for the review and your visit.
I decided to respond to clear things up for you and future guest.
If I did not attach my name to Cabinas la Catarata you would not have had the pleasure of staying there as easily and Felix and his cabins would be empty as they were for years. I lived at the Cabins for 4 years and Felix is like family, my name has been attached to the cabins for this time and now with AirBnB. Felix Does not speak English and appreciates what I do to help him and his family. The AirBnB listing is of my doing and I do it for the opportunity to help him and visitors to Costa Rica. I have been living in Costa Rica for 13 years, love and respect the people and the country and pursue new activities and companies to help regularly. I am travel writer and business owner of Paradise Adventures Costa Rica, one of La Fortuna top Operators, check out our TripAdvisor page for more. I do not understand why you are making your review look like this is a bad thing (Unnecessary) when its very positive for all. I met you guys, gave you a map, directions and provided you with information, including the free hotsprings. La Fortuna survives on tourism, it is the largest source of income and I provide my experience as an aid to support the economy. The free stuff used to be less crowded and filled with locals as they cannot afford to take part in the many adventures around la Fortuna as the average hourly wage is $2. I am a bit disappointed in you lack of appreciation and thanks. Sincerely, Jonathan Turcotte, family, friend and host of Cabinas La Catarata.
