Interaction with guests
Hardly at all.
It's a homey, curious and eclectic neighborhood. It's full of tiny houses and also great estates from the turn-of-the-last century. We have all sorts of services within walking distance; restaurants, banks, grocery stores.
Buses are close and will hook a traveler up with the trains to other parts of LA County.
This is a non-smoking facility; if you wish to smoke, please do so outside. Thank you!
The kitchenette doesn’t have space for a lot of staples; also, our local ordinances do not allow for a stove. While we’re sure you are not going to be whipping up a Thanksgiving dinner, we have provided enough equipment so you can make good meals. Regarding the Zojirushi Electric Skillet, the Cuisinart Convection Oven and Toaster, and the Sanyo Microwave, please consult the User’s Guides in the bottom drawer on the right side of the sink for proper operation and cleaning tips.
Please check with us before you go out and buy, for instance, one-use-only condiments or a bag of sugar. We have lots of things that are silly for you to buy if we can supply it. That includes kitchen gadgets, food staples, tinfoil, serving pieces, etc. Let me know if you want us to leave the item for you on the counter or table while you’re out or how you’d like us to get that to you.
There is a fruit picker outside next to the lime tree. Help yourself to limes and oranges. We have lemons on the property, usually year ’round. Let Ellen know if you want some lemons.
If we are making too much noise, or there’s something bothering you or something you need, let us know immediately. You can either speak to us, send an email, or text or call us. Ellen’s email address is (email hidden) and Ken’s is (email hidden); Ellen’s text / cell number is (phone number hidden), Ken’s text / cell number is (phone number hidden). Also, while Altadena is generally pretty quiet, we have provided ear plugs in the top drawer of the bed stand closest to the outside, should you need them. If you don’t like the sound of the running water in the fountain, you can either shut it off at the switch to the right of the front door to the suite, or use ear plugs.
We don’t provide daily maid service since this isn’t a hotel. However, if you are here for an extended amount of time and want to have us contact a housekeeper, we’ll be happy to do that. The housekeeper we use charges $40 for the thorough cleaning of the guest suite. Let us know your preferred time and we’ll arrange it, and you can leave payment for her on the kitchen table in the suite.
Our garbage service comes early on Friday mornings. The black receptacle is for regular garbage; the blue can is for recyclables including the normal stuff: cans, bottles, all plastics.
You’re welcome to do laundry. Just give us advance notice and we’ll do the necessary dog-wrangling so you won’t have to deal with cold noses and possibly dog annoyance.
We do have dogs as we noted in the Airbnb profile. If you decide you want to interact with our critters, let us know. (When Ken and I travel, we long for doggie time so we won’t think you’re weird if you’re like us.) Otherwise, we’ll be as strict as we can about keeping them away from your space. Likewise, we request that you be careful about always closing gates on our property.
If you have a dog, we need to set a time where we can introduce our dogs to yours. They should have a great time playing but the first “contact” is important. Please note that you have your own doggie door to the right of the human door.
Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund, including service fees.

I have been hosting people with love and joy for decades! I love Mexico, Africa, China, folk art from all over the world, great food, books, theater, wonderful conversation and giving people what they want and need when they travel.
We also have a dog door if you can't stand the idea of traveling without your dog. While we have some house rules about dogs, if your dog is a good guest, we want them with us! For an extra fee, we'll even watch them, feed them and let them play with our dogs while you go to Disneyland all day long.
The bed in our guest suite is designed for readers. You don't even have to get out of bed to shut off the lights when you're reading into the wee hours.
Do you need an escape to finish your thesis or your book? We just might have the right solution for you. You tell us what kind of office chair you need, and we'll rotate in the style that you want so you can hide and write all day.
My husband, Ken Gruberman and I, are people folks but we also are privacy people and know how to leave guests alone.
