The space

Warm and gracious hosts, married couple Ellen Snortland and Ken Gruberman have a guest suite with private entrance, ample street parking, WiFi, HD cable, DVD player and kitchenette, in their romantic 1920s Spanish home in Altadena, the charming foothills of Pasadena.

Dog friendly with doggie door for your beloved pet. The bed size is a double bed with gel foam top and heated mattress pad in the winter. The room has both a ceiling fan, Honeywell portable air conditioner and DeLonghi space heater so you'll always be comfortable.

Altadena is a beautiful and cozy community adjacent to Pasadena. Close to the Rose Bowl, Old Pasadena, Gamble House, Huntington Library, downtown Los Angeles, Fuller Seminary, Jet Propulsion Lab, Carnegie Observatory, Norton-Simon Museum, Institute of Domestic Technology (check their calendar for classes that may be in session during your stay), within walking distance of the Mariposa Creamery! We are within easy driving distance to Universal City, 6 Flags, and the LA County Arboretum, Hollywood, Burbank. You can walk to the heads of wilderness hikes and much, much more.

Mass transit is doable, and the charming shopping area of Altadena with its "home grown" charm harkens back to another time.

Perfect for tourists and snowbirds from Northern climes; e.g., guests from Norway, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota love it!

Ellen and Ken have extraordinary add-ons:

Need coaching for a book project? Ellen is a professional author coach. Want to shop in Mexico but are not bold enough to drive yourself? Ken is the Tech Daddy, a certified Apple consultant and there’s an Apple Store in Pasadena. Want tile mosaic lessons? World famous mosaic artist, Leigh Adams, is standing by to give lessons. Want a gourmet Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera style meal? Ellen & Ken can host it for you.

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 2PM

This is a non-smoking facility; if you wish to smoke, please do so outside. Thank you!

The kitchenette doesn’t have space for a lot of staples; also, our local ordinances do not allow for a stove. While we’re sure you are not going to be whipping up a Thanksgiving dinner, we have provided enough equipment so you can make good meals. Regarding the Zojirushi Electric Skillet, the Cuisinart Convection Oven and Toaster, and the Sanyo Microwave, please consult the User’s Guides in the bottom drawer on the right side of the sink for proper operation and cleaning tips.

Please check with us before you go out and buy, for instance, one-use-only condiments or a bag of sugar. We have lots of things that are silly for you to buy if we can supply it. That includes kitchen gadgets, food staples, tinfoil, serving pieces, etc. Let me know if you want us to leave the item for you on the counter or table while you’re out or how you’d like us to get that to you.

There is a fruit picker outside next to the lime tree. Help yourself to limes and oranges. We have lemons on the property, usually year ’round. Let Ellen know if you want some lemons.

If we are making too much noise, or there’s something bothering you or something you need, let us know immediately. You can either speak to us, send an email, or text or call us. Ellen’s email address is (email hidden) and Ken’s is (email hidden); Ellen’s text / cell number is (phone number hidden), Ken’s text / cell number is (phone number hidden). Also, while Altadena is generally pretty quiet, we have provided ear plugs in the top drawer of the bed stand closest to the outside, should you need them. If you don’t like the sound of the running water in the fountain, you can either shut it off at the switch to the right of the front door to the suite, or use ear plugs.

••• Housekeeping
We don’t provide daily maid service since this isn’t a hotel. However, if you are here for an extended amount of time and want to have us contact a housekeeper, we’ll be happy to do that. The housekeeper we use charges $40 for the thorough cleaning of the guest suite. Let us know your preferred time and we’ll arrange it, and you can leave payment for her on the kitchen table in the suite.

••• Recycling
Our garbage service comes early on Friday mornings. The black receptacle is for regular garbage; the blue can is for recyclables including the normal stuff: cans, bottles, all plastics.

••• Laundry
You’re welcome to do laundry. Just give us advance notice and we’ll do the necessary dog-wrangling so you won’t have to deal with cold noses and possibly dog annoyance.

••• Dogs
We do have dogs as we noted in the Airbnb profile. If you decide you want to interact with our critters, let us know. (When Ken and I travel, we long for doggie time so we won’t think you’re weird if you’re like us.) Otherwise, we’ll be as strict as we can about keeping them away from your space. Likewise, we request that you be careful about always closing gates on our property.

If you have a dog, we need to set a time where we can introduce our dogs to yours. They should have a great time playing but the first “contact” is important. Please note that you have your own doggie door to the right of the human door.

Ellen and Ken's place is truly a tranquil hideaway in a sweet location. They are fabulous hosts, and the place is very well supplied with everything you'll need. And this part of Altadena is very cool, almost semi-rural, and so close to hiking trails. I would definitely stay there again.

Location is ideal - it's away from the hustling and bustling of both Pasadena and LA, but close enough to get there in minutes. The house is quaint, decorated with a lot of personal touches. There is some traffic noise since the house is located on a semi-busy street. We stayed at their guest suite and owner installed a water fountain to try to cancel the noise out, and to create ambiance. However, if running water keeps you up at night, then the guest suite probably is not ideal. Also note that the guest suite has a double bed, so pretty tight for a couple. It was wonderful to smell coffee in the morning from the owner, whose kitchen is right next to the guest suite. Some minor noise from the kitchen was also experienced. All in all, owner is very communicative and great host.

The best hosts and stay that I ever had!!!!! It truly feels like the place is your own despite being attached to a larger home, you wouldn't know it. The hosts are virtually invisible, until you accidentally run into each other coming/going and then wish you saw more of them. I don't think I can include a link, but if you want to skip all of the other (amazing and accurate!) reviews and see a two minute YouTube clip that sums up staying here, search "the onion" and "ninja parade".... come to Ellen and Ken's, and you may just find some candy, not just on your pillow, but in your pocket!!!!!!!!

Very relaxing & comfortable. All needs have been anticipated, if anything comes up Ellen & Ken quickly respond. The fountain, orange & lemon trees outside the door & secure, private area all help to make the stay pleasurable.

Ellen was very responsive over text message as we coordinated our arrival. She met us outside of the house and showed us around the suite. The suite was clean, tidy and perfect for our needs. The kitchen is really excellent for its size, though we didn't end up taking advantage of it. The bed is incredibly comfortable and cozy. Overall it was an excellent spot to stay while visiting family in the neighborhood. I would highly recommend to others. Thanks, Ellen!

We had a lovely four month stay in Ellen's guest suite. Ken and Ellen are gracious and welcoming hosts, the room is nice, and the private backyard (with a great grill that we used many times) is wonderful and an excellent oasis for small dogs.

I have been hosting people with love and joy for decades! I love Mexico, Africa, China, folk art from all over the world, great food, books, theater, wonderful conversation and giving people what they want and need when they travel.

We also have a dog door if you can't stand the idea of traveling without your dog. While we have some house rules about dogs, if your dog is a good guest, we want them with us! For an extra fee, we'll even watch them, feed them and let them play with our dogs while you go to Disneyland all day long.

The bed in our guest suite is designed for readers. You don't even have to get out of bed to shut off the lights when you're reading into the wee hours.

Do you need an escape to finish your thesis or your book? We just might have the right solution for you. You tell us what kind of office chair you need, and we'll rotate in the style that you want so you can hide and write all day.

My husband, Ken Gruberman and I, are people folks but we also are privacy people and know how to leave guests alone.
