About This Listing
The ancient Haybarn near our XVIIth century farmhouse, not far from Siena and Arezzo, is now a spacious, comfy, independent cottage, full of light. It enjoys the view of the river Ambra Valley. Suitable for 2-6 guests. A perfect writing retreat!
In the beautiful countryside between Siena and Arezzo, known as Valdambra (the Valley of the River Ambra), the top floor of an ancient haybarn has been converted into a spacious apartment full of light, overlooking a perfectly preserved Tuscan landscape: a unique, harmonious blend of luxuriant oak tree woods and of well kept farmland, ( a hospitable natural environment for roe deers, foxes, porcupines, squirrels, badgers, and all sorts of birds, such as skylarks, blue-tits, nightingales, hawks as well as, near the river, kingfishers, and white and grey herons); thanks to several years of organic farming, an increasing number of butterflies dance around wild flowers . At a short distance, a century-old castle still supervises the peace and quiet of the site
Carefully renovated by the owners, a couple of academics who live since 1995 in the near farmhouse , the apartment has already proved to be a welcoming holiday home, and a perfect writing retreat. Academics and artists are welcome.
Comfortably furnished and well equipped (fireplace, tv, wi-fi, central heating, a.c., stove, fridge, microwave, washing machine, kitchen tools, bath towels and bed-linen), it also benefits from a private outdoor area , with gazebo (ideal for meals, reading, conversation, daydreaming and relax) .
Excellent for a couple , but also for a small family ( the apartment sleeps 2-4 people). An extra room on the ground floor of the haybarn , ( a separate cosy studio-bedroom- with kitchenette and bathroom, with shower) is also available, upon agreement.
Nearby, horse stables and riding centre, polo grounds, swimming pools, thermal springs and spas; pleasant walks through the woods lead to farmhouses, watermills, vineyards, medieval towers and charming villages where one can enjoy concerts, festivals, theatre, entertainment, food (and outlet shopping).. The haybarn is also a very convenient starting point for visiting museums and galleries of the neighbouring art cities: Siena is only 25 min away, Arezzo, 40 mns; Florence, just over one hour.Fra Siena e Arezzo, nel verde, spazioso,

Our guests enjoy perfect privacy, private outdoor area with gazebo and garden. They have access to the conspicuous library of the owners, both academics.
I nostri ospiti godono una perfetta privacy, un ingresso, un giardino con gazebo indipendenti. Hanno accesso alla ricca biblioteca dei proprietari, due docenti universitari.
Meeting our guests, when they wish, it is always a pleasant and interesting experience. We are anyway always nearby, since we live in the adjacent farmhouse.
Incontrare gli ospiti, quando lo desiderino, è sempre piacevole e interessante. Sarò sempre comunque a disposizione, nella vicina casa colonica dove vivo, per qualunque necessità.
Many lovely villages in the neighbouring countryside, as well as art cities, historical gardens, museums, music and theatre, folk festivals, spas, pools, riding schools, shops (even fashionable ones), food markets and restaurants.
Car park is not a problem near the Haybarn. Hiring a car is advisable for exploring a beautiful and not very well known territory.
An excellent riding school, run by an extraordinary Lady of the Horses, is located within walking distance. Guided tours to art cities and museums, can be arranged.
We love the quiet of the place, where we moved 18 years ago. We wish our guests will cooperate in preserving this aspect of country living.
The presence of pets can be negotiated. Smokers are invited to do so preferably outdoors.
Beautiful location, so quiet, safe. Walking distance to the equestrian school and castle nearby. We made excursions to Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano all 30 to 45 minutes away.
Our hostess set up everything with the comforts of home. It was so lovely having air conditioning, refrigerators, firm bed, and clothes washer. Our kids loved that there was a flat right downstairs that they could stay in. Gavina was available to answer questions and to recommend nearby sights and restaurants. Highly recommended for a peaceful stay with options to explore Tuscany.
Our entire family had a wonderful time at Gavina's lovingly and tastefully restored historic Tuscany stone barn. Gavina is a simply wonderful host and if you have trepidations about going to Italy, and using airbnb because you speak no Italian--this is your place. Gavina's English is excellent, which was very helpful. Gavina assisted us with everything that we needed, from helping us locate a grocery store AND GOING WITH US TO SHOP! to answering questions and providing maps for walking/hiking, and sightseeing. All of her recommendations for off the beaten path villages, great restaurants (within a 5 minute drive of the house) and even local wine were excellent! Even her neighbors are super nice.
The house and apartment were superb with everything needed for a very comfortable stay. The very high ceilings, beautiful wood work and stone, modern new bathroom, large living room (we had 5 and there was ample room) and several excellent outdoor terrace spaces made for a vacation to remember. We were already planning our next visit to Gavina's before we left. Needless to say, we loved it here!!
Gavina's restored haybarn in the Tuscan country side was a great place for a quiet break and perfect location to explore Siena, Chianti and the rest of the region. Gavina and her husband Gioachino were great hosts - Gioachino very kindly took us an a tour of Ambra valley; to a great local cafe in town and up to a local castle. The haybarn itself is well restored and extremely comfortable, and has a beautiful vista up to the neighbouring castle on the other side of the river. Overall, A perfect few days in the quiet Tuscan countryside... Thank you Gioachino & Gavina
Our stay in Siena was more than we had hoped for. The picturesque, winding, private country path we drove down lead to a delightful stone haven. Tuscany in spring is a sight to behold, with rolling fields an improbable shade of green and butterflies everywhere. There was even a castle on the opposite hill.
Gavina and her husband were so kind and accommodating and the hay barn was clean and cosy - with all of the finishing touches that made it a home away from home. We felt safe and comfortable at all times.
I couldn't recommend this place highly enough and hope to be fortunate enough to visit again and spend a few weeks there exploring the countryside.
About the Host, Gavina
I am an Academic and my research field is Iconology and Philosophy. After being brought up and educated abroad, I finally moved to the Sienese countryside, where I live with my Husband, an academic as well , 5 cats and a dog (no kids, but many friends, and friend's children around). Our house was formerly a large farmhouse, so we have plenty of space. We enjoy making the Haybarn available to people who like nature, books, art, music, good food and quiet. We offer marvellous isolation without solitude, since a very lively and interesting human and cultural context is just round the corner. Long walks, horsebackriding, yoga and cookery classes are among the pleasures of this area, as well as rejuvenating spas; both in winter and summer there is so much, concerts, parties, exhibitions, festivals, to choose that sometimes we just want to stay at home and entertain ourselves with relaxed conversation and a candle-light dinner, on the terrace overlooking the valley. The river Ambra, the evening breeze, and the crickets, provide the music.
Holiday writing retreat in a beautiful well-preserved secret valley, however not remote from lovely villages and art cities like Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Pisa ( Rome too quite accessible).Strada del Ciglio Tuscany 52021
