Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
A beautiful get-away surrounded by nature on a cacao farm! One-bedroom + loft cabin, full kitchen, bathroom, w/d, sunny lanai, on our Big Island off-grid permaculture farm. Cabin is nestled in a food forest a few hundred feet from a stunning waterfall with swimming hole in a peaceful bamboo grove. One king-size bed in bedroom, two twin beds in loft, which has low ceiling & is accessed by steep narrow stairs. Free entrance to botanic garden. Organic eggs, homemade chocolate at farmstand!

The space
Our goal at Kulike Farm is to create an environment where people live lightly on the land, nestled among the food and medicine they need for sustenance. We strive towards energy and food independence with a great variety and abundance of edible tropical foods.

Guest access
Guests have access to walking down to the waterfall and several loops through mixed tropical fruit planting and short trails into the food forest. Guests can take a general farm tour, learning about our off-grid systems and regenerative farming.

Other things to note
* Our pricing is set so the base price is for two guests; additional guests are $15 each per night (children under 2 are free).
* We provide many items to make your stay comfortable, from organic coffee and a French press to first aid supplies. We will send a list of all Hale (aka home) amenities so you know exactly what you'll need.
* All cleaning products are nontoxic.
* We are on the rainy side - on purpose - water is vital! But do be prepared for rain during some portion of your stay.
* There is a 2-mile, winding, narrow drive up a paved road to find us.
* The 14.41% Hawaii State Transient Accommodation tax is included in our total price. (Other listings may add this price on top of the per-night fee, and collect it separately.) Our airbnb cabin is permitted and completely legal within the new Hawaii regulations.

Neighborhood highlights

We live up mauka - towards the mountain - in a lush, green rural area between the Umauma and Hakalau Rivers. At the base of our hill is Botanical World Adventures, which has beautiful gardens and a fun zipline. Umauma Zip Line is also at the base of our hill, just to the north. We have views of both the ocean and Mauna Kea. Soft trade breezes grace us by day, and a cooler breeze blows down off the mountain in the evening. When the clouds part at night, the sky is alive with stars.

Choosing Forest Hale is choosing to be in a farm environment, off the beaten path, with roosters crowing, ducks quacking, and bugs! Sometimes a weedwhacker or chainsaw is going during the day; and definitely the coquis are loud at night. We hope you will be comfortable and most people are, as you can see from the delightful reviews we get, but we do want to be upfront that this is not a sterile environment!

Every Tuesday the local farmers have a great farmer's market on a nearby road, complete with ready-to-eat food, local fruits and drinks. Two beach parks are nearby, Hakalau (currently closed to cars) and Kole Kole, fun to explore on foot. Honomu, the closest town with services (small convenience stores, cafes, gift shops and boutiques), is around 5 miles south, and here you can also visit the stunning Akaka Falls, and go on a short hike. The Papa'aloa Country Store and Cafe are 15 minutes to the north, just before Laupahoehoe, which is where you will find the closest gas station, another convenience store, an outdoor pool, small library, and beautiful beach park at Laupahoehoe Point. Hilo, which is 25 minutes south, has great restaurants, black sand beaches including a perfect protected keiki (kids') beach, museums, the University, a vibrant farmer's market, and much more.
