The studio is in a working 1890’s German bank barn with horses, chickens and a rescue dog. The farm sits 7 1/2 miles from the charming town of Staunton. There are no other visible houses. In the spring, fireflies are as amazing as the night sky on a clear night. I try not to add to light pollution and try to be green and organic. Studio not good for children. Read further about mobility concerns. From 11-17-21 through 12-30-21 please only book two weekend night stays.

The space
The space has been carefully decorated combining vintage pieces and modern pieces. There is a colorful, modern vibe, in an old German country bank barn. There is a Dutch door at the main entrance. The floors are not completely level so would recommend house slippers or indoor shoes though I often go barefoot in the space. No outdoor shoes please. Also, because of the hazards of fires in barns, the farm is a smoke free space. There is a kitchen in the studio, but because it is not a contained space and smells carry to all spaces, please do not plan to fry any foods, and only warm up foods or do light cooking that doesn't leave a mess. If you cook, please cover rug with provided drop cloth in drawer with dish rack.

Guest access
The studio is its own space. There is a storage closet in it for linens and supplies that is private. Guests are welcome to walk around farm, but not under the barn where the animals stay. This is for safety reasons.

Other things to note
Staying in a working barn is a unique experience, but it is a working barn. There are animals under the barn’s main level. It’s like having close neighbors, but they are chickens (no roosters), horses, and dogs. The studio itself is not a good space for anyone who has mobility concerns. The bed is high as is the claw foot bathtub. The water heater is exposed like in some old black and white movie, due to building complications. The staircase is circular. There is a floor beam one must walk over. But as a result, there is nothing cookie cutter about the studio. The barn’s 1890’s charm shines through. Before I bought the farm, I was a teacher in Samoa, Hungary (Fulbright), Korea, India and VA. The old farmhouse is filled with eclectic items from around the world. Now I am content in being a farmer, or at least giving it my best shot. It is sometimes an incredible challenge, but I guess that is what I wanted. There is nothing dull about the challenge. There is plenty of opportunity to be creative and there is so much work, one could never be bored. I am living my dream.
