This comfortable 1BR is a rare find with inspiring views and close proximity to downtown/restaurants/stores. Lots of space for 2 (plus sleeper couch), full kitchen, laundry & beautiful outdoor space. Bus stops at the corner; 15min to San Francisco.
Our unit, which we've named Bloomers, is within two blocks (or less) of two grocery stores (incl. Whole Foods), several restaurants, coffee shops, a theater and lots more. It is a 15-minute walk from the quaint shops and restaurants of downtown Mill Valley and even spectacular hiking. On our street corner is a bus stop for transit to San Francisco, or, if you have a car, we are about a 15-minute drive from the city.
It is unusual to have this proximity AND a view as most homes/units are situated deeper into the hills and valleys. So while many will have views, very few will have a view within walking distance of so many modern conveniences.
Also, perhaps of interest to music fans is the fact that Mike Bloomfield, a famous blues guitarist, lived in our home in the 70s. Originally, he created the lower unit (that is 'Bloomers,' his nickname) as a recording studio, but never completed it. He used to play with Bob Dylan (locals recall listening to Mike work with Dylan on songs from Like a Rolling Stone in the house), the Butterfield Blues Band and more. Recently, a documentary was released about his life/accomplishments and then Rolling Stone wrote this article 1/2014: (website hidden).
The apartment is self-contained and has even been a full-time residence for people in the past. Coffee, an espresso maker, a selection of teas and electric kettle, makings for oatmeal, cream, a half dozen eggs and even wine are stocked for guest arrivals. There is one parking space available for guests.
Interaction with Guests
Because our home is upstairs, we are 'in the vicinity,' but are very respectful of our guest's privacy. We only interact with people as much as they'd prefer.
This also makes it easy to quickly help our guests should they need anything.
We love that we have everything so close.
Whole Foods, Super Duper (a locals favorite burger joint), frozen yogurt and our video store...yep, we still have one...are within a block of our house and are regular haunts of ours. There is space between the houses here with lots of natural beauty. People who have been in our house say they feel like they are in a tree house. It feels like that to me, too.
I love that we can access anything we need while also being able to walk out our door and down the road onto a path that will lead us deep into open land. Or, if we are just relaxing in the house, we appreciate the wildlife that simply passes by our windows...hummingbirds, deer and fox are commonly seen floating around.
Depending on your planned activities while you're here, you may not even need a vehicle. If you DO have one, we provide one parking space and we are in close proximity (3-5 minutes) of Hwy. 101.
If you are coming without a car, The Marin Airporter (which services SFO only) is a terrific, luxury bus shuttle from the airport. Stopping at the Manzanita stop, they will even arrange taxi service to the house (for an additional fee). The bus stop providing service to San Francisco is on our street corner. Ferry service is a 10-minute drive, depending on time of day.
Other Things to Note
We have recently renovated the apartment specifically for short-term rentals. It's extremely clean with all new, or gently-used furniture. It's comfortable and nicely appointed with modern fixtures.
People who have stayed have at Bloomers have been surprised at the outdoor beauty, and the decks and then are thrilled when they actually see the inside of the apartment. It's very relaxing and is a great place for a retreat while also being convenient.
Overall, I'd say we're pretty flexible, but a few expectations we have of our guests are:
-Please, no smoking indoors or out. We have spent a lot of effort making the apartment enjoyable and sadly, smoke does eek in (even from the outside). We had a former tenant who smoked outside and it required a lot of extra work to eradicate the smell.
-Be respectful of the things in the apartment and leave behind what isn't yours.
-Be respectful of your neighbors by not causing noise pollution. Everyone appreciates a good time, but not if it creates a bad time for everyone else around.
-Wine is provided. The policy is take a bottle, leave a bottle.
Host was great, even though she was out of the country. She arranged to have caring and responsible people available to attend to any of our needs. The apartment was delightful and just as she described. Everything essential for a comfortable stay was provided above and beyond what might be expected. I would definitely recommend this apartment.
Great first experience with Airbnb! The apartment is just like the pictures - super cute and clean! Location is great - far enough to avoid the city noise but close enough to make an easy commute back and forth. My mom and I didn't get to meet Dawn, but she had everything arranged perfectly for our stay. Her friends, Ingrid & Forest, were our hosts while we were there and they were both extremely pleasant and accommodating. I would definitely go back!
My husband and I were thrilled with our stay here. The apartment was warm, inviting and well laid out. The hosts were friendly and responded quickly to any emails prior to our stay. The photos were accurate - if not able to truly capture how wonderful the apartment really is on the inside. Stunning views with two porches to relax on.
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking to stay in the Mill Valley area. The location is within walking distance to several great restaurants and a quick drive to even more.
Dawn and Ron were wonderful hosts! We were welcomed with flowers on the counter, fresh organic milk for our coffee, and absolutely gorgeous weather! The place is just as pictured and everything was so comfortable - especially the couch! I worked from that couch for several hours and never wanted to leave. My favorite part - the fireplace. A gas fireplace with radiant stones instead of fake logs - I want one for my own home now!
Great little spot! I live in SF but needed to get away from the city. Very convenient location in you are traveling on your own, with a Whole Foods within walking distance. Hiking Mt. tam was super easy, only a 15min drive away. Dawn was super sweet and the apartment was in perfect shape. Fully outfitted kitchen, too--I cooked almost every day!
Walking into this stunning apartment is when it hit my husband and I that we where finally on vacation. The pictures do not do this place justice. Some of our favorites:
The view is incredible with watching the sun set over the mountains. The cute patio was perfect to relax on and get some knitting done.
The Kitchen with all the essentials, Dawn even provided oatmeal with fixing
The quality of bedding! This may seem silly to some but, my husband and I really appreciated it.
All communication with Dawn was easy. From setting up time of arrival, directions, and answering of questions. Dawn has a great binder in the apartment with all the information one needs to know about the apartment and surrounding area including take-out menus. After My husband I got settled in Dawn came to welcome us and make sure we didn't have any questions. (But she had her personal information available to us on a welcome board in the apartment if anything came up.) As we where talking it came out that my husband and I are chefs and came to San Francisco not only to sight see but to check out the food scene. Later that evening she e-mailed me a great local food article from a local magazine.
My husband and I only had a week but we planned out sight seeing around locations of restaurants. Mill Valley has a great food scene two of our favorite restaurants where Molina, where the menu is written daily along with their music play list on the back for the evening, and Bungalow 44 where the atmosphere is relaxing, great wine, and the most lovely braised short ribs with swiss chard.
Mill Valley was a perfect location for us, we had great food, amazing golf courses, and it was between wine country and the city. You get the best of both worlds!
I highly recommend this hidden gem!
We loved our one month stay in Dawn's apartment. It was ewxactly as in the photo's. Great view, spotless and fully equiped. We cook often and the kitchen had everything we needed. The fireplace was welcome on cool evenings. The location wasw excellent. Close to the city, Napa and Sonoma and a lot of good hiking. Dawn is delightful and very helpful. Offered to print our boarding passes when we left. We couldn't ask for a nicer stay and would recommend her apartment without reservation.
My husband, Ron, and I have lived in Mill Valley (and in this house) for 7 years. We have two children, Finn (9) and Lucy (6).
I have a small Public Relations firm of my own, Potion Public Relations, and I work just down the street in a small office. Ron works for Alexa Internet, located in the Presidio in San Francisco.
We are both passionate travelers, but have admittedly traveled less since our kids were born. In the past, we've been to Southeast Asia, Australia, Cuba, parts of Europe and domestic destinations. Some of our family is back east, so it isn't unusual for us to visit Delaware or New York on an annual basis.
Music is a big interest of ours (which is a big reason we love Mill Valley -- if you haven't seen our profile and the information regarding Mike Bloomfield, check it out!). We got married in New Orleans and if we get the chance, make it out to see our favorite bands in San Francisco or here, at the famous Sweetwater Lounge.
Overall, we're a mellow family who appreciates the little things.
