About this listing

This comfortable 1BR is a rare find with inspiring views and close proximity to downtown/restaurants/stores. Lots of space for 2 (plus sleeper couch), full kitchen, laundry & beautiful outdoor space. Bus stops at the corner; 15min to San Francisco.

The space

Our unit, which we've named Bloomers, is a quaint little private apartment with a full kitchen and a queen bed. It is within two blocks (or less) of two grocery stores (incl. Whole Foods), several restaurants, coffee shops, a theater and lots more. It is a 15-minute walk from the quaint shops and restaurants of downtown Mill Valley and even spectacular hiking. On our street corner is a bus stop for transit to San Francisco, or, if you have a car, we are about a 15-minute drive from the city.

It is unusual to have this proximity AND a view as most homes/units are situated deeper into the hills and valleys. So while many will have views, very few will have a view within walking distance of so many conveniences. All this said, it's important to keep in mind that we are on the corner of a main thoroughfare into downtown; Miller Avenue. While we are surrounded by greenery and in general, it is peaceful, we will get road (URL HIDDEN) occasional Harley, loud truck/car, or honking. I suppose it's the price we pay for the proximity to the conveniences we enjoy...but, if you are looking for absolute silence, this may not be your place.

Also, perhaps of interest to music fans is the fact that Mike Bloomfield, a famous blues guitarist, lived in our home in the 70s. Originally, he created the lower unit (that is 'Bloomers,' his nickname) as a recording studio, but never completed it. He used to play with Bob Dylan (locals recall listening to Mike work with Dylan on songs from Like a Rolling Stone in our house), the Butterfield Blues Band and more. Recently, a documentary was released about his life/accomplishments and then Rolling Stone wrote this article 1/2014.

Guest access

The apartment is self-contained and has even been a full-time residence for our family and au pairs in the past. Coffee, a selection of teas and electric kettle, makings for oatmeal, cream, a half dozen eggs and even wine are stocked for guest arrivals. There is one parking space available for guests.

Interaction with guests

Because our home is upstairs, we are 'in the vicinity,' but are very respectful of our guest's privacy. We only interact with people as much as they'd prefer.

This also makes it easy to quickly help our guests should they need anything.

Other things to note

We renovated this apartment specifically for short-term rentals. It's extremely clean with all new, or gently-used furniture. It's comfortable and nicely appointed with modern fixtures.

People who have stayed have at Bloomers have been surprised at the outdoor beauty, and the decks and then are thrilled when they actually see the inside of the apartment. It's very relaxing and is a great place for a little getaway while also being convenient.

Overall, I'd say we're pretty flexible, but a few expectations we have of our guests are:

-Please, no smoking indoors or out. We have spent a lot of effort making the apartment enjoyable and sadly, smoke does eek in (even from the outside). We had a former tenant who smoked outside and it required a lot of extra work to eradicate the smell.
-Be respectful of the things in the apartment and leave behind what isn't yours.
-Be respectful of your neighbors by not causing noise pollution. Everyone appreciates a good time, but not if it creates a bad time for everyone else around.
-Wine is provided. The policy is take a bottle, leave a bottle.

Dawn's unit is an amazing cliff side unit with a beautiful view of Mt. Tam and Mill Valley. Sunsets and sunrises here were one of the best amenities each day and made or stay magical! My wife and I were very pleased with the cleanliness and sleek decor of the unit and the thought Dawn put into things like having wine, coffee, eggs, cream, etc. available for us in the unit. Dawn is an amazing host who is extremely accessible and helps make a stay enjoyable and simple. We will definitely be back next time we are in the Bay Area!

Thanks for a lovely stay in your guest quarters. It was just perfect! You had all our needs covered for breakfast and in the evening wine to enjoy on the delightful deck, if we hadn't had our own. What a lovely way to end the day sipping wine on the deck and enjoying your view. Your instructions were easy to follow and answered every question before we asked it. The convenience to everything in Mill Valley (a delightful town) and to Sausalito were wonderful - hard to tell where one town ended and the next began. Everything was clean and minimalist as well as comfortable and inviting. The driveway up was steep and daunting, and we appreciate your alerting us to this. Walking the 10 feet or so from the car down the driveway to the entrance to the apartment with our luggage was a little challenging but manageable. It could be hazardous for someone with a handicap or disability. If and when we plan another trip to your area, we'll definitely check with you first to secure a reservation for your accommodations. We had a fine time and your place worked out perfectly for us! Thank you for allowing us to stay - we enjoyed meeting you and hope to visit and stay with you again some day.

Pictures are very accurate, very California furnishings. Tucked away in your private hideaway that is very comfortable and inviting. Great access to Stinson Beach, Sausalito and San Francisco, grocery shopping and restaurants. Dawn was a gracious host, accommodating and friendly. Would recommend highly for anyone wanting to see San Francisco without staying in the craziness of being in the city.

The apartment is very clean and comfortable, just as advertised. Of course, the view is wonderful and we absolutely loved how bright and airy the place is because of the huge windows (one morning we even saw a deer right outside one of the windows)! The shower water pressure is excellent. My complaint would be that there's no hood over the gas range and for better viewing, there's no window screen over the large windows. When we were cooking a couple of chicken legs in the nice Calphalon pan, we only opened the window closest to the kitchen and that was not sufficient to ventilate the place. The smoke alarm went off and we quickly opened all windows and doors, and luckily not too many insects came in. It will be helpful to have one of those fans designed to draw air in or exhaust air out through the windows.

Response from Dawn:
Thank you so much, Susan, for your comments. Also, couldn't agree more about the ventilation...we considered that at the time we were renovating the apartment. Unfortunately, because our living room floor is directly above the kitchen in the apartment, it would have required major construction on both our house AND the apartment, so we had to take that consideration off the table. Thank you for your patience, however, with that challenge. It is a good note for me to inform guests in the future! Thanks so much for staying with us.

Bloomers was such an amazing place to stay on our trip! One of a kind amazing views! My wife and I loved being able to wake up to the mountains every morning and eating dinner on the patio. We also loved the amazing gas fire place! The owner Dawn is extremely accommodating and kind, she had a few grocery items in the fridge & oatmeal on the counter. Would definitely stay here again, wonderful experience & place!

We did not want to leave! Dawn's apartment is perfectly situated and amazingly cozy. We came for the hiking but loved having such a comfortable apartment (where we could appreciate the scenery from a distance) to retreat to at the end of the day. Highly recommend.

My husband, Ron, and I have lived in Mill Valley (and in this house) for 7 years. We have two children, Finn (11) and Lucy (8).

I have a small Public Relations firm of my own, Potion Public Relations, and I work just down the street in a small office. Ron works for Alexa Internet, located in San Francisco's financial district.

We are both passionate travelers, but have admittedly traveled less since our kids were born. In the past, we've been to Southeast Asia, Australia, Cuba, parts of Europe and domestic destinations. Some of our family is back east, so it isn't unusual for us to visit Delaware or New York on an annual basis.

Music is a big interest of ours (which is a big reason we love Mill Valley -- if you haven't seen our profile and the information regarding Mike Bloomfield, check it out!). We got married in New Orleans and if we get the chance, make it out to see our favorite bands in San Francisco or here, at the famous Sweetwater Lounge.

Overall, we're a mellow family who appreciates the little things.
