About this listing
This comfortable 1BR is a rare find with inspiring views and close proximity to downtown/restaurants/stores. Lots of space for 2 (plus sleeper couch), full kitchen, laundry & beautiful outdoor space. Bus stops at the corner; 15min to San Francisco.
Our unit, which we've named Bloomers, is within two blocks (or less) of two grocery stores (incl. Whole Foods), several restaurants, coffee shops, a theater and lots more. It is a 15-minute walk from the quaint shops and restaurants of downtown Mill Valley and even spectacular hiking. On our street corner is a bus stop for transit to San Francisco, or, if you have a car, we are about a 15-minute drive from the city.
It is unusual to have this proximity AND a view as most homes/units are situated deeper into the hills and valleys. So while many will have views, very few will have a view within walking distance of so many modern conveniences.
Also, perhaps of interest to music fans is the fact that Mike Bloomfield, a famous blues guitarist, lived in our home in the 70s. Originally, he created the lower unit (that is 'Bloomers,' his nickname) as a recording studio, but never completed it. He used to play with Bob Dylan (locals recall listening to Mike work with Dylan on songs from Like a Rolling Stone in the house), the Butterfield Blues Band and more. Recently, a documentary was released about his life/accomplishments and then Rolling Stone wrote this article 1/2014: (website hidden).
The apartment is self-contained and has even been a full-time residence for people in the past. Coffee, an espresso maker, a selection of teas and electric kettle, makings for oatmeal, cream, a half dozen eggs and even wine are stocked for guest arrivals. There is one parking space available for guests.
Interaction with Guests
Because our home is upstairs, we are 'in the vicinity,' but are very respectful of our guest's privacy. We only interact with people as much as they'd prefer.
This also makes it easy to quickly help our guests should they need anything.
We love that we have everything so close.
Whole Foods, Super Duper (a locals favorite burger joint), frozen yogurt and our video store...yep, we still have one...are within a block of our house and are regular haunts of ours. There is space between the houses here with lots of natural beauty. People who have been in our house say they feel like they are in a tree house. It feels like that to me, too.
I love that we can access anything we need while also being able to walk out our door and down the road onto a path that will lead us deep into open land. Or, if we are just relaxing in the house, we appreciate the wildlife that simply passes by our windows...hummingbirds, deer and fox are commonly seen floating around.
Depending on your planned activities while you're here, you may not even need a vehicle. If you DO have one, we provide one parking space and we are in close proximity (3-5 minutes) of Hwy. 101.
If you are coming without a car, The Marin Airporter (which services SFO only) is a terrific, luxury bus shuttle from the airport. Stopping at the Manzanita stop, they will even arrange taxi service to the house (for an additional fee). The bus stop providing service to San Francisco is on our street corner. Ferry service is a 10-minute drive, depending on time of day.
Other Things to Note
We have recently renovated the apartment specifically for short-term rentals. It's extremely clean with all new, or gently-used furniture. It's comfortable and nicely appointed with modern fixtures.
People who have stayed have at Bloomers have been surprised at the outdoor beauty, and the decks and then are thrilled when they actually see the inside of the apartment. It's very relaxing and is a great place for a retreat while also being convenient.
Overall, I'd say we're pretty flexible, but a few expectations we have of our guests are:
-Please, no smoking indoors or out. We have spent a lot of effort making the apartment enjoyable and sadly, smoke does eek in (even from the outside). We had a former tenant who smoked outside and it required a lot of extra work to eradicate the smell.
-Be respectful of the things in the apartment and leave behind what isn't yours.
-Be respectful of your neighbors by not causing noise pollution. Everyone appreciates a good time, but not if it creates a bad time for everyone else around.
-Wine is provided. The policy is take a bottle, leave a bottle.
About the Host, Dawn
My husband, Ron, and I have lived in Mill Valley (and in this house) for 7 years. We have two children, Finn (9) and Lucy (6).
I have a small Public Relations firm of my own, Potion Public Relations, and I work just down the street in a small office. Ron works for Alexa Internet, located in the Presidio in San Francisco.
We are both passionate travelers, but have admittedly traveled less since our kids were born. In the past, we've been to Southeast Asia, Australia, Cuba, parts of Europe and domestic destinations. Some of our family is back east, so it isn't unusual for us to visit Delaware or New York on an annual basis.
Music is a big interest of ours (which is a big reason we love Mill Valley -- if you haven't seen our profile and the information regarding Mike Bloomfield, check it out!). We got married in New Orleans and if we get the chance, make it out to see our favorite bands in San Francisco or here, at the famous Sweetwater Lounge.
Overall, we're a mellow family who appreciates the little things.
