We're really glad we staid In Santa Tereza, we found the area the nicest in town. Marjon's house is absolutely beautiful and gave us a really authentic taste of Rio and it's surrounding neighbourhoods. The double level apartment is situated amongst the most luscious landscape we've visited with monkeys and toucans all around. Theirs always a bus to town and the stop is just outside the front door - really handy! Marjon was extremely helpful throughout and gave us guidance and advice on anything we needed. A lovely stay and very highly recommended.
Marjon went out of her way to make us feel welcome and gave us the lowdown. The house was amazing - overlooking the mountains with stunning. The area itself has lots to offer and it is also extremely well placed for exploring Rio. It was like being in a national park in the centre of the city. We also felt perfectly safe. Highly recommended!!
A beautiful apartment (particularly the open kitchen) with a great view of Christ the redeemer. Easy to get the bus into the centre of Santa Teresa. Marjon very helpful and communicative.
Our stay at Marjon's place was excellent, thank you so much! The house is such a lovely place, with the best view possible and everything you need for a relaxed stay. The neighborhood, Santa Teresa, is awesome and the location couldn't be better. The bus connection is perfect, with a bus stop right in front of the door. Marjon was also very quick in answering any questions, always ready to help and very very nice. Thanks so much for making our stay so pleasant!
Marjon was an outstanding host. She made us feel very welcome and provided recommendations for places to go in the city. Also she is an animal lover and had a litter of kittens roaming around the property that was a bonus. The flat was exactly as pictured. Truly a unique place. The only downsides to this listing are the following: The flat is up in the hills above the village of Santa Theresa and pretty far away from the tourist areas of Rio. The views are great but we had great difficulty getting cabs to come to the address. The first night there Marjon called 3 companies and none would come to the address. Once we were out in the city we then had the same problem getting a cab to take us back- they would just refuse or say they did not have enough gas to get there etc. There is a bus stop close by that takes you down the hill but Rio buses are not for the faint of heart. They are crowded, un-air conditioned, and feel like a roller coaster. If you want to get to the beaches you will need to take multiple buses or a bus to then hail a cab. The kitchen is open air and the upstairs bedroom has a ceiling fan with wall to wall doors that open to a terrace but no air conditioning. In the heat of the summer when we were there it was very hot and humid.
The location is great, I would recommend it to anybody who wants to stay away from the crowds of Copacabana. Marjon is very friendly and helpful. The access to the city, though may seem difficult at arrival you will quickly see that the buses are running like every 5 min and the location is not far from the main attractions. We loved the view and the greenery around, we even saw the monkeys in the first day. Though there are fans in every room I believe an air con would help, it was tough in the first and second night, then we were lucky because it got cooler outside.

Passionate journalist since 37 years. Born in Amsterdam, I lived in different parts of the world. Ten years in Italy, Bosnia (yes during the war), and Mexico.
Since 15 years in the bohemian Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Although I travel all over Latin America, this magical place is forever my home.
I just finished building this guest house at the top of my garden. A dream I had for years: to create a tasteful and cosy house, so other people can savour the place I love most in the world.
If you want I can be a source of tips for alternative places to visit and hang out, including favelas. Places I deeply love, and often frequent.
Ah yes: I have two (very sweet) dogs and a bunch of cats. (They don't come in your house. No worry.)
This year I will be at home a lot because of the World Cup, and a book I have to finish writing.
That's me, for now.
