Hidden Jungle Beach House: where nature lovers can socialize around the kitchen table or enjoy solitude in a quiet spot on a hammock.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the chattering of a million tropical birds.
Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room, I'm the owner, Lisa, and I live here, too.
The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. The shared bathroom with a hot shower is on the first floor.
The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four bedrooms and a living room with cable TV. It also has a shared bathroom with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple and small. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes, shelves, desk or table and chair, mosquito nets and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels.
We are a simple place: The windows have screens but we use mosquito nets, too; no A/C just fans and jungle breezes. We love animals. We have two German shepherds (and a cat) to guard the house and entertain the guests. Smoking cigarettes is allowed only outdoors in the yard.
Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.

I am Lisa, the owner, and I live here, too! I am most always around - accessible for questions or help.
I'm a writer with a website telling you all about my experiences living in Costa Rica for seven years. I'll give you all the details on your options to get here from the airport, along with photos and instructions. I can book your transportation and I also offer personal guide service. Once you have made your reservation, Airbnb will allow me to give you the link to my website.
When you arrive I give a little tour of the place, showing you where everything is. I am happy to give guidance or recommendations and help you find what you need.
Life in the jungle! Our closest neighbors are sloths, often seen in the trees just outside our windows. Stunning Blue Morpho butterflies and colorful hummingbirds flit by as you sit on the patio. The mornings are chirpy and bright with a million melodic bird songs. Afternoons are quiet and peaceful under the cool of the jungle canopy. And the evenings are exotic with the heady fragrance of jasmine, white ginger and ylang ylang and the curious calls of our nocturnal animal friends. This is truly the place to refresh the mind, nurture the soul and release the stress of everyday living.
It is easy to get here. From the airport you can take a bus, a private shuttle, a rental car or you can even take a rafting trip! I'll give you all the details and book your transportation, if you like.
Once you are here you can access most everything on foot or by bike. The public bus system works well and there are taxis at your disposal.
Other Things to Note
IF YOU HAVE A CAR: If you are coming by car, please let me know at the time you make your reservation. Parking is limited so I have to make sure there is space for you. Thanks!
DOGS: We have two German Shep
herd guard dogs. They are very sweet. They do not bite. But they do bark to protect the property from intruders. When you arrive the dogs will greet you as part of the family. Most all of my guest love our dogs and the dogs love the guests as well.
COUPLES: Our place is small and the four rooms are close together. You will have complete visual/physical privacy but you may not have the audio privacy that some couples prefer. Noise at the level of quiet normal conversation is not heard by others in the next room but our walls are not soundproof.
1. Window shutters and doors must be locked when you leave the premises.
2. Smoking allowed only out in the front yard.
3. Quiet before 9:00 a.m. and after 10:00 p.m.
4. No outside guests allowed without advance reservations. Reservations for having an extra guest in your room must be made in advance. This is solely for security reasons.
Being at Lisa's place has been an extraordinary experience. Close to the ocean, it is regardless a very quiet and beautiful place. Lisa and Cristian has been very nice hosts : we even stayed one more night to enjoy the surroundings.
Thanks so much !
Lisa's jungle hideaway was everything I anticipated and more. Privacy from the main road but easy access to it and the beautiful La Playa Negra (prettiest black volcanic sand ever) and La playa Cocles. The jungle home was very open (some places such as the kitchen and bathroom did not have windows that closed) but it didn't bother me any. As long as you have bug spray on at night, you will not be bothered by the bugs. Rooms provide mosquito nets but our room did not need one because of screens on the windows. The openness was protected with a locked gate and fence around the big yard so we felt 100% safe and secure. Her dogs were friendly and also made us feel safe. Our room was pretty and small with a beautiful view of the jungle awaiting us each morning. Lisa provided a storage bin in the fridge and on a shelf for food so that things would not be mixed up with others. The shower also had individual storage bins. Lisa was beyond helpful and gave us good recommendations for restaurants, shopping and places to see. I must note that every restaurant we ate at was DELICIOUS! Interaction with the other guests was frequent, but we enjoy being social and go out of our way to meet people from around the world. We were happy travelers and staying at Lisa's made our jungle experience much more authentic!
Lisa's hidden jungle house was sweet, very clean and organized and within walking distance of Puerto Viejo and the beach. The kitchen is well equipped and Lisa was very helpful with information. One concern we had is that calling it a "couples" jungle house is a misnomer; there is no privacy at all that calling a room for couples would indicate.
Sorry for the confusion, Loren. And thank you for your nice comments.
The reason I use the word "couples" is that the pricing is different for a single person than for two people who share a room. So I had to call two of my Airbnb pages "couples" and two "singles" in order to make the pricing distinction. I suppose I might have said "two people" instead of "couples" but Airbnb does not give enough space for that many letters in the title.
Yes, although there is complete physical / visual privacy, there is not much audio privacy. It is a small house with all 4 rooms in close proximity and the walls are not soundproof.
That being said, I never promoted any kind of "couples retreat" and actually when I have inquiries from honeymoon couples, I tell them the set up so they know in advance. You are the first one who interpreted the word "couples" to mean that the room would avail any kind of romantic retreat or setting. I have had couples stay with us who are just friends - two women friends for example, that wanted to save money by sharing a bed. Still, I will consider your opinion and make a note in the details regarding my rooms for two people that the rooms are not necessarily as private as some couples might prefer. Thanks for your input.
My sister and I just had the pleasure of staying 4 nights at the fabulous hidden jungle guesthouse. The pictures depict it perfectly and the location cannot be beat (across the road from Playa Negra, -5 minutes walk to puerto Viejo centre, bars, restaurants etc). The kitchen is sufficient for making meals if you prefer to stay in and the wifi worked great. The guesthouse had plenty of hammocks and seats which were perfect for reading or relaxing. Lisa herself was extremely friendly, informative and attentive as a host and had plenty of local knowledge which will assist with planning aspects of your daily activities. There were two lovely dogs on the property who make great company! If you're looking for affordable, safe and enjoyable accommodation on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica I cannot recommend Lisa enough! Thank you so much for our delightful stay!
Lisa and the hidden jungle beach house was a great place to stay to end our backpacking trip. She was able to accommodate four people add well as myself. We got to see a sloth within minutes of checking in outside the window. Lisa was a helpful host who was always easy to find on the property if you had questions or needed anything.
Lisa's Hidden Jungle Beach House is a great little spot where you can relax in peace and quiet. The place is very well kept, clean and well organized. I'd recommend this place for anyone looking for a chilled out experience of Puerto Viejo.
Thank you, Andrew. Yes, we have a nice quiet place - other than the sound of the ocean waves, the frogs, insects, millions of birds, howler monkeys and various other jungle animals. But most people, like you, feel that those sounds add to the tranquility. Thank you for your visit.

I’m Lisa Valencia, a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007.
I believe in following your dreams and living life to the absolute fullest. I believe in giving without regard to what you get. I try to find the balance between being in the moment and planning for the future. I work on keeping judgment in abeyance. And I am thankful, grateful and appreciative of almost every little thing in every moment of life.
One of my greatest feats, since moving to Costa Rica has been that of learning to reinvent myself. In the past I worked as a mural artist and an interior designer. I’ve continued my art work in Costa Rica, but only to a minor extent. To my own surprise my creativity took a turn to the literary, as I recounted my Costa Rica new life experiences to my friends. In September of 2009, I wrote a book about my first two years in Costa Rica, coming here as a woman alone. My book, “If She Can Do It, So Can I!” is available on my website as an AUDIO BOOK an EBOOK and the paperback version is available from Amazon.
My love for literacy and language sparked another idea. I became certified to teach English as a second language and taught locally for a year. As my writing continued it stimulated more reinvention. Due to readers extensive inquiries about Costa Rica living, I developed a Guide Service and a Consultation Service for those interested in Costa Rica.
Three years ago life brought another new way to share my Costa Rica experiences and to reinvent myself. I am the happy owner of a sweet little guest house in the jungle. Although I carry on my guiding and consultation, my realm of service has extended to providing lodging at Hidden Jungle Beach House. It seems things have come full circle. My book was written to inspire others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Now I can help those who dream of travel to Costa Rica by providing guidance and an economical place to start their own adventure.
