Lovely, rustic, and unique little home. Great for 2. Surrounded by trees, gardens, year round creek running thru property; an oasis in this high valley desert. Come enjoy nature! Sunny, plant filled bedroom has 2 beds: 1 double, 1 single. Open floor plan bathroom between the bedroom and kitchen. Fun Cowboy theme entry sitting room with antique wood stove. Woodsy seating areas and creek side sitting spots available to all.

Handmade home with many artistic touches and custom art work. Surrounded in forest and filled with the sounds of the creek and birds. A woodsy retreat from busy living. Fun Cowboy themed entry and sitting room with antique wood stove and museum style decor. This listing and property does not accept smoking (of anything), pets, or children under 12 yrs. The small sun room / bedroom is decorated with mexican and south american fiber art, pottery and paintings. It like a mini trip south of the border! This room has 2 beds: one single, one double. The open floor plan bathroom has a small corner toilet space with wooden louvered door for privacy. The space is great for 1 or 2 folks.
There is solar in floor heat and ceramic wall panel heaters as well as an electric radiator style portable heater near the work space desk. There are insulated window shades in the bedroom area. There is a ceiling fan for air cooling and circulation. The Antique woodstove can be used in the cowboy sitting room, and this room also has a small portable heater for use when you are present in the room.
Outside in your private front door patio area there is a hammock, an outdoor fireplace and a sandstone table and benches for meals in warm weather. Unfortunately, we do not accept pets of any kind for any reason.

Enjoy the creek, woods and nature seating areas on the property. Walk the surrounding dirt roads for fantastic mountain, desert and sand dunes views. Trails and roads from the Garden House lead to National Forest, Great National Sand Dunes as well as the Sangre De Cristo Wilderness area within 1/2 mile.
Guests have exclusive use of their home and front door patio area overlooking the garden. Share the other woods and creek outdoor spaces with land owners and other guests who may have booked other Earth Knack listings. No one else has access to your rented space or front door patio area. Other guests may be using the teepees or cabin and the general outdoor area. We do not accept pets of any kind for any reason.

Other things to note
Wildlife roam the property year round. High winds are common, often creating dusty conditions. Mosquitoes are prevalent mid June through mid July. GPS directions are not always reliable here so please consider printing out the directions available on the Earth Knack web site. As you get close to the mountains, phone reception can go "in and out" as you drive. Recently upgraded WIFI service in the Garden House. Neighbors have outdoor dogs that sometimes come through the property.The roads are maintained well enough for regular cars and motorcycles.(one mile of dirt road before reaching Earth Knack) Due to severe allergies, we do not accept pets of any kind for any reason.

Neighborhood highlights

The area is a sparsely populated residential community and is bordered on all sides by public lands. The population of the town is under 500 (Crestone, 9 miles north) and the entire area under 3,000. Sweeping valley and mountain vistas surround the property and the Garden House itself sits along the banks of a year round creek, just 4 miles from the top of (14,000 + foot) Kit Carson Mountain and many other towering summits of the Sangre De Cristo Range. Hot springs resorts to choose from within a 45 minute to 1 hour drive from the house. The property is great for long walks and hiking. 1/2 mile from forest service land to east and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness area. 1/2 mile to Baca National Wildlife Preserve to South and West, bordering the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Public land to North.
Several hot springs resorts, (Joyful Journey and Sand Dunes Recreation) in the surrounding areas. A 1 1/2 hour drive to Wolf Creek and Monarch ski areas.
Crestone, Alamosa, Del Norte and Saguache all have museums, music venues, shopping, breweries and dining.

ROBIN BLANKENSHIP owns and operates Earth Knack and has been working in the outdoor field since 1978 when she began leading horse packing trips into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness for Adventure Unlimited Ranches, eventually directing their mountaineering program. She began teaching for Larry Olsen’s School of Urban and Wilderness Survival in 1984, the National Outdoor Leadership School and Outward Bound. She holds a B.A. in English Literature, a minor in Spanish from the University of Colorado, Boulder, as well as a B.S. in Education with a Colorado elementary teaching certification. Currently she also "moonlights" as the 4th and 5th grade teacher at the Crestone Charter school, which she helped to establish in 1995. She is the author (and illustrator) of How To Play In The Woods, published in 2016 by Gibbs Smith, Publishers, and co-authored and illustrated Earth Knack Stone Age Skills for the 21st Century, also published by Gibbs Smith in 1996. Robin made a friction fire for Katie Couric on The Today Show, has been featured in publications including Outside Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, The Denver Post, and appeared on Channel 4 news programs in Denver featuring self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyles. All her Air b-n-b listings on the Earth Knack property are self designed and architected, hand built, homemade, alternative and eco-friendly buildings; methods that she also teaches through her Earth Knack programs.
