Just book this place already. The place is even better in-person than in the pictures. The kitchen is well-stocked with basic cooking necessities such as oil, spices, etc. There's even coffee and tea. Nicole provided pasta, sauce, half a dozen eggs, a couple bagels and jam, chips, and fudge.
We took a taxi from Holetown to Serendipity for $70 Barbados and also a taxi to the airport for $80 Barbados. We bought groceries in Holetown and took the taxi straight from the parking lot of the supermarket. We didn't really walk around the neighborhood, but like the other reviews have stated, there doesn't seem to be a lot of facilities around the area. The place is at the end of a road so there was almost no traffic directly in the area. There was a lot of wildlife though, we saw a band of monkeys in the trees on the property, a few birds that seem to hang out around the place, weasels, bats, and even a centipede!
There's always a breeze on the deck and if you open the doors the breeze goes through the inside as well, which makes air conditioning unnecessary. We fell asleep to the sound of the waves and the breeze every night.
Hassle free. Stunning views. Very relaxed. The sounds of the ocean 24 hours a day. Monkeys playing in the garden. You will definitely need a car though!
We'd also recommend the botanical gardens a short car ride away.
Nicole was very friendly and it was a pleasure to stay at her place. The house is situated on a hilltop a short stroll from the sea and there are wonderful views from the terrace where we had breakfast every morning. The apartment has everything you need and is well equipped with utensils, kitchen appliances etc. The bed was very comfortable too.
It is worth noting that the location is quite secluded from the rest of the island where most of the restaurants are located (i.e. Holetown, Bridgetown and Oistins). The upside of it is that it is very clam and quiet and you are close to the nature, the downside is that is that you need to be prepared to drive around if you want to fully explore the island - a car is a definite must. Anyway you should be aware that driving time estimates given by Google Maps should realistically be multiplied by 1.3x-1.5x, as roads in Barbados are quite curvy and have a lot of potholes.
There are two restaurants in the vicinity (about 5 minutes drive) next to Bathsheba beach - Atlantis (which we personally did not like much) and Roundhouse (which we found really lovely with amazing views and nice food in a historic building). Bathsheba beach is quite wild and rough and predominantly used by the surfers, however it has some really cool natural "baths" to sit and soak during low tide and stare at the breaking waves right in front of you.
If you want to eat out other than at the two mentioned restaurants you have to drive to Speightstown or Holetown which would be 25 and 35 minutes drive. You will also find calm sandy beaches there. I would personally highly advice Gibbs Beach which is very nice and not crowded. If you are kitesurfing the best beach for that is Silver Rock located on the south of the island and it is also about 35-40 minutes drive.
Overall I can say that we really enjoyed our stay at Serendipity and the apartment is truly amazing and very tastefully decorated. We did however underestimate how long it takes to drive around, so if you are planning to go out a lot, you should be prepared to spend a couple of hours a day in the car. The big plus is that there is no drink-drive limit in Barbados (although you should still be considerate). Nicole's place is perfect if you want to stay away from the crowds and see the real Barbadian villages and life. Also you will definitely get to see green monkeys and mongoose which are quite abundant in this part of the island.
We arrived very early in the morning and Nicole was so accommodating by letting us check in early. The studio was beautiful, very spacious and had a perfect amount of food in the fridge to get us started. Check in and out was so easy and Nicole was very informative in regards to things to in the area.
Wow, what a place! Gorgeous apartment, really tastefully decorated in a stunning location in Cattlewash on Barbados' tranquil and ruggedly beautiful East coast. We stayed with our two young boys for 3 nights and loved it. Nicole is a wonderful host, super friendly with great attention to detail; from the kitchen stocked with the essentials (incl Banks beers!), extra mattress and sheets for our toddler, and a selection of DVDs to keep us entertained in the evenings as she knew we couldn't go out after the kids' bedtime! If you're looking for a place to stay on the east coast look no further - you won't find anywhere more lovely or better value than Serendipidy!
Our flight arrived at 2:30am and Nicole was available to answer our questions regarding directions (sorry to call so late btw Nicole)! The photos do not do this place justice. It was beyond our expectations! The view, the sounds of the crashing waves combined with the silence of the neighborhood was exactly what we envisioned. Different from the West coast, Cattlewash is sprinkled with homes here and there in the hills and along the main road. Nicole's home is literally a 5 minute walk down the hill to the beach. Being the last house at the top of the hill you are guaranteed spectacular views, privacy and peace of mind.
The refrigerator was stocked with fresh fruit, eggs, milk, juice and local beers. Plenty of pots/pans to make a delicious meal as well.
The bar/deck area is phenomenal! Imagine waking up with the sound of the waves to catch the sunrise, only to stumble a few steps in your sleepiness to lay on either the sofa or one of the comfy Adirondack chairs just to fall asleep again.
If heading out for the day, walk down the hill to the main road and look for the bus stop either heading towards Speightsown/Bridgetown etc. Or take a quick ride the other direction to the Atlantic Hotel for a killer view above the sea and land below.
In regards to the comments about the dogs. Um..they're dogs. We heard no noise from them unless there was someone coming up the drive-way..usually us. We left them some lamb bones... might want to keep that in mind :)
Nicole sent us on our way with a lovely farewell gift of Champagne and postcards from local artists.
IDK if that is the norm for everyone. But man she set the bar very high and we are hooked!
Thank you for sharing your home Nicole!
About the Host, Nicole
Born in Barbados, I have an undying love for the intimacy of the Island and my West Indian culture and heritage. Barbadians by nature are open, thoughtful and generous with a disarming innocence and charm and you will quickly feel at home...it truly is the Gem of the Caribbean with its beautiful beaches, quaint chattel houses, lush sugar cane fields and rugged coastlines....with a fantastic view from Serendipity. The East Coast of the Island has always been a favorite of mine and happy to now call it home. I am a peaceful Piscean who is happiest in the midst of my three beautiful blessings. I love the outdoors and enjoy spending family time discovering “hidden spots” just on the outskirts of our home on the beautiful East Coast.“Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles, it empties today of its strength.” ~ Corrie ten Boom
