The kitchen opens directly into the dining room, with a rustic pine farmer's table which sits 8 comfortably. The sunlit living room features a Plasma TV and DVD player. Furnishings include one-of-a-kind antiques and contemporary pieces by some of the finest Vermont artisans. There is a full bathroom with a large, tiled walk-in shower.

Neighborhood highlights

The property is located on 4.5 acres in Wolcott with superb 360 degree views of farmlands, woodlands, meadows, and the nearby Mount Mansfield range. Wolcott and its surrounding environs have become a model for sustainable living, with organic farms, artisanal food, and farmers' markets. The schoolhouse itself is a half-hour drive to Stowe and about an hour's drive to three other superb skiing locations: Burke, Smuggler's Notch, and Jay Peak. Stowe is the closest, and definitely worth paying a visit.

In Winter you can ski (cross-country and downhill), snowboard, snowshoe, or stay indoors to read, write and cozy up with a cup of hot chocolate. In Spring and Summer you can swim, hike, bike, fish, then come home and enjoy a barbecue on the front deck; in Fall, you can explore the changing foliage, farmer's markets, and the fine food at local restaurants in nearby towns. In short, the schoolhouse offers a glorious retreat from hectic city life.

I am a psychotherapist and writer living in New York City and, as much as I can, in Vermont, one of the most beautiful and compelling states in the U.S. I have spent time in Vermont since childhood and grown to love it more and more. The schoolhouse is my second Vermont home and is indeed my sanctuary; my hope, for the time you visit, is that it will be yours as well.
