Interaction with Guests
Come and go as you please. We hope you have time to meet us in the gallery or cafe but your privacy will be respected. After we close you will have the grounds to yourself and Ernest the Goat (in his own enclosure of course).
Very quiet village at night. Most eating places are closed by 9pm. There are 2 small stores and gas stations, a hardware/general store and post office. Don't miss the Sunday Farmers Market from 6am till 10am at Cooper Center on Wright Road. Get there early!
There are buses that run to Hilo and back but very limited and they DO NOT go to the airports. Rental cars are the only way to go unless you feel like hitch-hiking (not such a good idea).
Other Things to Note
Nights can be chilly here at 4000 feet, bring long sleeve sweater, socks, shoes. Go see the glowing volcano at night but dress warm, it can get windy up at the crater. Don't worry, your room has a heater and electric blanket.
No smoking in any buildings please. Please inquire about bringing a pet or service animal. Payment in full is requested to hold room. Call us with any questions at (phone number hidden). Cancellation policy: Greater than 30 days full refund minus 15% processing fee. 29 to 15 days before arrival 50% refund. Cancellations at 2 weeks or less will not be refunded. No refunds will be given during Merrie Monarch Festival (one week before and after Easter Sunday). We accept Visa, Master Card, Diners Club, JCB Card and Discover Cards. Fold Out Mattress (futon) is available for $20 a night for adult or $10 for a child.
Volcano Arts Cottage is as charming at the description and photos say. Since the lush garden in which the cottage is located is closed to the public from around 4 p.m. until 9 or 10 the next morning, privacy is complete. The kitchenette has a stove top, microwave oven and under-the-counter refrigerator and there is a small propane barbecue (which we didn’t use) outside the front door. The cottage is “cozy;” as one review said, “it is comfortable for one person or an intimate pair.” Volcano is at about 3500 feet altitude and the weather in early March was cool and rainy, but the cottage’s propane heater quickly warmed the space and the electric mattress pad made the bed very welcoming. Ira was a gracious host and made us feel very welcome, including providing breakfast supplies of coffee, granola and milk for it, yogurt, fresh fruit, and a loaf of banana nut bread. We can recommend the cottage as a special place to stay when visiting the village of Volcano.
Ira was a great host, checking in when appropriate and giving us plenty of space to enjoy his beautiful grounds. His location is also an awesome launch point for all the volcano activities and some other local sites like the vineyard and coffee fields. We really appreciated getting his candid advice on which sites to see and which we can skip to move on to other things. After a long day of hiking the hot tub was exactly what we needed. Thanks a lot Ira!
Our stay felt personalised and our hosts were exceptional.
Upon our arrival (we arrived late), we were greeted with a note welcoming us to the cottage. We were also provided with fresh milk, fruit, banana bread and assorted goods for our stay/first morning's breakfast.
We found that the cottage was cosy and had a lot of character - you can tell that the owners had put a lot of time and effort into creating an ambiance not found in commercial properties.
We would recommend this place for couples seeking retreat away from the city and for couples wishing to experience the true essence of the Island of Hawaii.
My wife and I loved our stay at Ir's Cottage. It was a very peaceful setting with nice groudns to explore and a nice breakfast set up ready for our stay. We would definitely stay here again!
This was a beautiful cottage in a beautiful and convenient location. It was a great place to relax and unwind after a day (and night!) of exploring at Volcanoes National Park. We loved the treats left for us- especially the delicious banana bread! The neighboring cafe and gallery was also excellent with great service.
Loved Ira's cottage in an idyllic art garden on the side of a magnificent volcano. So happy we chose to stay here!
Aloha, I'm a full-time artist living in Hawaii for over 40 years. My inspiration comes from waking up to native birdsong in a rainforest on the mountaintop of Kilauea Volcano.
