About this listing
A traditional, 200 year old cottage with some modern comforts and many original features. Located on a quiet back road, the cottage is set in private land with a sweeping meadow at the front and many mature trees to all sides. It is about 6 minutes drive from the nearest town (Glenties) and suits those looking for complete tranquility. Good shops, pubs, places to eat in Glenties and nearby Ardara. Stunning mountain and coastal scenery in every direction.
Ideally located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and within easy reach of Sliabh Liag (Europe's highest sea cliffs), Lough Anna Cottage is available to let ideally for four people, though an additional bed can be provided to bring the number up to five. There is a B&B option for up to three people from September onwards. See 'Rates' below.
Situated 2km from Glenties, which is east of Ardara and north of Donegal town, this traditional stone-built cottage is about 200 years old. It is in good condition with reasonably spacious and comfortable rooms. It has one medium sized bedroom with a double bed and one bedroom with two bunk beds (and one occasional, additional bed), a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a working fireplace. There is the possibility of an additional bed which can be made up in the room with the bunk beds.
The cottage is fully furnished and the kitchen has a large and good quality gas/electric cooker, table, chairs etc. There is also a washing machine, but no television and no tumble dryer. Washing is generally dried on the line outside or on an inside dryer rack in bad weather. Both wood and turf are supplied for use in the living room fire place. The house also has a good oil-fired central heating system. All household linen and cleaning is included in the price. It is set in about an acre and a half of woodland and meadows with its own private drive and parking space. There is one friendly cat, who lives both inside and out. If people prefer, it is possible to rent the house without the cat.
Single night occupancy of the entire cottage is possible but a higher rate is charged: €100.
A B&B option is available for up to three people from the beginning of September : €35 for a single person, €60 for two, €85 for three. An evening meal can be provided on arrival by request - €12 -€15 per person.
Guests have access to all areas of the house and garden.
Interaction with guests
I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.
Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.
Other things to note
Please read the house description - all the way through - and make sure that this is what you are looking for. I recently had a review which said that the house was too isolated and so would insist that it is your responsibility to inform yourself and ask me as many questions as you like, before booking. I have made everything as clear as possible.
Smokers welcome as long as they refrain from smoking indoors. House should be left reasonably clean and tidy.
Please be aware that there is one resident cats.
