From your bed or the sofa you can look out on the covered deck to see birds and squirrels as well as the blackberry vineyard.Turn up the lights if you would like. Or, establish whatever mood you want because most of the lights are on dimmers.

The Blackberry Cottage exudes warmth and comfort in a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom package that can comfortably sleep up to 4. Stay inside or venture out onto the covered deck to cook up some steaks on the gas grill or just sip your favorite beverage. You're within 10 to 15 minutes of the Magnolia Silos and Baylor or, you are less than two minutes from Waco's number-one-rated eatery, Cafe Homestead. So, whether you are looking for a ricochet point or a place to dig in and rest, you'll find it here.

The space

THE HOUSE
The Blackberry Cottage is well named. It overlooks a working blackberry vineyard whose fruit is used for jams and jellies at the nearby Homestead Heritage. We built this cottage for "Cozy." It has warm tones and most of the lights are on dimmers so you can create the atmosphere you want. There's a wonderful kingsize bed and the sofa makes down into a queen bed. Even the sofa's mattress is way better than the typical sofa mattress.

HEATING AND COOLING
...all handled with a quiet central mini-split A/C and heat pump that you control. It can get pretty hot here in the summer but your cottage is foam insulated and the air conditioner is sized to overcome whatever is going on outside. Unobtrusive comfort is what we're after. Hope you like it.

THE DECK
The Blackberry Cottage has a large deck that looks out over the blackberry vineyard and our chickens. The propane grill is great for cooking out and there is a table and chairs for four. It seems there is always something going on on the deck--humming birds, squirrels, painted buntings, chickadees, cardinals--depending on when you come. We'll put a "Birds of Texas" book in the cottage so you can identify everything if you're interested.

THE KITCHEN
More than just a "kitchenette," you have a small gas stove and oven to cook your masterpiece, double sink and microwave. So, if you're the cooking type, you're good to go--from turkeys or roasts to birthday cakes!

THE BATHROOM
Behind the barn door is a huge shower that's powered by a water heater that never runs out of hot water. So, if a long shower is your way of pampering yourself, this is your dream-space. We hope you'll love the antique lavatory and the copper vessel sink. Look inside. If you forgot your toothbrush, we have a replacement for you.

THE VIEW
Whether you are sitting on the sofa or lying on the bed, you can open (or raise) the blinds to look out on the ever-present wildlife on the deck or look past that to the fading sun. Or, close the blinds and enjoy seclusion.

THINGS TO DO/SEE
Most of our guest come for Magnolia or Baylor. But, because you are so close to Homestead Heritage, most guests "discover" a place they love but didn't know was here. If you go to Homestead Heritage to eat, be sure to allow time to walk around their craft shops. You can watch craftsmen make baskets, throw pottery, forge architectural pieces, make heirloom furniture with hand tools or make a dress from cotton they have planted, raised, carded, spun and woven (seriously!). My favorite shop is their newest, the Basket Shop. You can find beautiful baskets made from pine needles harvested locally (semi-locally?) and, if you want to learn how they do it, they'll teach you.

Guest access

YOUR SPACE
Doug and Donna, live on the same property in a completely separate house. Otherwise check out the blackberry vineyard, the chicken tractors, whatever. Our land has another vacation rental (the Forest Cottage) but you are visually isolated from each other.

Interaction with guests

OUR INTERACTION WITH YOU
We'd love to meet you but we will absolutely respect your privacy. That being said, please don't avoid us. We love meeting you and getting to know you better. It's one of the reasons we built the Blackberry Cottage.

Other things to note

If you need more space, we have the Forest Cottage that will sleep another 2 adults. Close but isolated. To find the Forest Cottage, just click on the Host area (or click on my face).

I can't say enough good things about this property! It's beautiful and clean and peaceful! Everything went so smooth and we were ecstatic about how wonderful the place was. Each morning my husband and I drank coffee on the porch and watch the hummingbirds- it was so relaxing! I loved the special touches- delicious pastries, fresh flowers and handmade soap! This place is top of the line! We will definitely be back!

This place is definitely worth the money and so much more. The owners are obviously very caring and sweet people. Lots of personal touches on our stay that were much appreciated.

Absolutely wonderful cottage! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Our visit began with excellent communication and instruction by Doug on how to get to his property as we got in well past midnight after our flight got in to dallas pretty late. Once at the cottage, we were greeted by welcome cards and snacks which were right on point. The cabin is exactly like the pictures. We loved the attentiveness to details of everything in the cottage. The bed is huge! The next morning we had the pleasure of meeting Doug and his wife which was a perfect way to begin our tour of waco. Thank you very much for hosting us! Would definately come back!

Our family has had the opportunity to travel extensively over the past four years and have had our fair share of stays at a variety of accommodations. Needless to say, Blackberry Cottage ranks at the very top of our list for everything from comfort to friendliness. In the words of my seven year old daughter, this is the BEST place we have ever stayed. After a long, emotional and exhausting day of moving my oldest daughter to Baylor University, we arrived at the cottage hungry and ready to relax. We were so fatigued that we didn't even take the time to stop for a a bite to eat. But that was no problem. Waiting for us in the well appointed, cozy kitchen were turkey and cheese croissants, popcorn, cookies, drinks and so much more. What an unexpected treat. We felt like we were staying with family. Doug and his wife leave nothing to chance. The cottage is not only filled with warmth, but anything you might need for a comfortable stay. We realized that my daughter had forgotten her toothbrush, which wasn't a problem, because in the top drawer of the bathroom vanity, there was not only a toothbrush, but just about any personal care item you might have forgotten on your trip. The cottage is clean, beautifully decorated, and filled with so much charm, that the only problem I can see is that you might not want to leave. Doug and Donna couldn't have been friendlier, exuding the same warmth as the cottage, making us feel at home. We had a wonderful nights sleep and would certainly come back for another, longer stay in the future. I would absolutely recommend the Blackberry Cottage to anyone looking to not only have a place to stay, but to be well taken care of in the process.

You will love this amazing cottage! It has all the furnishings you need and then some! It was a beautiful cottage both inside and outside. Besides the basics we needed we were treated to some extra personal touches that made our trip that much better!

If being off on your own in a mostly private environment in a nicely appointed "cabin/cottage' with all the extras is your thing then stay here. So much more enjoyable than a hotel with great snacks, full kitchen and a comfy large bed to slumber in. Wonderful touches throughout and as one who knows a bit about renovation/construction/remodeling they did a very fine job!

This is FANTASTIC home to stay in! The hosts go above and beyond anywhere else I have stayed and the property is extremely private. Almost like staying in the mountains! EXTREMELY CLEAN

Response from Doug:
You were a delight and the first guests to use the word "phenomenal" in our Guest Book. (I've never known anyone who could spell it!)

Donna and I have been happily married for over 45 years and it seems like it just keeps getting better and better. She's a homemaker and my day job is as a web designer. We have three grown kids that all live within a couple of miles.

We've just started in the vacation rental business and it keeps both of us hoping to get more landscaping done now that we've finished the cottages. It's a supplement to our retirement but the real pay from owning these vacation rentals is reading your comments and feedback in the Guestbook. The guests we have had have all been absolutely wonderful.

We had another company managing the property until recently but decided to take it back because we felt distanced from everything except washing sheets and towels. So, as mentioned elsewhere, we will protect your privacy but we want to at least meet you--even if it is just to say, "You're Welcome Here."
