A roadside attraction without the distraction. A car goes by, a bicyclist or walker passes, swallows dip and dart. This circa 1890s former blacksmith shop is twenty feet to the peaceful Pacific Coast Highway, and a quick walk to a secluded beach.
Westport boomed in 1878 and was the largest town north of San Francisco, but truth be told, not much happens here any more.
Open and airy and cozy and happy, packed with strange and varied art work. Enjoy cooking and napping, reading or staring, and the endless changing Pacific off the deck. Writers, escapists, and creative types will appreciate the solitude of the detached artist studio.
One bedroom is cozy and dark, the other bright, with a view to the ocean and a loaded bookshelf. The kitchen has a 5-burner gas stovetop, large convection oven, and coffee maker. The living area has a long table for a gourmet spread or a project. Bath with shower, washer and dryer, and the Lost Coast's largest collection of those plaster fish. Watch a DVD or listen to music. Play a game. Be inspired. Or just sit on the porch in comfortable adarondack chairs or in the hot tub.
Outside you will find a 100 square foot artist studio with another large deck. There is a writing desk inside, chaise lounge and a stereo system for ipod/computer hookup with two indoor speakers. Great space to do some morning yoga or painting. You will also find a charcoal grill outside.
There sandy beaches just a block away and down the bluffs to stairs. All the nearby beaches are dog friendly too and pets are welcome in my home.
Buy local! The Westport General store sells beer and staples and makes great organic sandwiches and pizzas to order. The Westport Hotel and Old Abalone Pub serves dinners on the weekends.
Off high-way parking for two cars. Note that the side yard is a sculpture construction site for The Westport Whale, a future roadside attraction.
This place has all the basic amenties without the frills. The house is definitely a work in progress. It is my Dream and my favorite place to be in the whole world. I hope you will enjoy it too.
The Whale house was one of the most unique, fun, and inspiring places that any of our group of four had ever stayed at! The artwork and quirky touches entertained and stimulated us from the minute we walked in the door through the end of the weekend. The hot tub was a perfect touch and this is the type of place you've got to see to see in person to fully appreciate. It was a trip we'll never forget!
Kyle's house was clean, fun, quirky, quiet, relaxing, inspirational, and just downright enjoyable! The town of Westport was quiet and lovely, just a shade removed from the beaten path between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We explored a few new beaches, had a bon fire, enjoyed the hot tub, drank great wine, and had a wonderful time with our friends and with our dog. The house is very dog friendly and has a good fence, as well as a dog-friendly beach 5 minutes away on foot. We will definitely return! Thank you, Kyle for the lovely welcome gifts. We will be enjoying those soon. - Katie Sheehan
The Westport Whale was everything the listing mentioned and so much more! Kyle is a very thoughtful host and every detail was just perfect! On top of being the most responsive host, he also left tons of extra goodies (candy and beer) and even tips for things to do in the area (whale watching). My friends and I absolutely LOVED all of the art; there was no shortage of things to look at! We'll definitely be back!
Kyle's oceanside house was full of charm and humor. We loved all the art on the walls and the feeling of creative collaboration. Views of the pacific are expansive and especially appreciated from the hot tub on the back porch. Excellent coffee, beer and chocolate, courtesy of Kyle, too. What more do you want?
This was our second time in Kyle's home and it was a magical experience yet again. I've never felt so at home in a place that isn't my own. From the Bay Area, we visited Boonville to enjoy some local brews and then to Fort Bragg to buy our groceries at the lovely Harvest Market to pick up some amazing local fish and produce. Extremely well stocked and thought out kitchen. Books galore (no need to bring any). Stunning views, clean and fully functioning hot tub and bbq, and lots of great walks to nearby quiet beaches. We never got tired of looking at the artwork and kept seeing new things that inspired lots of laughter and conversation. We will never look at whales the same way! A few little things to note: poor wifi and no phone service (but this was actually a blessing for us), and the shower stall was a little short and cramped for my tall man. All that said, we are planning to return again soon for a longer stay and can't wait!
everything was great. amazing views from the house, fully stocked with everything we needed (and more). Kyle was super helpful and hospitable throughout (even though we never saw him!)
I find it hard to know where to begin this review, as the experience was fantastic and unique in every facet of the stay. The location is simply beautiful! The stunning views of the Pacific Ocean out the kitchen, bedroom, and from the deck kept us memorized for hours. Westport itself is a charming community, and the general store has a wide range of items, as well as great fresh pizza. Kyle had everything set for us when we arrived, including a great bottle of wine and some local chocolate. The house itself is so cosy, we wished we would have had more time to spend there. The art work both inside and outside of the home inspires and lifts the soul, while also providing interesting insights into everyday life experiences. We were excited to be part of Kyle's ongoing art project. We didn't watch any TV while we were there, and you really don't need to as there is plenty to see inside and outside the home. Being able to use the Ipod with Kyle's reciever to tune in a local radio station was a great extra. There was even a laptop left just in case we had trouble getting the WiFi signal. Everyday we found new art objects that caused us to smile. The bed in the back bedroom was very comfortable, with nice bedding. The kitchen was well supplied with necessary pots, pans, etc. The hot tub on the deck is a great bonus, and we spent lots of time there watching for whales during the day, or watching the thousands of stars at night. We managed to get to two of the beaches Kyle recommended, and saw sea lions (or seals) at each beach. The only downside of the stay was that we didn't get to spend enought time there. If and when we get back to Westport, we would love to spend a longer stretch of time at the Artist's Ocean Retreat.
