Petrea Castle belongs to the castle's complex Troupaki-Mourtzinou of Upper Kardamili in Messinian Mani. Built in the early 18th century, recently restored on plans by Greek Ministry of Culture, preserving with respect its historic and architectural character. Originator of the family was Michael Palaiologos, who lived in the area at the end of the 17th century and his descendant was the chieftain Panagiotis Troupakis-Mourtzinos, a member of the Filiki Etaireia and one of the most important fighters of Greek independence. This was the place where Theodoros Kolokotronis hosted the preparation of the Greek Revolution where, with the help of Mourtzinos and his Maniates warriors, he liberated the city of Kalamata on 23rd March and gave the first victorious battle at Karytaina.

The stone built settlement is located in Upper Kardamili and incorporates the tower houses of the Troupaki-Mourtzinou, Petrea, Bahleba and Boukouvala families. Inside the complex is the family church of Agios Spyridonas, with the impressive bell tower and the family's graves.
